American Idol Gives Back Earns Emmy

by Jeanne on August 8th, 2007

idolgivesbackI know a lot of people criticized American Idol Gives Back and, in all honesty, people are never going to be completely happy with anything so I think this is a good thing:

The Academy is giving American Idol its very first Emmy — a special Governors Award — for “harnessing the power of television to educate and inform viewers.”

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said, “I’m really pleased that the Academy recognized the fact that this was more than a TV show.”

American Idol will pick up their 2007 Governors Award on September 8, during the non-televised creative arts portion of the Emmys. HBO will also receive a Governors Award for their 14-part series designed to help Americans understand addiction, aptly called The Addiction Project.

Besides receiving this special award, American Idol has been nominated for eight Emmys, the highest number of nominations in the reality TV category. In all, American Idol has been nominated 22 times, and hasn’t won a single Emmy. Will this be the year that American Idol’s losing streak ends? Or will they go home empty-handed once again? If so, at least they can go home and polish their “honorary” award.

The Primetime Emmys will air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 16 on FOX.
