American Idol 7 Hollywood Week - Videos

by Jeanne on February 12th, 2008

Tonight was the first Hollywood Week episode.  What did you think?!?!?!  Details, people - details!!!

I’ll tell you, I am just loving David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado, Amanda Overmyer and Danny Noriega.  I like some others too but those just stand out in my mind as I type.

Here are some videos:

Brooke White chose to use a keyboard as an accompaniment during the next round of auditions.

She sang “Beautiful” and the judges all liked her.  I did too but I was not as enthralled with this performance as I was with her first one.  I don’t know what it was.

More after the jump!

Amy Flynn brought her vocal coach.  The coach had auditioned for American Idol in season 4 and, obviously, didn’t make it to the top 12.  That, along with the fact that she advised this girl to learn a song the night before “singing for her life” did not impress me.

Forgotten Lyrics - boy, some of these are just painful to watch!

David Cook sang “Everything I Do” and I thought it was good.  I didn’t leap from my seat but it was good.  It reminded me of someone else but I can’t figure it out!

Simon Cowell did not seem to like the instruments (he was right about some of them)

Jake Mellama decided it would be a good idea to audition playing the drums.  I’m sorry but I thought that was really dumb.  The point is to focus on the singing and you can’t get more disruptive than the drums!

Kyle Ensley was accidentally sent to a room that was occupied by two girls.  Then Simon and Paula definitely disagreed about Kyle’s place in the competition:

Ghaleb Emachah thinks he’s sexier than he is (or is it just my imagination???).  I don’t think he would have been so bad if he had not played the guitar.  I think it distracted him from his singing.

I’m not sure how Bryan Adams would feel about all these different interpretations of his song but here’s a medley of “Everything I Do.”  I don’t want to hear this song for a long time and I’m Canadian, lol.

David Hernandez always surprises me.  He sang “Love the One You’re With” and it was good, good, good!!!

Josiah Leming played the keyboards as he sang “Grace Kelly” and it was great.  I like him so much but he does freak out a bit too easily.  I’ve got other concerns about Josiah but I’ll save it for tomorrow.

Amanda Overmyer… what do I even say about her???  Where does that voice come from?  I love her.  She’s not always vocally accurate but that’s part of the charm!

Here are the performances by Danny Noriega, Carly Smithson, Ramiele Malubay and Michael Johns.

Michael Lee Johns also sang “Bohemian Rhasody” and, to be honest, I was unhappy when he announced his song choice.  He really surprised me.  Good job.

Carly Smithson sang “Alone” and I knew she was a good singer but I didn’t know she had all that in her.  She is really good.

David Archuleta sang “Heaven” and, again, he proved just how talented he is.  Such a young guy but he has such amazing potential.

Kyle Ensley sang “You Raise Me Up” and got Simon Cowell to apologize for walking out on Kyle’s performance the day before.

Asia’h Epperson sang “I’m Going Down” (loved when Mary J. Blige sang this!).

Josiah Leming sang “Stand By Me” without the accompaniment of the band since his rehearsals had not gone well.  He lost my respect a little bit with some of his antics even though I continue to believe he is a great talent.

Syesha Mercado sang “Chain of Fools” after having a hard time with her voice the day before.  She stopped talking all together and it paid off - you could barely tell that she was fighting hoarseness.

Brooke Helvie sang “Unchained Melody” and it did not go well for her.  I think she has a decent voice but you can judge the rest of it for yourselves.

Kristy Lee Cook, Jeffrey Lampkin and Angela Martin all performed.  Here is the video:

    Good morning everyone!!!! :)

Brooke-I thought she did a great job but you could tell she was nervous.

Ghaleb- he needs to really apply for Latin Idol. I thought he was horrible, or as Simon would say-dreadful…guitar or not he is not strong enough for this competition.

David Hernandez-YOU GO BOY! I was really surprised….and to think he was so nervous…the judges were right, he looked very comfy up there…good for him.

Amanda Overmyer-Awesome, but I again have to agree with Simon, if all her songs sound like that, she won’t win…good job though.

Asia’h Epperson-good job girl! She has the drive and determination, she did very well and I’m so happy she didn’t murder Mary J’s song like most do when they come out and try to sing a big song from someone like Mary or Mariah or Whitney Houston….good job!

Syesha Mercado!!!!!—I told you! A pro! That girl has talent and skill. She was a true professional up there in how she handle her voice issues! GO SYESHA!!! BRING IT HOME FOR MIAMI! (Lord knows we need it after a horrible football and basketball season LOL)

    :)

    Good Morning…

I thoroughly enjoyed American Idol last night. I agree with A”kyra’s comments. I was so happy when Syesha came through with her last song. She gave it all she had and it was well worth it. I hope she goes a long way. Some of the judges decision did surprise me and from the coming attractions for tonight, there will be a lot of surprises.

Amanda was awesome but again I have to agree with both Simon and A’kyra. She will definitely need to step it up if she wants to win or at least go far in the competition.

Honestly speaking, I’m not sure why or how Ghaleb made it to Hollywood week. I didn’t think he qualified at all! Last night justified that in more ways than one! Come on!

How about the 16 year old! Blew me away!! I hope he goes far in the competition.

There were many others that I enjoyed and will be hoping will make the final cut.

I will be looking forward to tonight’s episode. Just hope I won’t be disappointed with the judges decisions. They have made some errors in the past.

    Have a good day everyone!

Oh man I forgot about David Archuleta! For a young person, like Jordin Sparks, he is great! Watch out for the young ones! lol

I have to say that versatility is awesome in showing how you work under pressure. The problem comes in after the fact and they pigeonhole the winner or lesser thans into one box and don’t let them show that versatility. Odd.

Anyway, I hates the green mile and am not sure I can watch that; maybe I’ll just catch the results online afterwards.

All in all, they seem to have nice voices to enjoy for a few months. ’bout time, eh?

Whew, a watchable show FINALLY!!! Now, I have to skip tonight’s over acted farce.

I want to comment on the format of Hollywood week because it was so different than it had been in previous years.

Before, it was kind of like boot camp, they saw how everyone performed under extreme stress with new and exhausting challenges every day. People got one chance, just one, to impress the judges - In otherwards, it was like it would be when they are performing on Idol!

This show was nicer in that they got two shots at making it, plenty of rest for the better preformers, nothing but performing prepared songs. So nice for them. The first part was performing over a 2 day period, so no sitting around for 2 days, just one of 2. If they failed, they had to prepare for a 3rd day, the people who passed got to work on their final performance. So only the people who made it at the last minute would really be time challenged, unless it meant waiting a long time to work with the band and back ups. We don’t really know the behindthe scene machinations. Still, not quite as stressful.

So here we go, they have some talented singers, but can they keep up with the pace, do they have the hunger to “go for it”? Well, none of that could be predicted by the Hollywood week, so I think this is actually a step backwards in evaluating people. I am not big into the torture of contestants, but the show demands a lot of it’s participants, and will they produce?

I think this season, if they both make the top 24, Josiah and David Archuleta will create a Ben McKenzie/Matt Corby situation, where they’re both good-looking teenage boys who split the vote, leading to a shocker. I like them both, of course, and hope they do well.

I just wonder who it was that Randy insisted was a star during deliberations but who Simon didn’t like. Conversely, I wonder who it was that Simon was willing to stake his life on during deliberations.

Nick-I agree, I’m wondering the same thing!

Jean- It does seem like a better idea that they give them a 2nd chance. I think that some of the choices in past seasons would have been better if they had done the same thing.

    Lol. I agree, A’kyra.

That girl Asia’h is great. I really like her tone of voice and she’s cute and has a great personality.

David Archuleta is one of my “babies” of this season. Not only is he a great singer, but he seems humble and is still so young. I’d love to hear more from that boy. He’s got great range!

Amanda is great! I think she is really unique. And it’s rare where you find someone likeher who doesn’t seem completely fake. She’s got a good voice and she has some charm.

Brooke White is okay, for me. She’s definitely not one of my favorites but I think she brings a “nice-girl” vibe to the show. I just don’t know if she would make it on her singing talents alone.

Syesha is really impressive! It’s amazing how she can just come back from having her throat problems and still manage to blow the judges and audience away!

Galeb was ridiculous! He really annoyed me, and yes, Jeanne. He really thought he was hotter than he was ‘cuz I was not feelin’ him for one second!
