LOL.. My bad, I didn’t realize I was writing in caps. Sorry! I am not saying anything against the song at all, after all they added Jesus to the song tonight which is awesome!!!! But, why did they leave it out before? It was a very conscience decision on their part. So WHY did they do that and why did they feel the need to correct themselves tonight, which by the way, I repeat, was awesome!

  2. John says:

Jalba, are you serious? Do you see your own hypocracy? You just criticized people for adding things to scripture but you yourself did the same thing. There is no scripture that tells us to be Christ Like. Does Jesus ever say to be like him? I will answer that for you since you have a hard time reading. NO!!! Jesus says follow me as I follow the father. Following and being like are two totally different things. Jesus was speaking of Faith, we have to follow the father by faith we can’t see him. You a blasphemous if you ever think you could be like Christ as far as behaving like him. If you could behave like him then what in the world did we need him for? He took our place because we couldn’t do it. Now we don’t have to die on a cross to be saved we just simply believe. Jalba, please boycott telling others about Jesus until you have embraced him yourself. I say this in love. :-)

What a great song. I noticed on Idol that many Christian songs have been sung lately. God seems to get much glory from the show it seems. Plenty of Christian songs are written without the mention of the name “Jesus.” We hear them in church don’t we? to get technical, the way we even say Jesus isn’t even correct is it? Jesus is our sheppard and Jesus is our King. In a secular world, on a secular show, to see such Christ like behavior toward our fellow man and to see such worship to our Lord, Sheppard and King is simply amazing… Someone pinch me…

    David

  4. david says:

    Let God be glorified…

    David

  5. J Alba says:

Brother John. Wow! At least your trying. What is the definition of Christian: exhibiting a spirit proper to a follower of Jesus Christ; Christlike. I just paste and copied this from dictionary.com. Maybe you can rephrase your answer. I believe you have a good heart though, although there is a lot of anger and condescending attitude in your voice.

  6. Jeff says:

I am so not religious… i was a devout lutheran growing up and even taught sunday school… since then my beliwfs have changed and now i am 31 and dont believe in organized religion. BUT… i think the this song is one of the most beautiful songs written even if you dont believe… the melody and the words say it all… And i think the idols did this song so much justice.. Hopefully it will open the song to a wider audience. After all… the theme of the week was “songs of Inspiration”…Need i say more

  7. Tyler says:

Did anyone watch American idol tonight. did you notice that this time they put “Jesus” back in Shout to the Lord. im so glad that they did that. that way all the really strong conservative christens can still watch the show without being offended by not having Jesus in that song. Thank god that t.v. is finally going in a good direction.

    thank you Idol:)

  8. SWEJ says:

    So…

How EXACTLY would you all feel if the name “Mohammed” were used instead of Jesus?

    Really, BE HONEST!

    Do you see the problem?

  9. J Alba says:

You are right David. I just wanted to make a point that some things can get into dangerous territory if we are not careful, and maybe this wasn’t, especially after they came back the next day and put Jesus back into it. Praise God for that! After reading what you wrote you make a good point. We should just be careful that’s all. And on the point that Jesus isn’t correct, well that is how we say it and we know what it stands for and means. Theologians use the name Jesus, because it’s just the way we know it. Anyway, there really is no point to argue on such small matters like that. Like you said “Let God be glorified…”

  10. John says:

Hahahaha, Jalba, this is great, I hope people are paying attention to this. You now have diverted me from the bible to the dictionary, HILARIOUS. I guess I should have a little grace on you for your misinterpretation of condescending. You just don’t have a whole lot of discernment. I have no anger in me at this time what so ever. As a matter of fact I feel a complete joy. It is great when I get a chance to expose the flakes like yourself for who you really are. You may be the angry one for the fact that your hypocracy has been exposed and the lack of knowing what you are talking about. That is not ment to tear you down, but I guess I am like simon from AI, we just say it like it is and hold people accountable.

  11. TRACY says:

JESUS WILL ALWAYS GET THE GLORY, T.ALEXIS IS RIGHT, I WASNT TO HAPPY THEY OMITTED THE NAME OF JESUS, BUT WHAT THE DEVIL MEANT FOR HARM, GOD WILL TURN IT FOR GOOD. 12. steve says:

I don’t know show some of you were watching, but, on the show I watched tonight, they sang, “My Jesus, my Savior”. When did they sing, “shepherd”?

  13. Jake says:

First of all I am thrilled beyond belief that Shout to the Lord was sung tonight on AI. I am a drummer in my church worship band and we sang this song last Sunday. So it gave me a chance to worship without playing my drums.

Do you think that the kids that sang My Shepherd, My Savior” the first night might have changed it on their own to “My Jesus…” the second night. They are all seem to be fairly strong believers in Jesus

  14. John says:

Steve, I think it was on Wed. nights give back performance. I TIVO’d it but because it went longer than the aloted time my TIVO cut off so I didn’t see it either.

  15. SWEJ says:

I heard next week they’re singing “Mohammed ascended to heaven on a winged horse, and Jesus was just a man…”

All that to the tune of How Great Thou Art.

    Really!

  16. david says:

Funny isn’t it… I just realized that all the while we are discussing the name “Jesus” and how the name was omitted from the song, we have omitted the spirit of “Jesus” from this post.

The world last night joined together to do a kind act toward humanity. The light of the efforts shined brightly didn’t they. Isn’t a good deed a good deed regardless of a faith or non-faith that you possess?

The “give back” event stirred up good will and I am certain that God “is” glorified. Just as with the song sung to some 30 or so million people, God too is absolutely glorified. That song of praise likely reached more people on the other church than any other praise. What concerns me about this thread is imagine a God who is not pleased with the good will and the praise from last night audience combined… then… what hope do I have or you?

Please let God be glorified… David

  17. david says:

woops… “That song of praise likely reached more people on the other church than any other praise. ” … I meant earth

  18. John says:

Another thing you might want to think about, American Idol is the only top 10 weekly show on TV that is not owned or run by JEWS. But may be in a show of respect to all the stars that were on the Wed. AI show that were jews they decided to say Shepard. That was probably less offensive to the Jews, of course no good self respecting Jew would even know what that song was.
The song should be changed to shepard anyway. The name Jesus is just an english name Identifier. Your Messiahs name really wasn’t Jesus. It was Yeshua. There are alot of non Anglosaxon Orthodox Christians that think it is very disrespectful to use the name Jesus, just because that wasn’t his real name. I can see it now, you guys will probably pursecute the orthodox christians for thinking that but wouldn’t that be calling the kettle black Mrs. Pot?

  19. J says:

Idol Gives Back was a nice reminder that Jesus often works through people. The “Praying for Time” song written by George Michael, of all people, reminded us that we are not always faithful. A paraphrased story:*

1st pastor: “What is the first things you are going to ask God when you get to heaven?”

2nd pastor: “I’m going to ask him why he let so many people suffer.”

1st pastor: “I don’t think I would ask him that.”

2nd pastor: “Why not? Aren’t you curious?”

1st pastor: “Yes. But I’m afraid he would ask me the same question.”

  20. Matt says:

Download the version on Itunes. It says “My jesus, my savior”. And NOT TO Mention. the itunes version is hitting top charts. On another note, most people have heard this song before, i wonder how many people reflected tonight, merely because they heard a song they havent song since they have been a child. This was a beautiful testement to God

  21. aray says:

Well, I understand your concerns over the omission of the name of Jesus. I was initially disappointed since it is one of my favorite songs of worship. However, I realized that the decision to sing that song, along with the content of many of the songs recently sang on Idol (Including Dolly Parton day), show that Christ is still present. In fact, today’s version included the correct song version with Jesus in the appropriate lyric and the download is amazing!

  22. lore says:

Guess what…tonight on the results show the song was sung properly. The first line being “My Jesus, My Savior!

  23. sc says:

also, the version for sale on itunes (which is the one that really counts since it is disseminated) is the original version!

  24. Uma says:

I don’t see what the issue is with the omission of the name Jesus and how that in any way speaks of a generic god. Shepherd is a reference made to Jesus. he calls himself the good shepherd. The second verse “Lord there is none like you” implies a singular spiritual being, not a general reference that could be made to anyone. And the one through God idea is very Christian. And all the verses of the song making reference to God are names and references from the Bible. I think anyone who heard that song would understand that. what’s beautiful is that it wasn’t just a song talking about Christ. I was a song of worship to Christ on national television. I watched it in Singapore and I was so touched and encouraged by it.. Thanks American Idol.

  25. Christine says:

And the talk and Word continues to impact people on the internet…….how awesome is that!
ALL praise to our Lord Jesus Christ.

  26. Doug says:

I was initially going to post something similar to what Aray did about 5 posts before. This is the first time I’ve watched AI all the way through and have actually been surprised by the number of ’spiritual’ songs so far.

Anyway, it is interesting to note that others said that ‘Shout to the Lord’ was corrected for last night’s recap. This is speculation, but look at the following tidbits:

    1. If you follow Major League Soccer, David Beckham plays for a team operated by the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG).
    2. The agent for David Beckham is Simon Fuller and his ‘19?’ group. (The deal to bring him over was quite extensive).
    3. AEG is the operator of the Kodak Theater where AI has performed and will perform. AEG also happens to be the 2nd largest promoter of live music in the U.S. (see AEGLive)
    4. Philip Anschutz, although not directly involved with day-to-day operations, is a conservative Christian. (By the way, an Anschutz funded film group, Walden Media are the ones behind the recent Chronicles of Narnia, etc.)
    5. The Foundation For a Better Life (also Anschutz funded), had some ‘commercials’ during the broadcast.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting how things may interconnect.

  27. Ann says:

I was amazed that they sang that song. It’s one of my favorites and I think it was great. It was the number one song on itunes. I’d say that says it all. Praise God!

  28. Jeaneen says:

    Hi, SWEJ,
I have no idea if you’re still on this thread, but I would like to thank you for reading other people’s posts in a section where most people disagree with you. I think that’s hard to do–sometimes I just click it shut if everyone’s making me angry :) .

I thought your point about sending a few bucks and then buying ourselves a new outfit was thought-provoking–especially as I walked through our laundry room this morning and saw how many clothes just our family has.

This is how I think about God and evil in our world: just like when you have a teenager, you at some point have to make the choice to let them grow up and make some mistakes, God has given us the freedom to make choices–for good or evil. Much of the devastation in Africa has been caused by people’s bad choices (not their own, but others around them from colonization to now). So, it’s unfair to blame God for our bad choices–and, instead, we should help make things right.

What makes Christianity different from other religions (and secular humanism) is the belief that we will keep making mistakes–we’re not getting any better as a race (look at the 20th century…). Only Jesus offers a different choice–he did it for us. We can never be perfect, but he lived a perfect life and took our place.

I’d love to talk to you more about this and hear what you have to say, if you’re interested, but I don’t want to “preach” at you. Thanks for starting the dialogue!

  29. vinnie says:

As a believer, I had mixed emotions about the Wednesday version, omitting the Shepherd’s proper name. They took out the most important part of the song, and they were left with…still an awesome ,worshipful song. I was thrilled.

On Thursday, I wondered if they would show Shout to the Lord in the highlights from the previous day. When they reprised the song live, I was surprised and joyful. When I heard them use the Name above all names, Jesus, I was in tears.

For anyone still critical of AI “using” a Christian song, I implore you to read Philippians chapter 1 (verse 18, in particular). Rejoice!

  30. Gerry Toczek says:

I don’t want to sound like all of the previous posts before me but I agree that those who would oppose this song should read Phillipians 1:18. We as Christians all agree that there must be a change in our nation and the world. But change is hard and never comes all at once. Every move of social change has happened over time with small steps. Just look at the civil rights movement, our independence, the change in our nation since the removal of public prayer in our schools etc… Mandisa sang “shackles” by Mary Mary and is instantly voted off and now we are hearing songs like Shout to the Lord, This little light of mine, and Dolly Parton songs about Jesus all in one season! I would much rather be an optimist and a fool than a pessimist and right. I see this as a step in the right direction. If we boycott the show or raise a huge fuss what is that going to make us look like? We should applaud it and buy as many downloads as we can to show the world that Christians are not in the minority. One step at a time we can get Jesus back into the public square. And eventually get public corporate prayer back into schools, end abortion and see a lost and dying world come to a loving “SAVIOR”! Jesus we plead your blood over our sins and the sins of our nation God end abortion and bring revival to America!

  31. Greg says:

Take the fact into consideration that over half of the contestants are born again christians. Brooke, Syesha, Jason, and Kristy i know are all Christians. I also think David A is. As for the others I’m not sure. BUT just the fact that they are singing this song is a giant step foward. This is one of the most powerful Christian songs EVER!
Syesha even said that in an interview that she grew up singing this song in church and she was estatic to be able to sing it on idol.

  32. Brian says:

    Brooke is a mormon…

  33. david says:

This has been a great post. The song gave an opportunity for us to share with others. To comment and ask if a friend or co-worker saw the show and ask what they thought of it. Then, we have an opportunity too. What shall we say? I am going to say that I loved the show and how I was amazed to see the worship song I sing at church close out the show. How beautiful it was and how even non-Christians fell in love with the performances and how wonderful it is that the show united people to share with those in need. How helpful will it be to nit pick about whether one name used to describe “The Christ,” was omitted. It just occurred to me too, many Christian Songs leave out “Christ,” the Messiah.”
Also an opportunity exists to share how Jesus was inserted into the song if we so desire, and we can tell people that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God who died for our sins… and the conversation can go on from their. One could even mention how many songs on AI are geared toward praise to God and many are about God too. Well, I am off to do just what I suggested with a friend who I am sure will be amazed just as I am. Blessings and may God be glorified through this even even beyond our imaginations…David

  34. Michele says:

Are some of you out of your mind? Of course this song was about Jesus!!! watch it again. Praise GOD!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6G0U8Vg6nY

  35. SWEJ says:

    Jeaneen,
    Thanks for the response!
(I don’t find it difficult – just fascinating, since my own viewpoint is SOOO different!)

*** A question I posted earlier, which people seem to have AVOIDED is this:

How would you feel if they had used a Muslim song, and changed the word “Mohammed” to “prophet” so as to “not offend anyone”?

    Just think:
    “Shout to Allah,
all the earth, let us sing
    Power and Majesty,
    praise to the Prophet…”

    HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?

  36. Poesy says:

My mom and I were hi-fiving each other when we heard ‘Shout To The Lord’ being sung. We could hardly believe our ears. So many people got to hear this wonderful song. And they sang it two nights in a row! Praise the Lord!

And all the crazies need to chill out.

  37. Melisa says:

Heres a situation to think about :Maybe just Maybe cause we dont no what god thinks because hes ways are not ours….maybe some one watching last nights show will be driveing along in there car or out in about will hear that song again maybe a local christain station or other way, and they say “hey i know that song” and then in gods timeing they will hear the name of jesus…and trust me someway or another they will hear the name…..

  38. L says:

That is such a beautiful song. It’s really great to see this kind of discussion happening over American Idol. I love the show, and I was raised Catholic. You do not have to be perfect or judgemental to be a Christian. I was a bit confused by the omission in the song, but only because why go half way? And if I we’re not Christian, I probably would have felt left out by that song. But the wonderful thing is that the show was not afraid to take a stand for something. It was a risk. Just look at the movement they have spurred, and the interest in helping people. That would make God happy, no matter how you speak his name.

  39. Joanna says:

Christine, I think you are judging. Only God knows each person’s heart. What if one or more of the singers are Christians? God can use this in a mighty way and BE GLORIFIED by it. Let’s have that hope….GOD IS THE ONE IN CONTROL! We should be praying instead! Don’t you think? Remember something: Jesus died on the cross for those that hate Him! not only for those that love Him. Let’s be merciful and show the grace of God to others and become Prayer Warriors! Peace be with you my Sister!

  40. JLS says:

    SWEG-
I’m responding to several of your posts.
1- Does God “allow” Christians to die horrible deaths. I don’t know that he “allows” it, but yes it happens. Personally, as a Christian, I have realized that I would rather have a Christian (myself included) be the one to die that death than a nonbeliever. As a Christian we know we will be brought to Glory and live with our Father and the Son Jesus. What’s truly sad is when this happens to the unbelievers. God cannot “control” this world though. If he did we would all be puppets and what kind of gift would that be to us?

2- You asked what would we think if they changed the name to Allah, Muhammed, etc. Changing the name to “Shephard” is not the same as changing it to Muhammed. Totally different as Muhammed is never referred to as a God, only a prophet. Even to those who follow him.
Secondly, the word “Allah” is an arabic name for God. It does not mean a “muslim” god or anything like that. It is simply “God” in another language. It is our society who has taken the word “allah” and made it to be a “muslim” term.
Many other relgions pray to the same “God” that Christians do. However, they only recognize the Father part of the Trinity, and this is where they are wrong. They do not recognize Christ Jesus as part of God and his divinity. Many of them use the old Testament as well and believe the same way we do, up until the new testament.
I pray you take the advice of some others and read those books that will challenge you. I know had it not been for Jesus I would probably not be around. There’s no two ways about it. He changed my life. I had tried many times but only He could do it.

  41. Araceli says:

I WAS SO HAPPY TO HEAR THE SONG ONE MORE TIME ON NATIONAL TV AND MOST OF ALL WITH THE NAME OF JESUS -THAT WAS WONDERFUL.

BUT I AM SAD THAT MICHAEL IS OUT.

  42. Julie V says:

    SWEJ
I don’t really have an answer for your Mohammed Q, I don’t even know what religion he’s from, but the song wasn’t written about a Mohammed. So I thing that AI would get sued if they did, so it doesn’t really matter.

But I think if they sang a song that was about Mohammed it would be there choice because we do have freedom of religion in this country, (but remember Christian is the majority)

By the way, before you started this Mohammed stuff I left you a message, did you read it?

    And

J That was a great joke, funny, funny.

  43. Maureen says:

Hi…I really enjoy this conversation. I agree with people like Vinnie and Gerry and just thrilled how God is opening doors and showing His face everywhere. This also gives us an opportunity to talk to someone like SWEJ….there are so many people with his type of questions. Even if only one person these messages reach gives there life to Christ then God has done His work through American Idol.
What I am so so so disappointed in is the way Ryan kicked Michael of the set last night. I live in South Florida and the news turned from the Idol giving back to how rude Ryan was during a week of giving. The news said..”In a week of giving back and opening the show with Jesus you would have thought that Idol was in a giving mood but instead the contestent was booted off in the most unkind ungiving way in Idols history.” Then they showed a clip on how Ryan did this. I was so let down by Ryan (if Simon acted that way you would have more expected it) and the news changed from “Giving back” and “Jesus” to “the worst elimation ever.”
God Bless you all for all your coments and I pray God touches all your lives.

  44. Julie V says:

o and think Shepard (a name we use to represent Jesus) is a great example of AI gives back. think about it why do we call Him our Shepard?

  45. david says:

I forgot to mention that I watched this great praise song on youtube. I did so because although I was watching the show I was overloaded with the depressing yet hopeful message of the evenings giving. I promote bipolar awareness and hope through my book I wrote and talks I give. I am always overwhelmed by the one person in five with bipolar that commit suicide. I honestly do not understand God, his creation or why so much destruction is in it. I know the Bible and I know what it says about sin. As an author I know that I was the final say on all of the content of my book. Every last letter, word, sentence and well, you get it. God as the author and finisher of our faith, the world and so forth would also have such “editorial control.” One would think so anyway. In light of the condition of Gods creation and the devistation that was depicted our God was exhaulted, lifted up and praised. The question that we must be ready to answer I think is not the name “Jesus,” but rather why God allows such devistation in the world and why we should be compelled to worship Him. Some of you may not be able to read this without feeling contempt for my words…yet… I speak the truth in humility. “I do not understand why” which I believe is a good answer.

    Blessings of love… David

  46. Susie says:

I too felt like boycotting the show from now on, but instead I decided to watch it again to see what they would do and was delighted to find that they sang it again, but this time with “Jesus” back in it.

God is working in this, so we must trust in Him.

  47. trisha says:

Okay, I am seeing people are upset that AI left out Jesus in the song. I agree that it also was for pc reasons but am totally estatic that they sang this song. Almost EVERYBODY knows this is a Christian song so I am sure we had millions of people rejoicing in the God last night even though they had to change one word. To tell you the truth I didn’t even notice but KNEW who they were singing about. I was just so happy to hear it. Really great thing AI did there. Spread the word

  48. Amber says:

Get ready! This is a sign, we are on the brink of a huge, historical move of The Holy Spirit. God wants all of us to be equiped for the growth of the Kingdom. We are soon to experience a huge revival. Soon many will be believers!

  49. Rob says:

I’ve got a little bit of insight that may be helpful to the discussion here.

I’m guessing Hlllsong lawyers got involved somehow. Here’s why I suspect that.

A couple of years ago I was at a song writing workshop with Don Moen. Don Moen is the founder and head of Hosanna! Integrity music, and a writer of many many praise and worship songs. Don was talking about how important it is that song melodies be singable by a congregation. He mentioned “Shout to the Lord” as a song that, despite its success, is difficult to sing, mainly because of the second line (”My Savior”), which dips very low in the vocal register. Don wanted to record this song himself, but change that second line so the melody stayed a little bit higher. He knows Darlene Zschech personally, so he contacted her to make sure she was cool with it. She was not. He was a little surprised, but respected her wishes and didn’t change the melody.

So my guess is, AI used the song, and decided to “sanitize” it, without getting proper permission. If Darlene Zschech would balk over a slight melody change, doesn’t it stand to reason she might balk at the removal of the name of the one for whom she wrote the song?

I’m thinking that someone contacted AI and offered a deal: Have the song sung again, with all the normal royalties due, but put the lyrics back, and we’ll leave it at that.

That’s all I can figure. We were all shocked that the song was done once. That it was done again, with a key lyric conspicuously changed, either points to a brilliant AI marketing scheme, or to an artist holding on to their integrity. But I can’t understand AI changing the lyric between nights; it stands to reason that if they were afraid of the name “Jesus” offending someone Wednesday night, they’d be afraid Thursday night.

It just goes to show: You can sing about God or angels or spirits or Oprah and offend no one, but Jesus is a stone that makes men stumble and a rock that makes men fall.
