Canadian Idol 6 Auditions – Day 1

June 4, 2008 by Jeanne

logo Canadian Idol started last night and I ordinarily blog about it that same day but I was having “technical” difficulties.  I’m here now and I will give you the low-down from last night.  Also, I will be live-blogging the show from now on so feel free to pop by on Idol nights and chat with me.

Here’s a video from the beginning of the show:

Toronto Auditions

To kick off the auditions, Brian Melo, gave an outdoor concert for them along with Natasha Bedenfield.  Nice, eh?

The first guy to audition is very… Gary Sneddon sang “Zoot Suit Riot” and Jake said that he is really weird and that he can’t see people voting for him.  Diana Salvatore sang “Piece of My Heart” and was a little scary during the performance… M.C. sang “I Can See Clearly Now” but… the singing was just bad…

Tayler Abrahmse was the first one put through to the next round for his rendition of “Tie Your Mother Down” even though Zack Werner said he sounded like a chewing gum commercial (he then sang the Juicy Fruit jingle and Jake Gold cracked up, lol!!!).

Vanessa Kalala sang “And, I Am Telling You.”

image Tetiana Ostapowych sang “You Know I’m No Good” and it was good, she was put through to the next round but didn’t she look familiar to anyone???  She auditions at the San Diego auditions for American Idol.  Watch that audition here.   I thought she was good but as a Torontonian, it would have been nice if she had tried Canadian Idol before she jumped over to American Idol but I digress…

MORE AFTER THE JUMP!

Omar Lunan sang “I Don’t Wanna Bore” and the most of the judges liked him but Sass Jordan said he was on the runny side and Zack called him a wedding singer.  He was put through to the next round.

Oliver Pigott sang a song that I don’t recognize and while I didn’t actually like but Jake said it was the best audition he’s ever seen.  They said so many great things about him and I totally didn’t get it but whatever…  I really liked him as a musician but didn’t love the singing…

Sebastian Pigott came in to audition and they said he wasn’t as good musically or vocally but that he had so much charisma that his limitations don’t really matter.  I liked Sebastian more than Oliver, if I can be honest but whatever…

Calgary Auditions (check out my pictures from the auditions)

Courtney Waldie got really close to the judges’ desk to sing “I Will Always Love You” and it was terrible.  They asked her to sing “Amazing Grace” and Sass almost collapsed laughing.  It was pretty funny!

Franco Baccari sang a reggaed-up version of “Sexual Healing” and they didn’t even let him finish his song.  He was sooo shocked.

Jesse Cottam sang “She Talks to Angels” and he was a little loud but I liked him.  They put him through to the next round!

Jully Black was great in the audition holding area, singing and encouraging the hopefuls.  I really like her.  She’s just as nice in person.

Theo Tams sang “Collide” and he had the sweatiest armpits but he was so sweet and good.  The judges really liked him and he was put through to the next round.

As a poke at the country-ness of my fine city, Calgary, they showed a collection of female auditions using the song “Before He Cheats.”  I thought some of those girls were good!

Edmonton Auditions

Aaron Biblow promises to be Canada’s rock star.  His audition was hilarious.  He just yelled and whined and seemed like he thought too much of himself.  Jason Morgan was a great guitarist but as soon as he started singing – wowza!  That was terrible! Alena Cherry sang “I Will Always Love You” and… no.  Greg McKenna sang “Life Goes On” and it was really bad.  He begged to be put through to the next round.

Brianne Chalifour sang “Barracuda” and it was okay (not great) but Jake said she needed exposure and experience (she’s from a town of 300 in Saskatchewan) and was put through based on that.  I’m happy with that.

Earl Stevenson sang “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and he blew me away.  He is so bluesy and cool.  He was sent through immediately!!!

I’m glad the show is back! Earl was awesome; i hope he’s not a stoner though… I missed the toronto auditions… overall a really great start to an awesome summer

I love how Greg Neufeld’s return last year after failing to make the top 10 the year before has opened up the door for possible returns from others who came up short.

I mean, how awesome would it be if Liam Styles Chang or Tyler Mullendore came back? Awesome.

And of all the Idol shows I watch (American Idol, Australian Idol, and Canadian Idol), I’ve always felt that Canadian Idol has the lowest standards for what it takes to get on the show. As cute and talented as she was, I don’t think Carly Rae Jepsen would have gotten within sniffing distance of third place if it had been one of the other Idol shows. Ditto some of their other alums like Rex Goudie (he probably perplexes me the most. I like him, though), Craig Sharpe, and Brandon Jones (who I also liked, honestly). Also, in no way were the Spigot brothers anywhere near the best that show has had to offer. Jacob Hoggard and Greg Neufeld come immediately to mind.

Some of their refusals really baffled me, though. I actually really liked Franco Baccari, but I guess the judges already saw season 6 of American Idol and didn’t feel the world needed another Blake Lewis. Oh well, I’m still addicted to this show anyway, and these judges are way more likable than their American counterparts.

Oh, and the song Omar sang is called “Knocks Me Off My Feet.”
