American Idol 7 Top 7 - Carly Smithson

Carly Smithson said that Mariah is cute and Mariah said Carly has a really powerful voice and makes smart choices for her range. Carly sang “Without You” and I didn’t feel an emotional connection, I’m sorry. Randy said it got better in the middle but that the lower notes were not great. Paula said she liked that Carly showed vocal restraint at the beginning of the song. Simon said he really wanted to hear her sing this song but that it was only an “okay” version.

Yeah, this performance was not good. I love Carly and think she is interesting but she hasn’t really shown her stuff like she has the potential to.
I do, think, however that the judges are very hard on her. More than the other contestants (hello Kristy!) who get a free pass because the judges don’t expect much from them.
As Simon would say “I don’t mean to sound rude, but . . . sorry, I didn’t like it at all. My initial reaction - is she going to cover all of ATDW? No comparison, my dear.
I’m sticking with the Davids.
Her mistake was in hitting the glory note section too soon in the song. A glory note becomes annoying if it just goes on and on and on. The song just isn’t designed to get pumped up in volume and intensity that eary and held there by repeating the same thing over and over. Would have been better if she’d figured out a way to drop back down then build back up to a final power note or something like that… or even to end with a soulful, quiet ending. She’s gonna power voice herself right out the door… which will be unfortunate because when she keeps control she’s very, very good.
i think she has the perfect voice for “tonight is what it means to be young” by FIRE INC. its the last song in the movie STREETS OF FIRE.
I like Carly, she has a good voice, but she doesn’t really know how to put a song over. I feel nothing and she never should have picked “Without YOU”. I’ve heard Clay Aiken’s rendition and that spoiled it for me. This guy nails that song and every note.
I am so angry that she got in the bottom two. I loved her song!!! She did great with “Jesus Christ, Superstar”!!! I used to hate her but after that performance I think she is AWESOME! I am disappointed that she had a previous album. It seems like cheating.
