Australian Idol mega-star, Anthony Callea, has joined the cast of Wicked and he seems really excited about the role. He’s never acted before but he’s not letting that hold him back! “Working in a cast of this size with a massive crew is amazing because were all here for a common goal to put on a great show,” Callea said. “It’s a great, exciting feeling, but its also scary because its a new venture for me. Ive never acted or danced before and I can often have two left feet … I’m jumping right out of my comfort zone. ”
He definitely is – he’s gone from being a heartthrob on Idol to playing the munchkin, Boq, in the stage production. I must admit that I am not very familiar with the show, so I don’t know much about his part. Any fans out there?

The article is is great, but it’s not exactly his ‘theatre debut’ – last year he had a small role in the stage opera ‘Dead Man Walking’ and also starred as Mark in Rent.
This description of the role comes from Wikipedia….
In the musical, Boq is the love interest of Elphaba’s younger sister, Nessarose (who would later become The Wicked Witch of the East). However, the feeling is not mutual; Boq only became involved with Nessarose in hopes of impressing Galinda, whom he truly has his heart set on. Unfortunately for him, though, Galinda has so little regard for him that she cannot remember his name (calling him Bick). When Nessarose eventually becomes the governor of Munchkinland, she uses her power to enslave Boq as her personal servant. When Boq confesses his love for Glinda, Nessarose becomes extremely angry at him. At that point, she casts a spell on him from Elphaba’s spell book, but misspronounces it. This causes Boq’s heart to shrink until it is completely gone. In a desperate attempt to save Boq’s life, Elphaba turns Boq into the Tin Woodman.
Its a great production Jeanne, I’m surprised you hadn’t heard much about it as its been massive over in the States. He’s definately very excited about it and Taz has given you a good rundown of his role. This part will be much more of an acting role than a singing role, this time around. Will keep you posted about it.
