American Idol 7 Top 8 – Live Blogging
April 8, 2008 by Jeanne
Here we go! The Top 8 on this seventh season of American Idol will be performing in just a few minutes. It’s Idol Gives Back week so there won’t be an elimination this week but that just makes me more excited. Those double eliminations are brutal but I can’t look away, lol.
It’s inspirational week and Michael Johns is up first. He is singing “Dream On” and it was good. I didn’t particular love the higher notes towards the end but he is trying. Randy said it wasn’t the best and Michael mentioned that he was in America to follow his dreams (it was a bit of a Kristy Lee Cook moment, lol). Paula said he was unbelievable and that it fit him perfectly. Simon said it was a very good performance but he thought it was a little bit “wannabe-ish.”
More after the jump!
Syesha Mercado is singing “I Believe” by Idol winner, Fantasia, and it was okay for me but not more than that. Sorry. Randy didn’t feel like she connected with the song like Fantasia did (Syesha started to argue), Paula said she loved it and Simon said it was good but lacked Fantasia’s emotion.
Jason Castro is singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and I can’t explain it but I KNEW he was going to do that version! Randy said it was blazing hot and the hottest performance of the night. Paula said it was the perfect song. Simon said he thought it was fantastic.
Kristy Lee Cook is singing “Anyway” and, for me, the verses are a little out of tune but she improves during the chorus. Randy said there were a couple little pitch problems but it was pretty good. Paula (what is with her cleavage) said it was her best performance by far. Simon said that he thought she was very, very good.
David Cook is singing “Innocent” by my husband’s favorite band Our Lady Peace and it was okay. I mean, we are really critical because we really love that song. Randy did not like the performance very much, Paula said he is the whole package and Simon said he didn’t like it very much at all. He thought it was a teensy bit pompous.
Carly Smithson is singing “Show Must Go On” and there were some not too great spots but she really is a solid singer. Randy said it started out good and ended good but missed the mark. Paula said her voice was totally almost perfect but said she didn’t feel the connection. Simon said she looked good (which is nice after he insulted her last week) and he said she oversang it to the point of losing control of it. He thinks she chose the wrong song.
David Archuleta is singing “Angels” and it is really great!!! Randy said that it was his hottest moment the whole season! Paula said it was fantastic. Simon said it was the best song choice of the night. He said the performance was a bit nasally and the end was better than the beginning but that he was just nitpicking since David would say to the next round!
Brooke White is singing “You’ve Got a Friend” and it’s going okay, I guess. It’s a little pitchy and boring, if I can be brutally honest. Randy said it wasn’t her best performance but it was okay. Paula said it was a perfect way to close the season. Simon said it was like a pleasant walk in the park but was not original.

Actually, someone does go home this week. It’ll just be on Thursday instead of tomorrow night. I was wondering how they’d navigate the whole “nobody goes home” twist a second year in a row. I guess now we know.
YAY DAVID ARCHULETA! he did amazing of course:)
Sadly, this week inspired me – Insired me to give up on this year. Worst night so far from the “best group ever”.
Michael yelled at me – the song is not about yelling, it is about dreaming. Not good.
Syeesha committed tjhe mortal crime of singing another Idol’s coronation song. Does no one understand the rules of the show, she cannot win and must leave because she does not do homework. how she sounds is immaterial.
Justin was OK, I am not fond of the ukelale, for personal reasons, but was pretty much on key, but somewhat kareoke, as that song was reproduced note for note. Still being on key is good.
Krisy was at her best, but her best is not good enough, missed some notes.
I am not a conosuer of music, hence I did not know David C’s song, it sounded like a hot mess, he looked weird in a straight jacket (or was that from the “Monkees, hey, hey we’re the”
and who writes on their hand, except to cheat on tests in middle school?
Carly, hit some bad notes and let the Choir sing her glory note at the end. Did her voice fail her? maybe she shouldn’t scream some notes.
David A – well, his voice never appealed to me – the whole nasally thing reminded me of Chris Richards last year saying it was a style choice. I heard some bad notes, but I guess when you are David, it is not a bad thing. I thought the pieano playing was funny, I am sure he can play, but he was only playing a note here and there, I was watching his hands through part of it. Why bother?
Brooke was boring, nice song, snoozer. I have heard it done better by oh so many people.
