American Idol 7 Top 6 Performances – April 22, 2008
April 22, 2008 by Jeanne
I absolutely love Andrew Lloyd Webber and I’m thrilled that two of my favorite things are combined tonight! I can’t wait to see what the Top 6 contestants sing on American Idol tonight. Holy smokes – this night of Idol just got EVEN BETTER! David Duchovny is in the audience!!! I’m screaming! I love him sooooo much. Anyone else totally excited for the new X-Files movie (see production pics here!)? Okay, back to the show…
It’s Earth Day so remember to do your part to protect the environment.
Tonight’s first performer is Syesha Mercado and she chose “One Rock & Roll Too Many” and I cracked up when Webber said she could “bring the house down” with his accent – I love that man! Syesha was pretty incredible tonight even though my attention drifted a couple times. She really made great use of the stage which is important on a theme week like this. The judges all loved it and Simon even said it was “sexy.” I agree with them – this type of performance is really in her niche Maybe she will be the next big Broadway star!
More after the jump!
Jason Castro chose “Memories” and Webber made a joke about not ever thinking he’d ever see a man with dreadlocks singing this song – lol!!!! Jason seemed nervous and at first this was not working but he has moved up an octave and his little voice is cracking and I think he might have saved himself. Oh, the emotion. Randy said it was vocally like a trainwreck. Paula said that so many people are used to hearing the song sung by a female power singer but she likes that he sang it and showed his uniqueness. Simon said it felt like a very long two minutes where Jason looked like someone who was being forced to sing this song.
Brooke White is singing “You Must Love Me” and Webber wasn’t sure she understood the meaning behind the song so he educated her about Evita Peron and why he wrote this song. I think she has a similar enough voice to Madonna that this song choice makes sense. Brooke asked the band to restart the song. Randy thought it wasn’t great vocally but full of emotion. Paula said she “must stop and start” and Simon said that she thinks she will be very disappointed with that performance.
David Archuleta is singing “Think of Me” and I can’t believe it and it took Webber by surprise too!!! I love this song and I think this is fantastic!!! It was so good and original that I completely forgive him forgetting the lyrics. Randy said that it was the bomb and that he is the one to beat. Paula thinks it was absolutely perfect and that he turned it into a pop ballad. Simon said it was one of his weakest performances and that it was forgettable. NO WAY!
Carly Smithson had chosen “All I Ask of You” and Webber stopped her (thank goodness!) and she started singing “Jesus Christ, Superstar.” Much better choice if you ask me. She looks like she is having fun but I’m not loving the vocals very much. It’s a little cheesy and screechy to me. Randy said that it wasn’t her best performance but it was definitely good. He also liked her outfit. Paula thought it might have been too high of a range for her and Simon said that, aside from it getting a bit “shouty” in the middle, it was one of his favorite performances of the night.
David Cook chose “Music of the Night” and Webber said that it was one of the most sensual songs he has ever written. Getting David to practice by singing lustfully into Webber’s eyes was just cruel but hilarious. David started a little shaky but I think it turned out well. I didn’t realize his higher register could be so smooth and strong. Randy said that it was an amazing vocal performance. Paula said that this performance proved how well-rounded he is. Simon said that he made the most of the song he was given.

DAVID COOK! WOW! not only can that man sing rock but definately proved to us how well rounded he is. i could see him performing in broadway right now. if this eventually turns into a battle of the davids…david c. could easily sing in the same style of david a. and blow him away. he just proved it tonight. i think syesha, carly and david cook stole the show tonight. jason and brooke were train wrecks and david a. was his boring, predictable, not moving on stage, self.
DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!! DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!! DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!! DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!!!!
David Cook FTW! He was amazing and definitely nailed the sensual side of things. *fans self*
Broadway/LLyod Webber
not a bad choice since most of post AIs tend to head towards Broadway: From Fantasia, Diana DeGarmo to Sanjaya
Syesha Mercado: HOT!!! looks HOT in the Red Dress…HOT performance…all animated and all. Side Note, ladies, see what a great cutting for a dress can do…..no push up bra (the dress is backless) , but amazing cleavage!!!!!
Jason Castro: OK, too much side breathing, i think he needs to take some lessons on how the breathe when singing….Funny how the how time he was singing the song, i was imagining how Brooke White would sound sing the same song. FASHION NO NO, black songs with a white suit/shoes
Brooke White: Yeah, Brooke should have done Memories….in the middle of it…her voice was strained and sounds like she was singing, not good. ok, what was Paula smokin’ tonight….did all 3 judges gave her props a few weeks ago for staring over again. I agree that she was smart to re-start when she forgot the lyrics, i think if she didn’t mention it, no one would have known
David Archuleta: Can someone please go an adjust his tie for him, the crookedness is buggin’ me. I actually liked the way the song was arranged, and liked the performance, no sure why Simon said it was his weakest performance.
Carly Smithson: Didn’t like it, think the Simon T-shirt was tacky…no need for that!
David Cook: Oh, what happen to his “originality”? hmmmmmmmmmmm Don’t think he can actually sing, poor guy ran out of breath on the last note……
Favorite Performance: David Archuleta
Bottom 3: Jason Castro, Brooke White, Carly Smithson
Going Home: Brooke White
Till next week kids!
how can you criticize david cooks “originality” when david archuletta has taken NO, i mean ABSOLUTELY NONE, risks on his songs. they are all very disney, ballad songs. i would like to try to hear him sing rock (that makes me laugh because he would NEVER pull it off). he is too one-dimensional and boring. DC proved his vocal talents during andrew lloyd webber week. DA should be worried because DC proved he can step in DA’s arena and blow him away. sorry teenieboppers.
