Australian Idol Results - October 30, 2007

by Jeanne on October 30th, 2007

tarisai and natalie

So, which one of these lovely ladies went home? Was it Tarisai or Natalie? Read all about it on Oz Music Scene!

Read my opinion of the results, after the jump!

Well, Tarisai was not my favorite contestant but I still liked her better than Marty Simpson. I think he has grown, which is good, but you just can’t like everyone and this is just an example of that. I’m still upset about Ben McKenzie being ousted so I have to put my support behind Matt Corby and Natali Gauci. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Matt is young which I think prevents him from fully connecting to certain types of songs. In what almost looks like an effort to compensate, he picks songs where he’s able to draw out the notes (too far sometimes in my opinion) and be all dreamy. He’s got a great voice so I think it’s a matter of him just maturing and learning a bit more about what his voice can do.

I think Natalie is very talented but I think she picks songs that trivialize that sometimes. I read an interview with Ben recently and he said something similar. She’s really cute but now I think her capitalization on the attention she’s gotten about those physical attributes might be overshadowing her true abilities (think of a really talented version of American Idol’s Haley Scarnato). It can turn people off if you overdo it.

Don’t misunderstand me, though. I like them both. I hate the whole “touchdown” feature of Australian Idol, however. On the North American Idol shows, the judges might have some favoritism but they don’t have “touchdowns” to hand out. It can be really awful to have a contestant never get one - especially, if they’ve earned it. Ugh.

The touchdown aspect of Australian Idol is my favorite part! And hey, the third season’s winner, Kate DeAurago never received a touchdown, so it doesn’t really matter in the end.

Truth be told, however, I prefer the hell out of Carl Riseley. He’s grown more than any Idol contestant I’ve seen (from any country and any season). Of course, I mean within the competition. Because when the competition is over, you have people who just kind of grow almost completely out of their persona in the competition (i.e., Kelly Clarkson). I love any kind of musical growth, though. But still, within the competition, I’ve yet to see a contestant grow as much as Carl.

He started out as this random kind of nice guy, quiet, seemed a little quirky. But he’s matured into a confident performer with much better vocal control and stage presence. I can’t wait to see what he does next week for Big Band!

Also, why is it that the top 6 each got to sing two songs last week but only sang one each this week?

Hey there Nick - this week the contestants only sang one song as we had the ARIA awards on (Australia’s version of the Grammys). The network’s coverage of that meant it had to be a short show this week.

What I love about music is how everyone perceives it differently. Personally, I’ve become a huge Marty fan. While it will never equal my Ben love, I think Marty’s grown tremendously and is giving great performances. I love his voice, and while he doesn’t have a lot in the way of stage presence I actually prefer to watch someone with a guitar giving a simple rendition of a song.
