American Idol 7 Top 3 - Feels Like Old Times

by Jeanne on May 13th, 2008

American Idol Top 3 on TV Guide

I was on my couch last night thinking about this year’s Top 3 and something occurred to me - I wasn’t appalled by any of them!  I am very comfortable with American Idol’s trio this year (don’t you love this picture of them on the cover of TV GUIDE???) and it dawned on me that it’s been a while since I felt that way.  Sure, there have been Top 3’s that I haven’t minded but this year takes me back to good ol’ season 2 when the winner could have been Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken or Kimberley Locke

Like now, the boys got a lot of attention and the girl was more than talented.  The main difference, though, is that back then, there was a lot more hype around the show.  People were glued to their television sets and when Kimberley was sent home, not many were shocked even if they were a little sad.  If something similar were to happen, and Syesha is sent home I would face the same dilemma - which guy would I support.  With Ruben and Clay, I liked them both so much and for such different reasons - I couldn’t decide.  It’s how I feel now too.

I like Syesha and I think she deserves a spot in the final three (I also would have been happy with Carly Smithson).  Syesha has a great look, she’s got good stage presence and likes to take risks.  For me, though, her voice can border on annoying at certain registers and I think that, while it is important to take risks, it’s of equal importance to respect the boundaries of your voice.  I think she pushes it sometimes and it could lead to her demise.  She has a great personality and her hard-knocks life story makes you really root for her.  In all honesty, I think she might be better off not winning.

More after the jump!

David Cook came out of nowhere for me.  In fact, I pretty much hated him and I’m ashamed to admit that esthetics were part of it.  The thing was that he wasn’t as noticeable earlier on in the competition and when I did see him, I was distracted by that awful hair.  Well, he’s had a makeover since then in more ways than one.  A stylist has helped him, apparently, but more importantly, he started standing out through his great performances.  He has what it takes to make it immediately after Idol finishes.  He knows his voice well enough to know which arrangements will work for him and he takes risks, not by choosing songs that might be too hard for him but by picking or creating arrangements that are very different from the original.  I think he’s great and I would be happy for him if he won.

David Archuleta’s voice is sick (in a good way!).  He truly does have one of the best voices I’ve ever heard on this show.  He’s got control, emotion, tone and (usually) good song choices.  One thing that’s important to mention is his age which can work both for him and against him.  We’ve seen a lot of young stars grow up and go crazy so, naturally, I worry about that and, of course, about his dad ruining his career if ANY of those rumors are true.  Still, he really seems to be the total package - looks, talent, stage presence, etc… I would be happy if he won as well.

I’d love to hear what you think about our Top 3 this year.  Please don’t attack the contestants or each other (or me!) but tell me what you think about them at this stage in the game.

You know how I feel. :)

I think Syesha is talented but just doesn’t have enough of a fan base to take it all the way.

My opinion of David A is that he’s technically a good singer but I personally don’t care for his voice. I felt the same way about Fantasia, she could SING but her voice just wasn’t for me.

The reason I have been pulling for David Cook all along is because he can sing, I love his gritty voice, he connects well with the songs, he’s talented with his arrangements, and his stage presence is amazing. Having heard his original music as well, I know he’ll put out the kind of album I’d personally listen to, whereas the other two are singers that I would listen to on the radio but I wouldn’t pay to hear them.

    Nervous for tomorrow!

So I have been pulled for David Cook from the very beginning. I love his voice and after listening to some of his pre-Idol music, he is a fantastic songwriter. I think he has hit the music scene at just the right time and will make a great album. He has a great fan base that hits multuple age groups

For me, David A. is good but is a bit too inexperienced for me. I get bored when I listen to him. Idol needs to remain a talent competition, not a popularity contest.

I do love Syesha! She has a great voice and could go very far either in pop music or on Broadway.

It would have been a crime if it ended any other way than the 2 David”s. I thinh Cook will win. He has more maturity and stage presence.
