Canadian Idol July 3, 2007 - Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen is very cute. Sometimes, I wonder about her singing, though. I loved her in the audition and I still think she`s great but she is the kind of singer that sounds best singing their own original music. Imagine Madonna, Nelly Furtado or Chantal Kreviazuk singing someone else`s tunes - not good.

I think you’re right about the unique sound of Carly Rae’s voice and how difficult song choice is going to be. While her tone is not dissimilar from Sarah Slean, whose song she sang last night, she lacks the power of Slean and resorted to growling to make up for the lack of power and ended up losing the melody. Which is too bad because (a) I love that song and she didn’t do it justice and (b) I still think she’s very talented but she’s gotta pick the right songs to stay!

I have to disagree with you. Carly is very good at singing other people’s songs as well as her own. She has been singing old jazz songs for years. I am lucky enough to have had her sing in my swing band for two years, the Blue Morris 6:

Different style, I know, but she certainly has a lot of experience singing other people’s songs. We even recorded a song that I wrote for her called “Blue for Carly.”
That being said, I’ve heard her perform a number of her own original songs and she’s a talented songwriter… so either way is good in my opinion.
