Last night in a schocking results night, Ben Mulroney announced that Amberly Thiessen was leaving the show. The first twist came when Ben called Mookie Morris, Theo Tams, and Mitch MacDonald down to the center of the stage. However, he then turned to Amberly Thiessen, Earl Stevenson, and Drew Wright, all of whom were still seated on the couch and presumed to be safe, and announced that they were actually the bottom three for this week.

Upon returning from commercial break, the bottom three were all standing on stage looking a little shell-shocked at their safety being whisked away so abruptly. Ben then announced that the person with the fewest votes was Amberly Thiessen. He then said, “Alright Canada you’ve got a Top 5 and the Idol Mansion has become a Frat House.”

Amberly was visibly upset but managed to give a good, upbeat performance for the audience.

Although there was no time to ask the judges for their thoughts, I think they were clearly shocked by the results with a lot of consultation going on at the table. I wonder if any of them were discussing how quickly Amberly could be signed to one of their labels. The judges were always very clear that they were huge fans of her voice.

I was very surprised too. I had thought maybe Mitch MacDonald was in the most danger because I wasn’t sure how Canada would feel about his performance, but I never once thought it would be Amberly. While I didn’t care for her performance this week, I love the way she sings. It’s a shame she had to go home so soon, thus ruining my hopes for a Mookie-Amberly showdown on finale night.

Mookie Morris closed the show on “Canada Rocks” night and he brought down the house with Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride”. It was so perfect for him, very gritty and contemporary, lots of high energy. He is a total rock star! I think I’ve settled on a favorite, and it’s Mookie!

Sass said she’s never seen anyone grow so much throughout a season before and that he’s a superstar. Farley said he’s unbelievably charismatic, and Zack said that while the turntables were distracting it was “killer”. Jake said he’s an old soul but made it contemporary and that it was the most exciting thing he’s seen in a long time.

Drew Wright performed “That Song” and although he had trouble in parts, he had some wicked power notes and the end was amazing.

Jake said that the band got ahead of him and he wasn’t as powerful as the music was. Sass agreed, saying he ended up having ot cut his lines short but that the soft part was the money. Farley said his voice was good but he needs to thrust into his niche. Zack cut to the chase, admitting that he simply didn’t like it. Ouch!

I was really excited when I heard that Earl Stevenson was going to perform “Little Bones” by The Tragically Hip. That’s my favorite Hip song and I knew if anyone could do it justice, it would be Earl. He did a great job with it, adding that typical Earl-style to it.

Zack said it was really strong but still a bit too Hip. Jake said that it’s really hard to do Hip songs but that he managed to re-invent it. Sass said it was one of the best rock performances she had seen on that stage, while Farley appreciated the way he always brings some soul to every performance.

Apparently not many people had heard Joel Plaskett’s “I Love This Town” until Mitch MacDonald sang it for “Canada Rocks” night. Although I do like the song, I was a little underwhelmed by the performance. It was okay but I’m worried that it wasn’t a good choice and that he will be in danger for the results because of it.

Farley said he seemed very comfortable and took ownership of the song, while Zack said he’s slipped back into his Paul Simon pocket. Jake agreed on the Paul Simon aspect and said he really liked the guitar picking. Sass thought it suited him and that he showed great ease.

The Tams was back to the piano for “Canada Rocks” night, and he seemed to be very comfortable there. He had great vocals and a lot of fantastic energy, proving that sitting at a piano is NOT boring.

Sass said he brought great physicality to the song and his last note blew her away; Farley agreed that the song was full of energy. Zack said it was the truest and best performance he’s done so far and Jake said that he’s so interconnected between voice and piano.

Amberly Thiessen kicked off the top six performances on “Canada Rocks” night by singing Feist’s “1234″. I had a hard time with this performance because as much as I love Amberly, I think I’m one of the three people in Canada that doesn’t like Feist and I absolutely hate that song. It fit her voice but that’s about all I can say about it.

Jake said it was strong vocally, but she didn’t do much to change it from Feist’s version. Sass said she’s definitely got the singing down, though Farley said he’d like to see her use the stage more when she’s singing such a vibrant song. Zack wasn’t a fan of her outfit, saying it was like watching “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark sing Feist”.

The other day I posted about how David Cook’s single, “Time Of My Life” was played during the end of the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. I thought it was a one-time thing, which was cool enough all on its own.

However, apparently NBC is using it during the closing credits of all their Olympic coverage! That is pretty good for David’s career, it’s going to spread his song to people who don’t follow American Idol (yes they apparently exist) and may not know much about his music.

Obviously someone over at NBC is a huge David Cook fan – it’s good to know he has fans in all professions!

Katharine McPhee has her big movie debut coming up, where she plays a pregnant sorority girl in the film The House Bunny. She spoke about it briefly with Newsweek, mentioning that while it was fun to pretend she was pregnant, the big fake belly pad was a bit annoying.

My favorite part of the mini-interview was when Newsweek sort of put its foot in its mouth by bringing up the age gap between Katharine and her husband.

Do you get tired of people bringing up the 19-year age difference between you and your husband?
You know, not that many people bring it up.

Had you always been attracted to older men?
No. He’s the first and last old man that I’ll be attracted to.
