It was absolutely amazing seeing the Idols perform Shout to the Lord. I’ve been singing that song year after year in chuch, and seeing them sing it was amazing and a true testament. Spreading God’s word little by little can make a difference more than we can even imagine.

have been a big Idol fan, but now, I think I will boycott the show. If I don’t, what kind of example am I setting for my children? Its not lukewarm, it is wolves in sheeps clothing trying to dilute, devalue,re-direct focus, blasphemy……….Oprah kind of religion. I don’t think some of the contestants even thought about this…….? Its a free country,I know, but “Christ followers” must listen to the Holy Spirit when these events occur and know that this is not Christ Jesus that is beng praised. Its “whatever” God you believe in. I am very disappointed, but not surprised. If I was a Idol contestant and professed myself as a “Christ follower”, believe that Jesus is God and he is the only way to salvation through repentment, commitment, and belief……….I could have never sang the song the way they did.

Kerry,
Did you notice they left out the name of Jesus? They said “My Shepherd, My Savior” instead of “My Jesus, My Savior”. They re-vamped the song as a praise to the generic “lord” rather than the one true Lord. It’s amazing what a politically correct world we live in.

I have not watched American Idol this season. The song they sang is not a “Christian” song siince they left out the name of Jesus. It is a “worldly” stage that they are singing on and it mirrors what so many of today’s churches are doing. When it is more important to be “politically correct” than to stand for the Truth, then false converts will be made. The way this song was sung, does not give glory to the One and only God. It is much like the way Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Robert Schuller and others have signed a pact with the Muslims trying to establish unity. In the pact it says that they both worship the All-Merciful One (that is terminology that Muslims use in referring to God). They have made Jesus equal to Muhammed as being a prophet of God. At no time do they say that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Don’t be fooled by a false religion and don’t be fooled by songs that “pretend” to be Christian. We must have some discernment as to what is true!

Have you all gone mad? This is beautiful! Praise God that there’s a light in the darkness of the world of television. You have to praise Him for even the small steps like this. You have no idea how He could use this to transform the lives of those singing this song. You’re acting like pharisees in my opinion.

I thought the song was awesome. But the whole ben Stiller thing, classless….absolutely classless. I bet imon was layghing all the way to the bank. I was glad to see the song used, but was dissapointed that it was changed to leave Jesus out. My sermon this Sunday is “Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid”……be careful filks…this is ok as long as you knowthe difference between the truth and the wiles of the Devil……a little bite here..a little bite there…

I agree with Heather. Even the smallest things are wonderful if they get any message, get any “Jesus publicity” as I like to call it. It was mildly dilluted and maybe some of the Idols didn’t really know what they were singing….but MAYBE it touched even one of them. The song is pretty transparent in Jesus being who the song is about. It bothers me so much that Christians are so quick lto put everything through their “filter”. I think it is is awesome that when you go on the net today, there is such a buzz about worship and God. And I was so glad that I could hear a song that my heart connected to last night and I could rejoice in that song and know that all over North America, others were joining in that praise. What an awesome thing.

I just about fell off the couch when I heard what they were singing. I’ve sang that song with our worship group at Church for years. I had chills. People will google that song and end up buying the original because of how more powerful it sounds. In life, we are either part of the problem or part of the solution.

All I know is that it brought tears to my eyes. That’s one of my all time favorite songs, and to see them all dressed in white singing “praise to the King” was incredible. As far as them taking out the name of Jesus, I’m sure it was for pc reasons, but still, we all worship the same God, even if some don’t realize who He really is. Some day when he comes again, they will all know this.

It’s not my filter, It’s God’s filter I try to live by.
Yes, just one “small” name was left out……..the most important….Jesus…….one word can change everything. “Lord there is none like you”…..”my Savior”……..
Sing a Jewish song, sing a Muslin song…..This is your right in our society….But don’t leave out the name of Jesus that is meant to be the core of this “Christ centered” song.

Well I hear what alot of you are saying that b/c they left out the name of Jesus. I am a christian and very proud of it I LOVE my Jesus with all of my heart. and frist off you know what yeah they did change the name of Jesus to Shephard but “HELLO” Jesus/God is the only God who is really referred to as Shephard. How often do you hear people calling Buhda there Shephard.
Secondly Shout To The Lord is in the top 25 songs sung in Chrisitan Churchs TODAY it has been in the top of the Chats for 8years since Darlene Zcheck wrote it. God is using that song in a very cool way. Thirdly you people who are saying that the idols were wrong for standing up there and singing that song if they say there Christians is retarted because it is what is in the hart maybe they were standing up there and singing with there whole hart to there Jesus. Forthly wouldn’t you rather have a secular show singing a Christian SONG. and Fithly what if that song braught someone closer to Jesus or let me think even led them to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Because they sang that song and maybe just maybe they heard that song once before and God touched them last night. GOD is a powerful God he can use everything for Good. and I believe that God can use there song that they sang to touch many lives. and i’m sorry but it’s Christians like you who slam the secular world and turn people away from christ. Instead you could be saying wow look what Idol did they stepped out and sang Christian song look what God can do with that look at the lives he can change!!!!!!

Any Christian who takes this production as something negative would also have to boycott Christian artists like Kent Henry and others who are purposely spreading the TRUTH without using God or Jesus to reach out to those who would otherwise turn away. This is America and to me American Idol represents all Americans, even those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. Some of the contestants may not believe in Jesus. If this were a Christian show I would expect more - but it’s not.
I was extremely impressed that this season the word Jesus has been heard many times, especially when Dolly was allowed to sing. For how many years was that woman judged by the Christian community for who she is, and now she is a representation of Christ. How dare any of us judge!!! The Word tells us to think positively, not negatively. It also tells us that there will be those who even “use” Jesus’ name to advance themselves and that is even considered “good”!
Great praise to our God Most High and our Lord Jesus Christ for showing up at this horrible time of our existence - bringing hope throughout the land!!

“But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.”
Philippians 1:17-19
I know they left Jesus’ name out, but He will still be glorified because many people today are googling that song who never would’ve done so.
We need to pray for whomever influenced AI to sing Shout to the LORD. They are either a Christian or on their way to the Truth. In either case God is reclaiming Hollywood and that person, or persons, need our support.

I think that the fact they sang “Shout to the Lord” was great. Yes, they exchanged the word “Jesus” for “Shepherd”. I’m okay with that and I’ll tell you why. Go to the Bible, the 23rd Psalm. “The Lord is my Shepherd…” Anyone reading the Bible knows that the Shepherd being spoken of is Jesus. I’m trusting that God will use this performance of Darlene Zschech’s song for His glory.

Sorry LoriB, we don’t all worship the same God, that’s what Oprah’s megamillion church is pushing. It was a tremendous song sung with the power of God on it I’ll agree. But if it were not for Jesus shedding his blood on the cross we would still be lost. Great song though….hope it changes lives—through the only way-Jesus..

Christ got free PR & publicity. There were people who don’t know Jesus all over the world who heard that song and got chills. They got them because we all have a “God shaped hole” in our hearts, we know the truth of God whether we will admit it or not. I think the fact that a song praising the Lord and directing people to truth was sung on Idol is a testimony to the power of God. Remember that the Holy Spirit uses opportunities just like that one to work on the hearts of people. Praise Him.

You’ve got to remember one thing, God doesn’t get offended like we do. He will always BE God whether we praise Him or not, He will always have dominion, whether we submit or not. Adopting an attitude that bashes individuals you do not know shows how much mercy, grace and love we, as Christian lack. Remember, if we don’t praise Him, the rocks will!

This was a really neat thing that happened last night. Do you have any idea how many people tuned in to hear this praise song to our Lord? Christians - we need to quit shooting ourselves in the foot. Imagine if they had ended the night with a secular inspirational song, some would be blogging all day saying, “I cannot believe that they didn’t end the night with a Christian song?” Well guess what, they ended the night beautifully, singing a praise song to the King, our Shepherd. (The Lord is our Shepherd.) When we complain when Hollywood attempts to do something really cool like this, I am sure the Holloywood powers to be just roll their eyes and say, “Well that is what we get for trying to reach out.” It leaves a bad taste in their mouth for ever attempting to “cross the line” and get close to what we all wish they would do more often.

If it was no big deal, why was “Jesus” intentionally omitted?
Who am I bashing?
I agree with Greg…..people will go to this site who do not have a relationship with Christ Jesus and say “hey…….that’s not how they sang it” and ask questions hopefully to a christian who can speak truth with love and explain it from biblical principals, not man.
But I believe there are copy rights issues that inhibited them from selling it in their version.
God sent “Jesus” to show who He is……believers………please……don’t be reeled in by polite deception

I would like to say thank you to each of the idol contestants for singing, “Shout to the Lord”. It was amazing. While you sang about God, you sang about the God who created this universe, a tower of strength, power and majesty, praise to the King. Jesus is the shepherd and he promises you life everlasting when you ask Jesus into your life. He will walk with you day to day. He loves you! What a great song, thank you! I got chills last night when I heard the idols singing “Shout to the Lord.” It is not only one of my favorite songs but to have the top idols this year singing it to millions and millions of people planting seeds just shows me what an awsome God we have. He is showing His face everywhere and over and over again on American Idol. God bless the person who introduced this song to the show and may they always have Gods blessings doing His work. For the people judging how the song was song…remember God is in charge and will allow His seeds to be planted it is now up to someone else to harvest….God knows what He is doing so why not just allow God to do what He is doing the way He knows is best. They could have sang a secular song but did not…so lets all praise God for what they did do and stop judging what was not done.
God Bless you all and American Idol for doing a great job.

I missed Idol last night, but a friend sent me the link for me to watch it because she was so awed that they sang this song last night. I watched it and got goosebumps to think of the millions and millions of non-Christians that saw that. And, as a few have mentioned in their blogs before me, to think that even one person who has been maybe going through life events or whatever where the Holy Spirit is gently drawing them to Jesus - this may have been the final event that brought them home to Jesus. Or maybe it’s that person who has a relationship with Christ, but who has let bitterness or anger eat their soul, maybe this song touched their heart and helped bring them back.
This is why we are here, folks. If we do not praise him, the rocks will indeed cry out as mamu said. We are here to reach the lost - not to be as the pharisees were and look down on someone else’s conversion and say it’s not a true conversion because they saw a song on Idol. We are here to show the grace, mercy and love of Jesus Christ to a world that needs Him. We are all undeserving of His grace and mercy, yet He came and sought us and loved us and drew us to Him. Jesus went into and ate dinner, socialized, with the tax collectors, prostitutes - the people who needed Him the most. We need to learn from those lessons of Christ - to give love, grace and mercy, forgiveness, gentle understanding to those who need Him because He indeed did that very same for us.
This song was awesome. Christians such as Christine need to stop patting themselves on the back and in so many words saying, “God, I am so thankful that I am not like these people on Idol,” and more like the sinner saying, “God be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.”
Christ was glorified in that song even if someone somewhere was politically correct in changing a word to another word which (ironically and probably unbeknownst to the person in charge of that change) merely changed it to another word that no other “god” except the true God is known by - the Great Shepherd. Allah, Buddha, Muhammed - none of them are called the Great Shepherd. Only the true one and only God - and He got the praise. Praise to Him.

To all those “christians” worried about them leaving out the name of “Jesus”, or that they made Jesus on the same level of Muhammed, or just thinking “oh my goodness, what have they done..”
Where is your faith or relationship with Jesus to think that anybody has the ability to put God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit in any other place than where they ARE. Good grief.
I think it is great that they chose this song. If it even remotely encourages somebody towards the Truth, that’s cool. Don’t worry about God…He can take care of Himself.

I used to sing with our worship team at church. I felt very blessed every time I got on stage. As my kids grew up, my wife needed more help from me at home. God showed me another way to serve him, coaching youth sports. I coach in the public school system and have had many opportunities to share my faith without wearing a shirt that labels me a Christian. God opens doors for us every day. It is up to us to walk through them. Jesus used miracles to make many believe. I believe he does miracles through us.

My last submission……..promise…….lol
Romans Chapter 8
Flesh….meaning world
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: 7 because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: 8 and they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10

I thought it was nice to see the idols sing a song like this one. Although they did leave out “Jesus” they still used God, “my shepard”, “my Saviour”…. all of these are in relation to the one we serve above. Take a look at the country that we live in right now. We are now leaving in days of Hell. To be honest I think it is great that a show like American Idol that has a lot of viewers does something like this. At least there are still people in the world today that still praise him. Also to those who are concerned about the word “Jesus” not being said in the song. What about the Christine saying that she didn’t think that some of the contestants didn’t think about this song. I thought that we weren’t suppose to judge. Anyways I think that this will touch may people and the contestants did a wonderful job singing it.

To everyone that is bashing American Idol for leaving out the name Jesus, please stop acting so “religious.” Praise the Lord they sang that song! I really don’t understand why any Christian would be upset that a song about our Savior was sung on a secular TV program. Yes they changed Jesus to Shepherd but how is this any different than Christians of the past who made symbols, such as the candy cane, to represent their belief in Christ when they were being silenced from speaking their beliefs. If restrictions were put on the American Idol singers keeping them from saying the name of Jesus, how can we not think it is wonderful that another name for Jesus was used instead? - My Shepherd!
I must admit I was shocked and saddened to read the negative comments written here regarding the American Idols singing “Shout to the Lord”. I, for one, was standing in front of my TV yelling hallelujah and singing right along, praising my Jesus!
How little must we think of God if we do not believe He can take this song, in the exact way it was sung last night, and touch people’s hearts. I know my God is big enough to use anything to His glory.
There are pastors across our nation who preach for their own glory, not for God’s glory, yet God still uses them to bring people to Christ. Not because He agrees with selfish preaching, but because He is mighty enough to use even the weakest venues to open a door to hearts of sinners. And He can jump through any door that is opened, no matter how small it may appear to you.
Our God is more mighty than you are giving Him credit for! And, He has one of his servants singing right there in American Idol - Jason Castro. I imagine God used Jason in some mighty powerful ways while the team was preparing this song.
It brings me joy to think that people all over America will have this tune stuck in their heads today. They may not know about what they are singing, but God can take that planted seed and bring it to fruition…..we are all only too small minded to see just how glorious He is!
Shout to the Lord, all the earth Let us sing.
Power and majesty, praise to the King.
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name
I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in YOU!

Swej-It’s not God’s plan that anyone should suffer. The Bible says He sees every tear and He cares deeply. Unfortunately we live in a fallen World. But thankfully God sent Jesus that we have a Redeemer. We have someone to put our faith and trust in. This world will someday pass away, but it is after this world that we can be in a beautiful place with Jesus, where there is no more suffering, no more tears, no more sadness. Cling to God, he careds so much for you and everyone that he sent Jesus to die in our place that we may have eternal life. Ask him into your heart. He desperately wants a relationship with all of us. I know your frustration, I can hardly watch the news for all of the sadness, but God cares — He loves us all.

It is an awesome song………..so sing it like its written……….whats the harm? Jesus is God…. and His Greatness and Name is “Jesus”.
So why leave it out is my question.
If I sang on a worship/praise team, and the pastor would say……..now we are going to omit Jesus out of every song…but that’s ok because everyone knows who we are talking about and it helps to “beat around the bush” and tell people about God in a “round about way” because that may bring people closer to God in a “round about way”………..I would be running for the hills.
Do you really think that it was American Idol’s goal to glorify Jesus last night? And if you say it doesn’t matter because its going to bring people closer to a relationship with Jesus…..Well how can folks know who you are talking about if you do not say His Name……..Jesus
I have peace in knowing that God give us discernment to know right from wrong. There is a deeper issue here………like (above) preachermac said…..little by little……..
What I can’t believe is that I am debating this with fellow believers…….isn’t this just what the Devil wants.

God is not indifferent to the pain of those who are suffering and dying. God is there with them during their times of suffering! He holds them during those difficult times and in His perfect timing, takes them home. The holy spirit gathers their tears and treasures each and everyone. Each person is special to God, He created them!! Suggested reading for you: “The Shack” by Eugene Young……it will give you an understanding of where God is during suffering!
It is us who are pushing God away……..and then we see things like we were shown last night and whine and complain because we don’t think God is there…when we have told Him we don’t want Him. We’ve taken Him out of our schools and out of the public view and we then have the NERVE to complain when everything in life isn’t perfect.
Well, everything in life isn’t perfect because our sin has seperated us from God. Our only bridge between that seperation is Jesus! If you notice, man lived in a perfect world before he sinned. If you want to be angry, be angry at Satan who tempted us. Be angry at ourselves for the sins we have all committed that have caused all of this ugliness in this world.
If you ever have the honor of going to one of the hometowns of those who are suffering, you will be amazed that they find joy much easier than those of us who have all that we need. Why do you think that is? It is because God sustains them. They are more willing to hear about and accept God’s love because they are in a humble place in their lives. And you know what, almost all of them will tell you, “Oh, it is Him who has been sustaining me all of this time!” They put their trust in Him and love deeper than any of us spoiled people can ever imagine!

Cheryl,
Thanks for the response!
But what I am frustrated with is the lack of responsibility we take as PEOPLE to right the ills of the world.
A trust in Jesus as the redeemer is misplaced (in my view) because WE ARE OUR OWN SAVIOURS.
Jesus just ain’t pulling his fair share!
We should put more faith in ourselves, to join together not in shared faith, but in our shared HUMANITY. We need to put more pressure on our governments to focus on the social problems of the world. If we don’t do it, God is just going to let people suffer and suffer and suffer…
Deferring responsibility to the afterlife is a cop-out. We have the power (and responsibility) to solve these problems now! With or without God.

How much did the computer cost that we are all using while a child dies because they don’t have a ten dollar net or two dollars for meds.
Who can tell a mother that she doesn’t hurt as much as anyone anywhere in the world when she has lost her child? Who is so smart that they can blame God while they have not done anything to make a difference? One child dies every 1/2 hour in Africa. How much time should we waste changing a flawed system? How many lives spent to glorify our opinions? You can spend or waste your whole life pointing and never doing.
Every knee shall bow, every toungue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord!
There is pain everywhere! Walk outside Starbucks right now and open your eyes and listen to what God is telling you.

Thank you American Idol for having the courage to perform a christian song on Idol Gives Back. In response to the negative comments that God is responsible for the suffering in the world. Numbers 23:19 says”God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Praise Jesus! Our Jesus is a gentle God, a true gentleman. We as people continue to push Him out of our homes, schools and government we remove ourselves out from under the umbrella of God’s protection. Jesus will never force himself on anyone but wants all to come to Him freely with open hearts. Thank you again American Idol and all the contestants for performing Shout to the Lord last night. I can only imagine that souls must have been touched by that song . I pray that all of you will come to know our Lord Jesus Christ on a deeper level. God Bless.

SWEJ,
Jesus is definitely our spiritual saviour. As for God being a physical saviour, yes, he can play some part in it. But only if we pray. And also yes, we can make a difference just relying on ourselves, but if you add prayer to that, it will just make an even better impact.
As for your post before that,
“Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks]…”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Amplified Bible

How could you not like what happened last night? I think as Christ followers we can’t put us up on a pedestal. I know they took Jesus out, but they called him Shepherd. 2 names which I use in my relationship with HIM. He was glorified whether AI people wanted that or not. That song can do nothing else, but point to the one true GOD! It didn’t point to Oprah’s god or the lord of hollywood, but to the ONE TRUE LORD!

Right. Put faith in yourselves because when your dead and gone you can still go to Jesus’ tomb and he won’t be there, but when we dig up your dead corpse you’ll be there, and in a very disfigured disgusting form.
Please believe in yourself and we’ll change the world. Is that really a possibility? Can you really look at yourself in the mirror and say “I can save the world today?” Cause if that were possible…….War? Poverty? Disease?
GET REAL!

Chris,
If prayer works for you, why doesn’t it work for those poor people suffering from malaria?
Does God love you more, or them more?
Or is he indifferent?

“Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:…What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.” Phil 1:15-18
Paul said he didn’t care why people were spreading the Word about Jesus, even if they were doing it for the wrong reason, he rejoiced because the Gospel was being spread.

Prayer works. It works for me because I have a relationship, not religion, but an actual relationship with GOD. He loves those people suffering from malaria. It’s not GOD who gave them the disease. It’s sin in the world that has allowed these things to happen. He doesn’t love me more than any of His creation. The fact is though that some of HIS creation have not chosen Him.
It’s about a relationship. What do you have to lose by following Christ? I don’t mean that in a well might as well do it attitude, but truly what do you have to lose? Pain, Suffering, guilt? When you follow Christ it’s not all happy times, but it is doing His will that I can count ALL things JOY!

I’m glad many of you guys jumped on your soap boxes after I pointed out they ignored the name of Jesus. Right, the name of Jesus isn’t important…?.. How many of the unsaved know that Jesus is called Shepherd? Did you know before you ever heard the gospel or walked into a church? Maybe you were raised in church – not everyone is. Legalistic? Pharisee? For one, the Pharisee’s would not recognize Jesus for who He was - something I have no problem doing. In Mark 3:22 they say that “He is possessed by Beelzebub”. Nice argument on the use of “legalistic” since it was Jesus who came to fulfill the law - “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” (Matthew 5:17). Ever read that? Legalism still wants to sacrifice the fatted calf. It has nothing to do with being unashamed of the name of Jesus.
Why would they not sing it as is? Tell me. Is it because Jesus is a rock of offense? Surely we can’t offend someone… that would be politically incorrect, wouldn’t it? Isaiah prophesied some 700 years before Christ as to Him being a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense (Is. 8:14). By whose name is it that the lost shall be saved (Acts 4:8-12)? Shepherd? You say everyone knows Shepherd means Jesus? I doubt that. Can the Holy Spirit take that song and minster in the format it was presented last night? Absolutely. But why are you so easy to sell out to the notion that it was “just” the word Jesus that was changed? If you knew that song you had no doubt that it was talking about Jesus. If you have been in a church service even a few times, you probably knew that Shepherd means Jesus. What about those who have never entered the doors of a church service?
I’m not concerned with whether or not the believer knows who the Shepherd is. If a person who claims to be a believer does not know the Shepherd then there are a whole set of other issues to deal with. So the sinner that has never heard the Word preached, hears that song last night and he feels convicted. Convicted by who? Does he know who? He wants to turn to “someone”, who does he turn to? God? Which one? Does he just get in the religious buffet line and pick one that suits his lifestyle or current truths? You know the one that says that there are no absolute truths. If it feels like truth to you then it must be, right? I’m a good guy, I never hurt anyone, I’ll get to Heaven, right? Will the virgins be there? I can earn my way in, right?
Jesus is the only savior? Try going to www(dot)turntoislam(dot)com and see if everyone thinks that. Here’s a little snippet for you “Allah said, “If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you.” If you are not ashamed, send this message…only if you believe. “Yes, I love Allah. Allah is my fountain of Life and My Savior.” Wow, I guess some people are not talking about Jesus when they say Savior, huh?
A little hear and a little there “It’s only the word Jesus they left out, everyone knows that Jesus is the only one referred to as Shepherd or Savior”. Wake up people!

Once again, the legalistic Christian monster rears its head! Of course, it would have been better if the name of Christ had been included in the live performance, but give me break guys! That was an incredible moment! People will be drawn to that song and they will hear and read the name of Christ in it. (unless of course, they can’t because of all the Pharisee’s cutting the song down). Don’t you find it interesting that most if not all of the negative comments about the performance are from believers? Shame on all of the nay-sayers out there who think that God isn’t powerful enough to touch hearts just because of a little lyric editing. He is infinitely bigger than that.

Christine,
I think the reason you are debating this with other Christians is because you are coming across as judgmental. You said you are only using God’s filter but you need to remember, when you are using God’s filter, it is only yourself you can use that filter on. Matthew 7:1 – “Judge not lest ye be judged.” God is telling us here He is responsible for the filtering of others! Who are we as sinners to say where the singers hearts were when they sang the song? Where is it said that someone must know Jesus to sing His praises? Sometimes, especially for someone who relates through music, it is that singing of praises that may bring him or her to Jesus.
You are relating last night’s performance as if it were sung in a church, it was not. It was sung on a TV show aired on a secular station who limits what can be said…such as the name of Jesus. I would much rather sing a song praising my Jesus in front of the secular world, even if it means I have to call my Jesus by one of the other special names I use for Him, than sing it in front of a bunch of people who already know the truth. I think you are debating this with fellow Christians because you would rather not have the song sung in a secular world at all if a different name for Jesus is used (or at least this is how it appears from your comments). Sometimes, as Christians trying to share Jesus, we have to scatter a bunch of little seeds and trust God to grow them. The negative response you are giving to the way the song was sung last night makes it appear that you expect to be able to just plop in the whole plant without first scattering seeds. Sometimes it is not possible to plop in the whole plant (sometimes you are given limitations which are out of your control). Does that mean you should remain stagnant and not try to help a plant grow? No, it means you may have to scatter seeds in a way that doesn’t make sense to you and trust the Lord to take control of the watering and growing.
I don’t think any of the Christians out here dispute the fact that it was a shame that the name of Jesus was changed during the performance. I do feel their dispute is only in judging those that sang it. We do not know their hearts or their intentions, only God knows that. I find hope in the fact that the song was recorded for sale with the name of Jesus in it. This tells me it wasn’t the singers with the issue, rather it was a source or restriction beyond their control.
Your sister in Christ,
Jennifer

I wonder if the Idols argued amongst themselves about using the word Shepard over Jesus and other debated terms we didn’t even hear. I think Shepard is a win. I think the fact they got to sing this great song is a huge win for Jesus, because typically, amongst all these famous celebrities, this song would be boycott. It really seemed like some of them were singing it right from their heart. It was awesome. Brought tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart. God is moving through this event.

We didn’t control our entrance in this world, and we can’t control our exit. But our Savior redeemed us through his suffering and human death………so we could live knowing that He loved us that much and that we could have eternal life with Him despite deserving nothing.
Yes, they took Jesus out……Chris…….when He is the Center. He should be on the pedestal. That song was meant to praise “Him” If we as “Christ Followers” cannot agree on this fundamental belief, how can we expect people that are searching to know the Truth?

Chris,
So let me get this straight…
God loves everyone equally, but ALLOWS some of his children to suffer and die horrible (and needless) deaths, because they don’t love him??
How spiteful and childish of God! Is this how the creator of the universe acts??? I don’t believe it.
For how then would you explain all the devoted believers who live and die horribly? How do you explain all the non-believers who live perfectly moral and peaceful lives?
The fact is, God is nowhere to be found…

Way to go American Idol. I know not everyone agrees with God, but His existance is evident in everything you do. Idol gives back is an example of the goodness and mercy of a God who would give people the financial means to make a difference in this world. SWEJ, I would like to challenge you to read a book called Evidence that demands a verdict by Josh Mcdowell.
He was an atheist trying to disprove Christianity for a college project.
If you are as analytical as you sound, perhaps it could answer many questions that you have.
If Heaven awaits those who believe, then why should we be so afraid of death.
I’m going to pray that you find the book or that it finds you. It is good that you challenge what is said. It will only give you deeper appreciation when you find what your heart is searching for.
God Bless You during your journey.

I never thought I would get into a deep theological discussion on an American Idol website, but I have read your letters and I just need to tell you that Jesus loves you.
Scenes we saw last night on TV are the result of a sinful world, not an uncaring God. I encourage you to read the life of Christ in His word, and listen less to us “Christians” fighting amongst ourselves.
When you saw those relief workers and celebs walking among those poor children, whether they would ever admit it or not, that was God acting through them.
God is not the cause of thier hopelessness, but in actuality, He is the only source of hope that any of us have.

Good afternoon…
I’m not an “idol” fan (that is to say that I’ve probably watched 5 full episodes in the show’s history, and none this season), but I couldn’t help but be caught up in the discussion and processing of what was evidently a pretty substantial event last night. So I’ve watched and listened to the replay several times today, and here is what I’m left with. Music is powerful. I find that I am touched by music (goose-bumps, tears, etc.) of all types. If God is the creator (I believe He is) and his creation reflects Him (I beleive it does) then it is not surprising to me to find such power and beauty in artistic expression coming from those created in God’s image. For me, the emotional response to music often has nothing to do with whether it is focused on Christ or not…I think God has designed music, in general, to be powerful and evoke such reactions in many people. I could care less what the “idol” folks sing or don’t sing. That’s not the issue to me. What I find myself struggling with is the idea of trying to make Jesus comfortable for everyone. Jesus is absolutely offensive. He always has been. Loving and following Christ is difficult and costly. It offends us because we like to do things our own way, and allowing anyone to be “Lord” of our lives is counter to our nature and our culture. The principle of removing Jesus from anything in an effort to not offend, I believe, is counterproductive to the advancement of His Kingdom (which he has called His followers to build). Jesus said of the Pharisees (the religeous folks of the day) “these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Saddly, I think that accurately describes what went on last night. I am not going to demand that people think like me or believe like me or feel like me. That is absolutely your personal freedom (afforded initially by God) and I want to love you and be your friend regardless. If I call Jesus my Lord, though (and I do), then I have no choice but to proclaim His name whether it makes people uncomfortable or not. God can use all things for good, and I’m glad that some felt compelled to worship Him last night.
Joy and Peace :-)

I am excited that this song was used on American Idol, what an awesome thing to hear. I believe that God will use it for His good, even if Jesus’ name is removed.
I think that something needs to be said when they remove the most important word in the whole song and change it with something that would be less confrontational.
We can’t expect the world to understand the things of the Spirit of God.
On the other hand, what does God want to show you in regard to this?
I believe that He wants His believers to see the time we are in. How close to the end we are.
“Christian” based American culture is drawing to a close, and soon our country will be just like all the others in the world.
I am excited, because the persecution will show who Jesus’ true followers are. Very shortly, christians will be arrested for stating the truth in the bible. Will you stand for Jesus when the world is against you?
My prayer is that I will be true to Jesus when my freedom is threatened, I hope that is your prayer as well.

PC or not - the stage version smacks of Universalism.
Shout to the Lord on American idol last night - deleted the Name of Jesus - thus making it another cool sounding song about any ‘god’ you wish to follow.
The failure to give Jesus His due props - doesn’t change the Truth of who He is and what He has done for all of humanity.

Yeah, American Idol!! In this very secular world any chance God has for a moment to be praised on public TV is awesome. I see the change in words as a way to get this christian song on TV. It is no different than the fish we place on our cars or the symbols we where on a shirt in a public school. This have given Jesus some much needed time on the air and on the web. I for one love that millions of people watched and are thinking about God today.

What if the original writer of the song hadn’t used Jesus’ name in it? (there ARE a lot of Christian songs I know that don’t specifically have his name in it, and yet are still very Christian)
The song still would have been powerful, and Christian, and they would’ve used it last night the same way it was written and we would all be happy and impressed right now.
We only see a difference because we’ve heard it a different way. But if it was the FIRST time you heard that song, you would’ve KNOWN it was a Christian song, you wouldn’t have thought “wait a minute, they should replace Shepard with Jesus”.

The fact is DEATH is caused from SIN! God is NOT sin! GOD is Just and merciful. God’s word is without SIN! I’m not going to change your mind with words. I do want you to know that I appreciate where you are coming from and I too have struggled with those very issues and what I’ve come to grips with is that I know that those children who were not of an age able to comprehend Him and choose Him are with Him now because of His mercy. Those of us who have chosen or rejected Him then the onus is on us for His judgment. There are many people who have lost loved ones who were believers. Why? I don’t know, but i do know that God’s ways are not my ways and God’s plans are not my plans.
Do I want a child with malaria to die or anyone for that matter? NO! However there are too many stories of lives changed because someone else lost their lives. Fair to me? nope! I though understand that God has a purpose.
I do want you to know that He does love you and me and He wants us both to work together.
To Christine I just want you to know that the song wasn’t put together by a church. It wasn’t meant to be worship and honestly when others look at it there is no other meaning than words on paper.
Idol used it to fit their purpose. They took Jesus out because it’s causing us to do what we are now. TALK ABOUT IDOL! I don’t like that Jesus was taken out of the song, but in the long run how many people’s thoughts might have changed because of the beautiful song?
I pray that God gets the glory

Psalm 100
A psalm. For giving thanks.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
I am reading that there are so many on this board that are complaining that Jesus’ name was left out but don’t you know that he is the great shephard? Stop bickering and start believing that God is already doing his handy work throught all of this…the words of the song, say, “Lord there is none like you.” “Mountains bow down, seas roar, nothing compares to the promise I have in you.”
Those are just some of the words to the song. There is no other God out there like our Lord God. Praise the Lord that this song was sung last night. Be happy about it and rejoice with the Lord in it.

It was very surprising to hear a Christian song played at a national secular show and especially the song Shout to the Lord. I really enjoyed it. But, I have only one question, why would the original songwriter/performer give the rights to use the song with the omisison of Jesus.

Lord, there is none like You;
All of my days, I want to praise,
The wonders of Your mighty love.
My comfort, my shelter, Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth
Let us sing power and majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar,
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You

Seeing this on TV really made me happy to know that they idols were allowed to sing a christian song on live television, especially the most popular show. The only thing that makes me sad is the fact that they left out Jesus.
If anyone sings this song without singing it to the one True God, who sent His Son to die for us all so that we may have salvation, the song is meaningless.
I am happy to have seen so many christians come out and say how important it is to praise Jesus! It is really reasurring in today’s world because not many people believe!
I really hope that this one step people can come to faith because ultimately that is why we are all here! Is to praise and honor God, spreading His one true Word!

Gary,
Thanks for the response!
I guess my concern is that God would let people (whom he supposedly loves) suffer terrible lives and deaths. And we PRAISE him for it on national TV??
Why not a song like “God, Why Don’t You Do Something?”
I think we’re afraid to call on God to act, because we know that he won’t.
Here in reality, it’s up to PEOPLE to make changes in the world, because God’s on vacation…
Janice

I don’t feel that God is on vacation, maybe we have been though. Nothing wrong in asking Him for a change in things, I don’t think it means we sit back and leave it all up to Him to make it work, it is our free will to do or not to do, so the consequences are up to us. At His time not our own….Why not an inspirational song, it can’t hurt.

What’s funny, no REALLY sad, is that even let’s say the idols sang the song “correctly” (according to some of the high, mighty, holy, and correct Christians who have posted here), they still would not be satisfied and then be real offended that non-christians are saying praises to the true one God Jesus Christ.
I am a believer too, and I was pleasantly surprised that they sang that song. As far as I am concerned, they stick to the true meaning and spirit of the song, which is a statement of submission, acknowledgement, and praise to the one true God. I’d take such statement being broadcasted on TV and watched by millions of people any day without one single complaint.

Hmmm…. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that song and celebrate whatever amount of Christian influences they may be in the entertainment scene. But was it just me or does anyone else think that they sang that song to get evangelical Christians participating in the charity drive?
I think the most Christian thing to do, is to participate in these causes, whether or not they close the show with a watered down version of a worship song. Feeding the poor, healing the sake, educating the young - these are in and of themselves worthy causes to Jesus. The closing song should not matter.

Well, tonight’s version of “Shout to the Lord” should have dispelled people’s questions about whether or not they were singing it to Jesus. They mentioned Jesus in the opening part. :) woo-hoo!

They sang Jesus the first time, but for some reason there is an edited version floating around…I just downloaded both the video and audio only versions from iTunes and the audio only version says Jesus while the video version starts with “My Shepherd”
Either way, you gotta love it because the song doesn’t work with any other name in the Universe! Listen to the words…who else could it be?

There are a number of things that are not allowed to be said on TV actually, and “Jesus” is one of them — that is, in a situation where it’s not being used in vain. That’s why they had to omit it on TV but could do it correctly on iTunes.

Why are (SOME) Christians the only ones to pronounce their God to be “the one true GOd?” Where does acceptance fit in? Nowhere? American Idol has just essentially said that every top performer, every audience member, and every viewer is Christian. Yes, they left out the name “Jesus” last night, but what other religion refers to their God as “shepard?” None! It is a CHRISTIAN song, no matter how you heard it. Open your ears. If you’re not going to come out of your box, at least stick one finger out to check the weather. Christianity may be the dominant religion in the US, but it is not by ANY means the ONLY religion. Are they going to perform a Buddhist chant next? Hindu? Jewish? Wiccan? I can’t even fit them all on one page, so American Idol WON’T have the time to sing one for every religion. And it’s funny to think, the Christian performers would object to singing about another God. But notie NONE of the non-Christian top performers refused to sing. Christians are so closed! It is not right to represent America as Christian alone. America is the land of the FREE. Included in that is the freedom of choose religion. Sure, if one contestant sings about Christ, and several have, that’s one contstant. Christians are as FREE to choose as anyone else SHOULD be, but AREN’T. Don’t imprison, bury, mask, sheild other religions by dominating with one. The Christian God may be YOUR “one true God,” but is NOT the “one true God” to everyone else. By the way, to all of you who are pronouncing me a Satanist at this very moment, surprise, I am a CHRISTIAN. But I do have an open mind, and I know that not everyone IS Christian. Everyone should have the same rights, and we cannot mask or cover up someone else’s religion in order to promote our own on TV.

Thank you American Idol for having that song as the opener for tonight’s (Thursday’s) show! AND THANK YOU AMERICAN IDOL FOR SINGING THE NAME OF JESUS as the song was meant and written! WE WILL KEEP WATCHING! At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow! And every tongue will confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

I Love American Idol - Last week Dolly Parton lifted up the name of Jesus - This week “Shout to the Lord” was great ! And tonight they mentioned the name ABOVE ALL NAMES - JESUS !
Wake up people ! Instead of fighting one another or calling Idol a secular show - take a stand for Jesus, stop fighting over doctrine.
The bible says the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord- there’s only one way to heaven - CONFESS JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOUR - If you believe, you will be in heaven - if you don’t, your not a friend of mine and you will be in hell upon your death - and by the way, few will find heaven The Narrow Gate
13 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell[f] is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.
- tough but thats the way it is …

a lot of the posts on here remind me all too well why I spent 4 years in Seminary then decided to leave the “religion” behind. It is truly telling about where the “church” is when some on this board are more fixated on the fact that a minor alteration was made to a song involved in a 2 1/2 hour show dedicated to trying to help the very people that are Biblically the responisbility of the church. Instead of getting all bent out of shape, why not ask how you can help and get involved to try and make the world a better place. 10,000 seat churches and sermons on how to get rich with God’s help might be in fashion, but the face of what the church is supposed to do came into your living room through your television last night…instead of figuring out what was wrong the show, why not figure out how to make right the situations it exposed us to. To those of you on this board who already understand this concept, thank you so much for your efforts, it’s the little guy working in the streets that truly reflect Christianity, not the $2000 suits and slick sales pitches….

To newyoung- It matters because not everyone shares your opinion. Reverse the situation, what would you feel if Buddhists were speaking for the whole world, and said their God is the one true God on American Idol? WHat if they told YOU that you were going to Hell if you don’t accept Buddha as your savior? You’d be saying the same things I am right now.

Who cares if they left out Jesus. We can have religion and religious songs without him. After all we are all spirit beings. Some may call their sheppard Jesus some may call him Buddha or Allah or Mother earth what matters is helping the poor and saving the planet

Budda didn’t die for my sin nature and raise from the dead. As Christians, We celebrate Christmas and Easter. Christmas- Jesus was born and Easter- Jesus rose again and ascended into heaven. If you are saved and filled with God’s Spirit, you know what I’m talking about …
Acts 2
1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
20The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:
21And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

James, I am happy that you are into your religion and it works for you. You need to repect the fact that there are many roads that lead to the Great Spirit. Jesus is just one of many. We can all be thankfull that Idol did not name a secific spirit guide and left it open for each of us to decide as we do what is most important, doing good deeds to merit our enlightenment

Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. NO MAN comes to the Father but by me.

So, did you see American Idol tonight? They sang Shout to the Lord again and this time, they sang, “My Jesus, My Savior, Lord there is none like you!”
God works in ways that we don’t know. Who knows why they didn’t say Jesus the first time, but I am just thrilled that the world got to hear the same song again and there were probably more people watching tonight!! Praise the Lord!!

I was sad they did not mention the name of Jesus on the show, but who are we kidding here, this is secular TV and who would have ever predicted that American Idol would ever in a million years sing that song, “Shepherd” or “Jesus”…and they used an existing, Orthodox name of Jesus as well, Shepherd….again, to everyone’s point, I wish the name of Jesus was used, but this song is a Kingdom song, no matter what….anyone ever blown away at how God somehow always sticks a foot into even something you might think the door was slammed shut on, wow…

I don’t understand, we replayed and replayed “Shout to the Lord” on the show and they did say Jesus. But I was shocked that it actually made it on the show! God will be praised, even if the “rocks” cry out

new age man - Just so you are not confused, your statements in themselves are a religion - a belief. In America we do have both the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion (two of our 1st amendment rights). Though I personally feel that you are not seeing the full path from your enlightenment from good deeds, I applaud your effort and seeking.
Jupiter - if it were reversed I would enjoy the music and respect their beliefs. Here in the USA we have this amazing freedom to express our views and religion. Note that, as I said above, we have freedom of speech, of religion, and of the press granted to us in the same amendment to our constitution. We as Christians should have the right to express our view that Jesus is “the way and the truth and the life” and that “no one comes to the Father except through” Him.(from John 14
