Asian Idol Winner Announced - Hady Mirza!
Asian Idol has crowned its’ first winner, Singapore Idol Hady Mirza!!!
In case you are confused (as I was), Asian Idol is a version of the singing competition featuring winners of Idol competitions from six Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam). Mirza has been given an international recording contract and a free trip around the world to watch international Idol shows.
The final performance and results shows were held on December 15 and 16, 2007 in Jakarta, Indonesia. American Idol winner, Taylor Hicks and Australian Idol winner, Guy Sebastian, made guest appearances (video below).
I have been receiving emails from readers telling me that they think a female contestant should have won. Forgive me but, since I can’t watch the show, I’m not too familiar with the contestant you’re talking about. If you’ve got video(s), send them to me!
In the meantime, here’s a video of Hady Mirza learning that he has won the competition:
Watch Taylor Hicks and Guy Sebastian’s performances after the jump!

The title should’ve been given to Jac or anyone else but Hady!Okay he’s got the talent otherwise he wouldn’t be on that stage in the first place, but comparatively,I think he’s the weakest contestant when voice quality is concerned.Perhaps he won because most voters from the other countries voted him as their second choice (thinking that he’s the most unlikely winner and wont be a threat to their first choice). And of course, in addition to that, all Sporeans and those girls who go for his looks would vote for him. The voting system should be changed. The juries themselves saw the contestants collectively as Asian idols..one Asian. So why should the vote be initially based on country? The vote should be name-based, to be fair and to reduce bias in judgment. Also, there shouldn’t be a second vote..I wish they could reveal who got the most first as well as second votes, then we’ll see how this kind of upset could have happened.

being an avid hady mirza fan, i was dissapointed on his first performance and really didnt thought hed win, coz the rest were such strong singers with powerful voices and singapore is the smallest population. so imagine the shock i had when he won the competition! i was really happy and in tears. his sincerity, humbility and his own style of singing-definitely- won the hearts of asian.

The voting wasn’t planned well, the best didn’t win.I expected singapore to win(if you didn’t expect, you’re to slow)because voters from India,Ind. and Phil. would choose singapore as their second choice bec. of low population, without thinking that they’re all wrong…the best were from Phil.,Ind. and Mal.but Ind. Idol’s performance was really bad when he sang with guy sebastian.it was all guy sebastian..Singapore’s idol can sing well but his voice is very common,he sounds like korean singers and other singers…not good..changed the style of voting is the solution..period.

based from what i saw on the performance night of the asian idol, it was really surprising to know that the idol from singapore bagged the title. first and foremost, his voice was not really that outstanding like the voices of Mau (Phils), Mike (Indo), and Jac (Mal). secondly, hady’s perfromances were not really remarkable in a sense that it didn’t really capture the attention of the Asian viewers. thirdly, though hady was really good-looking during that evening, his “handsome-ness” didn’t really make him the star of the nigh as how Mike, Mau, Jac and even Phuong did. i was really upset when the hosts revealed that it was hady who won the asian idol. as how others opined, the voting system sucks. however, i didn’t really mean to put hady’s talent down. he definitely can sing and perform. yet, he lacks so much to be hailed as the first asian idol. i don’t think other countries which participated the contest would join the search again (especially Indonesia which was said to be the most disappointed participant among others). -from cambodia

i can’t help but notice that everybody is upset that hady won. so what is hady’s mistake? is it the very fact that he’s breathing pisses u people off? or that he came into the competition in good spirits, knowing that he could not win against the other competitors?
yes, it is true that there are other talented singers when compared to hady. but this competition is based on votes. the blame should not be put on hady because it is the voters who voted for singapore, be it their first or second choice. when people chose singapore as their second choice because he was the weakest, hence, posing no threat to their chosen choice, they should assume that majority would vote the same way.
it is unfair to hady that everybody keep on commenting on his looks. yes, he does look good. but i don’t think he intentionally used his looks to win this competition. kudos to him too for already knowing that he could not win the competition, yet still stay strong and be a good sport about it.
in addition, this is an idol competition. idol, meaning an image of worship. i guess part of the votes goes to hady because of his appeal. it just so happened that he looked a little better when compared to the other contestants, not that the others looked really bad up on stage. by determining the winner through sms votes, i think people should have expected that hady has an equal shot of winning too. honestly, if u were to put josh hartnett and gollum side by side, i’m sure a majority votes would go to josh hartnett. it’s because of his looks. be honest.
the producers should have anticipated something like this to happen. look at how far sanjaya went in the competition. so why didn’t the producers change the rules a little. maybe 50% of the votes from judges and the other 50% from smses.
and if ur really that unhappy, then don’t go blaming on the winner but the voting system. they wanted to have asian idol because they wanted to prove to the world that aisa’s got talent. instead these accusations happened. well, guess what, i’m not proud of asians right now.
voting for all six is starting to sound like a huge mistake i made. i was really proud to see that all contestants have talent and that they can all sing but in different ways. but the reaction of their countrymen is a huge disappointment.
in the art of competition, there has to be a winner and non-winners (i didn’t say the others are losers). but from the reaction of the media from the other countries competing, their lack of news coverage on the winner does not portray their countries as being good sports, but sore losers instead.

Hady’s showmanship was the best among the rest. In this Asian Idol competition, it seems not only vocals that matter. Performance also counts. If we talk about vocals, all can sing. Even Hady admits (in a local interview prior to the event) that all of their vocals were better than him. So after vocal, performance is next. He’s great showmanship seems to appeal to most of the people. And that’s the strategy.
FYI, in Asian Idol, all contestants were given the chance to sing 2 songs - in which one of them in their local language (or second language to some). Therefore, having strong and powerful vocals won’t gain the necessary votes from the other asian listeners. In fact, majority will not understand what the contestant’s second song means. Therefore, vocals aside, the contestant must able to connect with his audiences (of various cultures) from the six countries. In my opinion, Hady scores in this area and I found that his delivery of songs are sincere and heartfelt. I actually felt his emotions without even knowing what it meant. Music should be felt without any boundaries, and I guess this is how it should be.
Whether you agree with me or not, the winner might not be the strongest vocalist of the night, but a well balance entertainer that managed to capture the heart of his audiences - cross-cultures - and he is indeed the most sincere, entertaining and confident contestant among them all. Its like his sincerity and humbleness make him stand out.

i just want to say that someone else should won the competition instead of hady. there are better contestant than him. and another thing is, the presentation of the show is very weak. the host are not good at all specially in terms of delivering their lines. their pronunciation was not clear. although exceptions must be made but still the producers could have chose better hosts that could speak english fluently. i should be world-class presentation so that other could relate to it. it was so awkward to hear them. delivery of lines is very essential in hosting. the producers could have chosen ryan agoncilio (host of phil idol) although im from the phil, there would be no bias. they need someone who could speak in english fluently so that we could compete with others such as the US, and other english base idol. thanks!

yes. i am from singapore. but my point is, yes, he did not have the best voice. but give him points for being a good sport about it. and also, no matter how much u might hate it that he wins, i guess there should be a certain amount of respect given to him.
yes, i thought that it was a little unfair that he won. jac had an awesome voice. along with mau and mike. but it is a competition after all.

voters should consider all the element despite the look it won’t go far.the most important thing is voice and talent!

Hi Ronald….you are partly correct. I am OZ but based in SG.
Having working here for the past 3 years, I found that breaking cross culture barriers is the most important thing in order to get things done….and that goes the same with Music.
Generally, my observation of Asians’ music goes as follow:
- The Indians in India goes for entertaining value
- The Philippines and Vietnamese goes for romance or sentimental value
- The Indonesians and Malaysians may indeed go for strong vocalist but my observation is that some well to do local singers are not really blessed with strong vocals but yet still do well in their local markets due to their performance and songs delivery.
How you define “the best” from 6 different cultures and languages are therefore, very subjective. Break that barrier and challenge, and you win the game!
Truthfully speaking, indeed Hady may not be the strongest singer on that night…but he won the voters by other means….I sited an example above, while listening to his first song, I can actually felt his emotions even without knowing what the song meant (I only found out later that the song is about doing your best and let the god decide the rest while surrendering to his will!…What an irony!).
Just my personal opinion and 2 cents of thought!

Retired/Professional singers are the only people who can judge accurately which of them has real talent in singing based on set standard criteria. Public doesn’t know what these criteria are. In my opinion, Singaporean will vote his own singer of course regardless of his performance. Same thing for the rest Asian Idol participants their countrymen will also vote their singers. The truth is that the ratio of Singaporean who vote their representative is probably 95% out of their 3 million population while the rest have huge population but they don’t pay attention or may be because their mobile are empty load or no cell phone at all.
What is the purpose of having those judges in front of the stage if votes from the public are the basis? They’re not supposed to do that inviting judges from various country then get the public to determine who are good. Organizer of Asian Idol that was held in Jakarta are all rubbish/idiot/stupid.

Hello asia! Hello world! In American Idol, the judges really wanted america to vote for the best(they know the best), they’re implying when they said their comment, same with the Asian Idol, the judges implied who should win…. that’s the problem of voters who have the eyes but don’t see, have the ears but don’t hear( deaf=pretending, selfish, inconsiderate etc…) and of course the style of voting(confusing and everything) The style of the contest very different from any singing Idol hosted by ABC, it was like what???Two nights are enough???what???. Is it okey with you that a fake idol is there? what a mess. .(But he’s not fake, he’s real Idol because he won hehehe)(What i mean is the real story, he’s there already, acceptance is the best). truth really hurts…I’m not subjective i’m telling the truth, not an opinion but a reality, nobody can argue with (reality) me (if you then, where’s the brain, it’s like where’s the love by blacked eyed peas, hahahaha). read carefully my comments, do i hate that he won??? hate is not part of my emotions just anger..but very controlled. but i am not angry, it’s just that hate is not part of me. Do i disrespect him(how?)…(never). Jesus told the truth but still the studpid sinners nailed him on the cross(most people are still like that nowadays). Am I criticizing??? Yes of course. jesus criticized the weak…I’m not comparing myself to Jesus..(you might reply). I am giving example in case your common sense is not working.Common sense is the most important compare to knowledge, experience and wisdom,(im reminding you in case you forgot or u don’t know). Am i not accepting the win of Hady? NO. I am someone that accepts everything but do something not just for the change but for the better even for the best.

Hmm, not sure who you’re responding to. I was given my opinion on how Hady won and if you asked me, the winning does made sense from where I stand or what I do know of Asian music cultures - Asian’s choice of idol is a compromise to all voters, based on each individual definition of “the best”. This made sense too as the best in other non Asian regions will not necessary do well in Asia - as seen by the sales of their albums in each of the country.
Trust me mate, what make sense to some may not make sense to others until you know how the cultures things work! So what works in America may not work in Asia…so thats why people create this word called “localization” :)

Hady won fair and square. I think the voting system is fair. It’s some of the voters who got their strategy wrong.
They are supposed to vote for two of their favourite idols, not the weakest (Hady wasnt the weakest in my opinion). To me Hady won because he is sincere in his delivery and at the same time charismatic. Good performance too although the others were vocally more skillful. Hady didnt try too hard to outdo the rest. He just delivered it the best he knows how and had fun doing it. There’s no air about him. Simply humble. That’s the message I get from his performances.
From my reading of comments from several forums in Malaysia and Indonesia, plus Hady’s fanclub, I gather that there are considerable number of voters who voted for him because they really do like him.
So what’s all this noise about? There’s a Malay saying that goes (loosely translated): the house is built but the hammer is still knocking. It’s over people. Live with it.
I agree with Nura. With all the nasty comments going around, I regret to say that I feel disappointed with Asia (the fans) when it comes to sportsmanship in this case.
Oh btw, I am quite surprise to find out there are those who did not vote also joined in the bashing. very amusing indeed

People are lame. They never vote, then when the one they don’t like wins, they make so much noise. Who’s fault is it? Hady? It’s simple really. The idol with the most votes win. So how to ensure that your favourite wins? By voting a lot. If you people are too stingy to vote for your so called “idol with better vocals as compared to Hady” then blame yourself and stop slamming our first Asian Idol.

Hady won,we live with it, nobody says we don’t live with it. The brain people where???????I’m not talking of it should make sense to everybody…i’m talking about the reality…It’s not about what make sense in america may not make sense in asia…..It’s about the brain, the characters, manners of people, where every individual has differences but about can be one with God….. i know God allows hady to win, maybe for us to have lessons which God keep on
reminding us.It’s good He doesn’t give up.
Who is angry??????????? We are sharing our share…we have freedom, so we can say what we wanna say,or maybe do or may think but but but

you guys are lame..and wat is this ranting abt god? go rant it at sum christian website can?
And stop complaining can? I dun tink all of Asia are stupid enuff to vote hady as 2nd fav in their smses cos they tot hady’s the weakest and came fr a tiny country thus not many ppl wud support hady..it was clearly said that you’re to vote for TWO OF YOUR FAVOURITE IDOLS, not 1 THE BEST AND ANOTHER THE WEAKEST..
damn stupid all ths voters are if they did the latter..and im sure Asians are clever enuff not to do the latter..
and im pretty damn sure that al these people complaining are juz sore losers and again, damn sure that they are the minority..as i said earlier, Asians are clever people and all ths complaining came fr stupid selfish people..juz live with it..if u think Hady doesnt deserve to win, or Singapore doesnt deserve to win, than if there’s another Asian Idol, den make sure you VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITES..and i tink the voting system is pretty fair, only the voters are stupid..

we’re not really blaming hady for bagging the title. it’s just that we can’t really absorb the fact that the Asian Idol was judged merely through text votes. For me, that was very unreliable and unbecoming. I watched American Idol since Kelly Clarkson’s time, the votes were really counted yet at the end of the competition, the contending idols were really worth voting for and they deserved to be at the finale. however, what happened in the Asian Idol was that the idols were judged simply via text-votes. and that made the whole competition disastrous! We’re not against Hady, he’s a good sport, yes. but remember, above from the being an idol, they were in a singing competition. Thus it is logical to criticize hady for not being the greatest singer and performer among the contestants yet he won the title. The competition was not fair. That’s it.

yes, i love hady and i have a crush on him. but i dont really think that he deserved the title. even the judges didnt think that hady would fit for the title. that is why I really think that the winner should be either Mau, or Mike, or Jack. It is understandable for any Singaporean to defend hady but please accept the fact that hady is not deserving for the Asian Idol title. PERIOD.

Hello Dwight D.! regarding your “but a well balance entertainer that managed to capture the heart of his audiences”-line, you are entirely wrong. Hady never became successful in capturing the hearts of the audience across Asia. You are just assuming. Did your really ask everyone in Asia if they were mesmerized by hady’s songs and performances during that competition? Of course you didn’t. Dont be assuming. That is a fallacy! I hope you know what I’m talking about. It came from your very mouth that there is a cultural differences, so why would u claim that hady did capture the heart of every Asian? You are not credible for that.
Dwight D
Dec 21, 2007 at 3:02 am
Hi Sarah
Please do note that I am not saying Hady had managed to capture ALL hearts. He probably able to capture the heart of only those minority few - perhaps 28% of the 100%! - enough to sway the votes to him.
Again, I would like to emphasize the point that how one perceive “the best” is very subjective. Especially if you are talking about audiences from 6 different cultures/languages. What seems the best or second best, may not be the best or second to another voter. Being non singaporean or asian, I am not assuming my statement here, but speaking from someone who had been working with people from those different countries/cultures.
On a side note, need to remind all that this is a popularity contest. Not just a “pure” singing contest. (the contestants were judged via audiences’ votings and/on how the audiences perceived “the best”). The winner therefore deserves the award (being the most voted of all), whether you like it or not. Period!

Life is action and reaction, evil and good it’s endless this is how life in this planet become balance. All you have here is your reaction, everyone reaction whatever it is have the same contents of evil and good. Who will say that you’re common sense is good or evil? Who will say that to kill people is good? Police man/ Troops are also killers (perhaps they also kill the wrong kills) but you cannot call them criminals. Why? Because they are in the position to destroy lives their job is to kill! As I said, judges should determine who is the best based on standard criteria i.e. 80% voice, 15% performance, 5% looks. Judges know this system very well. There will be no reactions from audience/ public/ friends/ relatives/ countrymen if the evaluation was done in this way.
All of us here who shares opinion through this site are just reactionist; don’t try to be a judge for something that is beyond your capacity and expertise. Don’t let your butt exploded result of your own reaction don’t take it seriously it’s over alright? We exist in world along with the demons so let’s carry on people. If there is any mistake during the time of competition, that mistake is not from the text voters neither from the judges. That mistake is from the management/organizer of the Asian Idol!

Hello everyone!
Here’s my thoughts about the “asian idol”.
The show was generally okay though there are certain aspects that needs improving. The 6 idols are winners in their own right. They deserve to be bestowed the title of “idol” from their respective countries. Each one gave their best performance. Each one has that talent for singing and entertaining people regardless of social strata. Each one has his own strong and weak points with regards to becoming the “asian idol”. As with all other idol formats around the world, though some people may disagree with this format, the invited judges are there to critique each performance so that they may serve as an expert opinion. In this manner, the audience most especially those spectators who are not musically trained, can use the judges comments to help arrive at a better decision on whom should be voted the winner. Each voter/spectator has his own reason for rooting for a specific performer (i.e.,came from the same group, race or country, singing prowess, showmanship, looks, over-all packaging, an avid fan/admirer, etc.) Each voter/spectator may have his own comment/opinion about each performance. All of these are part of a healthy exercise called “deliberation” wherein a person or group assesses/evaluates/examines the merits/demerits of a candidate in order to make the best choice among the pool. Again, the format is desame with other idols, though the asian voters were asked to vote their top 2 choices. It did not say the least choices. I find ur comments bout this matter are mere speculations. The viewer/voters have casted their votes. Unless the voting was rigged, the results should be respected. In addition, people should also consider the demography of the voters. The “idol show” can be categorized as both singing and popularity contest. On this note, I guess the winner is the performer who has captured the hearts of the majority of the voters. Congratulations to the winner!
Protect your rights! Vote wisely! :-)
