Australian Idol Update - Dean Geyer
Former Australian Idol cutie, Dean Geyer, is set to be a soap star (if I understand this correctly - I don’t know Australian TV very well). The show is called Neighbours and, interestingly enough, it was a springboard for fellow Aussie, Kylie Minogue.
“I want to be another Zac Efron (from High School Musical),” Geyer joked with The Sunday Telegraph.
“The bottom line is you have to be versatile in this business.
“You can’t just stick to one thing if you want to get out there.”
Geyer, 21, will film his first scenes at the soap’s Melbourne studios this week, although he won’t be seen on television screens until early next year.
The South African-born singer has signed on as a permanent cast member, playing university drop-out and Ramsay Street resident Ty Harper.

“He is pretty similar to me,” Geyer explained.
“Ty is a confident character but he doesn’t like to show a lot of his personal side.”
Geyer has been working with Neighbours drama coach Mike Bishop for the past four months to prepare for the role, and has also taken vocal lessons to help with his accent.
“Everyone will want to see if I can act or if I bomb out, so there is a bit of pressure there,” said Geyer, who dates Lisa Origliasso of Aussie band The Veronicas.
Geyer became a household name after coming third in the 2006 series of Australian Idol.
He won’t be too far out of his comfort zone, either, as his character is an aspiring singer and will perform on the show.
“It is definitely a stepping stone for me,” he said, adding that he will record a new album next year and is hoping for it to be released internationally.
“Anything that is going to take me to another level is good for me. I am open to the opportunities.”
