Canadian Idol’s Ben Mulroney Does Montreal Food Tour

Canadian Idol host, Ben Mulroney, did a food tour in Montreal and it is so unfair!  Like me, Ben is a former Montrealer and loves going back for the good eats (I’m almost in tears just thinking about it since he picked so many of my favorites!).

“It’s a comfortable feeling knowing I’m eating exactly what I want to be eating,” said Ben.  “There’s no smoked meat in Toronto, none of these hotdogs, no Bar-B-Barn, which is better for my waistline, for sure I grant you that, but it doesn’t make me happy. I was planning my menu weeks ago.”

What were Ben’s picks? 

For smoked meat he picked my mom’s favorite spot - Schwartz’s.  I’m not a big smoked meat fan but he says “Schwartz’s really is the pinnacle and I love it.  Some people enjoy the fatty meat; ironically I don’t, given what we’re talking about right now. I sort of like the lean but today I’m going to go with the medium.”

For hot dogs he chose The Orange Julep, LaFleur and La Belle Province.  He actually refers to the three as a “trifecta” where you can get “steamé” (steamies) or “toasté” (toasties).  I love La Belle and I swear, when I finally found buns out in Calgary like the toasté ones, I went crazy (it took 4 years!). 

For hamburgers, he picked Chez Nick, which is also the place where he got engaged (I guess he really likes it!).  What does he get every time?  “Bacon cheeseburger, side of fries with gravy, it’s the thick gravy –  the French-Canadian stuff they use for the poutine — and a black cherry cola.”

For ribs he picked one of my favorite places to eat on earth - The Bar-B-Barn.  Oh, j’ai mon voyage!    “There’s nothing like it in the world, because no one makes ribs like that,” said Ben.  You got that right!  I have to add Baton Rouge to this list because those ribs are pretty darned awesome too!
