Carly Smithson Voted Off American Idol

Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson were in the bottom two on American Idol last night and I really wasn’t sure which way it was going to go. I could understand why they were there (for two very different reasons and NOT because I necessarily thought they belonged there) but I was still a little surprised. I’m not trying to pick on anyone, but I really thought these two spots might be reserved for Jason Castro and Brooke White. I guess their uniqueness is more appealing to the audience.
In the end, Carly was sent home. What do you think? Did the right person leave? In the meantime, watch Carly’s farewell performance:

She wasn’t the worst last night, she should have lasted another week. Dreadlocks needs to go home. He mumbles.
I don’t think “not being the worst” is a good excuse. She was not good, She was pitchy, behind the music, forgot some words and was screechy. Just because a lot of the best top 12 ever have problems performing does not excuse a poor performance. Personally, I would have liked to see 4 people thrown off yesterday. How hard is it to sing on key and on the beat? People have managed it other years.
I was sorry to see Carly go, but it seems like she was one of those people that “has potential” but you never really seem to see it.
On the other hand, Jason and Brooke DEFINITELY should have been in the bottom two if it was based on performance alone.
Jason Castro needs to go home. We get it already - he’s cute and sings softly, but I’ve had enough!!!
I think Carly chose a poor song and paid the price. That JC Superstar song is considered blasphemous by most of middle america. She sang it great, I just think it probably offended a lot of the folks.
tallfreak! I’m with you. That guy needs to be sitting around a campfire not on stage, lol. A couple of songs he sang that I like, I had to remove them from my iPod after hearing him sing it - totally ruined the songs for me…lol
It was definitely a surprising week. Brooke or Jason should have gone. Brooke is probably getting the sympathy vote. This is the second time she re-started a song. Imagine her concerts…ooops wait let me re-start I forgot my own lyrics! LOL
Jason is just a little boring and plain. He is not as good as the rest of the competition.
If it was based on performance Jason Castro and Brooke White would have been the bottom 2. Carly Smithson is at least one of the top 3 singers easily in my opinion. At least she was not too crushed about being sent home. Here is another good article on American Idol:

Ah ha! Finally some clarity on why Brooke didn’t go last night…thanks to VoteForTheWorst.com they saved Brooke. This is so unfair to the contestants and the voters/loyal viewers. Contestants are getting shafted b/c of this site (VFTW) Brooke should have been in the bottom 2 and she wasn’t so how fair is the voting system? I know we go through this every year, and it is just as upsetting every year that b/c people don’t like the show, they have nothing better to do than ruin it. I wonder how these people would feel if someone ruined their life for no reason just cuz they are bored or their life’s mission is make everyone around them miserable and ruin lives.
The voting system stinks.
dreadlocks should have been long gone by now. all his songs sound the same. he is boring. he is not interested. carly most definitely should have lasted at least another week. i like brooke but she does not deserve to still be there. i have not been very impressed with this season of AI.
Carly, is loud, angry, covered with hideous tattoos. All she does is have a loud voice huge lungs . I don’t like to listen to someone shouting and screaming in my ears. that is not music . Moreover, she not an American already had a record from Randy’s ex record company MCA.. Randy is the one pushing her . Randy likes loud belting singing diva .. but is this what Americe wants — NO !
Carly goes but Jason and Brooke stay — in what universe? Did anyone notice Jason yawning while awaiting his fate? The vote was a disgrace!
Idol Fan - it’s because Vote For The Worst.com has a major influence and they pushed everyone to vote for Brooke! Sux I know but obviously AI doesn’t care about the twisted voting system so…..such is life. But both of those people you mentioned should have been gone.
I’m getting sick and tired of the voting system which makes me not want to watch at all. When are they going to allow the judges to vote in along with the american audience? They should take the audience vote and allow the judges to choose who should be sent home and average together. That’s what the judges are there for and if your not counting their opinion then it’s a waist of time. This will keep it more fair as Carly got shafted last night. Who in the hell is still voting for Brooke? She couldn’t hit a high note if she tried and all the songs she has song from the very beginning are monotone. She pales in comparison to the other singers and same goes for Jason. Stop voting on looks and vote on their performance. That’s what sucks about this show.
Well, It’s sad to see Carly go…but what’s even sadder is that I’m not devastated. I wish she could have shown more of who she was over her stay with Idol. It was hard to like her since she barely showed who she was, which is a shame because her voice is great and has so much potential.
But I agree with some of you guys that either Jason or Brooke should have gone home. Although I really like Jason, I think there is so much tremendous singing talent this year that he simply must go soon. But, I’d take him over Brooke any day.
Carly definitely should not have gone home. She was the best, along with David C. that night. The worst were Brooke, who should have gone home, and David A.
It was time for Carly to go. Someone has to leave! Why not her? Sure she has a powerful voice. But that’s it. There’s nothing unique about her. It’s all been done before. Big voice. Angry girl. Big tattoos. I had enough of her. Next?!
Yes, it should have been Brooke this week, but I have a feeling that middle America — who was previously voting for Kristy Lee Cook — helped keep Brooke in the competition. They didn’t have Kristy to vote for! So, instead they dialed in their votes for Brooke.
I think the final 3 will be the two Davids, and Jason. One of the Davids will win. It could be either one! They are both great vocalists. (My favorite is still Jason, but I know…I know…he is not a powerhouse singer. He is more like a Jack Johnson. But that’s why I like him so much! But I can agree that he should not take the crown. It should be either David C or David A.)
P.S. The reason why I think either David C or David A will (or should) take the Idol crown this year is because they are the only two this season who have been CONSISTENTLY good. And neither of them has been in the bottom 2. It’s all about consistency. They have been good in just about every show this season, except for maybe one a piece, which is more than the others can say. I still love Jason, though.
BOO. Jason/Brooke are total losers. They can’t even sing their respective songs well, unlike Carly who did pretty good that time.
Why oh why did this happen?
Carly had a great singing voice. Without her, who will compete with David Cook? Its gonna be a sure win for him, unless David Archuleta pulls off a media scandal.
Maybe be the weird one here, but no one on this year’s AI has blown me away. IMO this year lacks the talent of previous years. Not once have I been “wowed” like previous years with Jordin and Melinda, Carrie and Bo, Diana and Fantasia, Clay, Kim and Ruben and Kelly. IMO, have not seen a performance that equals the talent of any of these. DA sounds the same every week and even tho he is cute as can be and is talented, he always looks like he is in pain when he sings. I think Carly has a good voice and with the right song would sound great but there is just something about her that I didn’t like. Brooke - sorry, don’t see anything there. Jason – unique but should not be in the top 5. If I placed the top 5, it would be the Davids, Michael, Carly and Syesha. But that shows what I know. America obviously doesn’t agree. I do think the Davids are the best of the bunch and like DC the most.

I couldn”t have said it better myself. I don”t think there is much talent this year. DavidA is a very POOR substitute for Clay and the rest don”t compare to Melinda, Doughtry, Fanyasia etc. It is very disappointing.I don”t care who wins because their careers will be a splash in the pan. AKayra, I do believe Syesha has found her nitch on Broadway. She was the only one with any stage presence or charisma..
I agree with you on the fact that Brooke and Jason should have been the bottom two. I really liked Jason at the beginning but I feel like every week we get the same thing from him… And I like Brooke as well but she’s been struggling the last few weeks… I’m gonna miss Carly
What an utterly big joke AI has become. I thought this was about true talent, not a popularity contest. Jason, should have left along time ago. has no range or depth compared to the top 5 left. sad sad sad..Carly on the other hand was proof of how screwed up American Idol has become. She had true talent and appeal..
SHE DID NOT DESERVE TO GO HOME i repeat DID NOT DESERVE TO GO HOME……. she should have gone to top 4 or 3……..she didn’t pick the wrong song that was the perfect song for HER unless you want her to sing a boring song like all i ask of you………..I WILL MISS CARLY 4ever…..
