David Archuleta Song Choice Debate

by Jeanne on March 26th, 2008

Have people really not heard this song before?  Last night on American Idol, David Archuleta sang “You’re The Voice” and not only do I know this song, I love it.  I do, however, agree that this was not David’s style, he looked uncomfortable (but great) to me and I could believe that his dad had something to do with it.  Never had a situation quite like this on Idol before, have we?  Of course, TMZ is covering this possible controversy like crazy…

It’s just interesting that David A Picked a Song that was covered by David Foster, the David Foster that was on the show a while back and it producing Kat McPhee. That song choice was either a suck up or a deal in the making. A Quick I-tunes royalty for DF as a sign me bonus?

There was a story on http://idol-mania.com/american-idol-fan that posed the question why David A could sing a song from 1986 when he was born in 1990, and just the cover was from 1990 David Foster. Interesting that all 9 others picked songs from their birth year except Archuleta.

Daddy Jeff is working the angles for sure.

Being a proud Australian, and loving John Farnham’s voice and music, I was disgraced by the American Idol judges’ attitudes towards the song! I was really offended, they seemed to be shocked that an American would sing an AMAZING (listen to Farnham singing it) Australian song. I’ll still watch the show, but from now on it will be with slight annoyance towards the judges. They were really rude last night!

AI fan, IMO, David Cook was equally in the wrong last night - he sang a (very recent) cover of an MJ song from his birth year, which was SO different from the original that it was practically a completely different song. That annoyed me because I thought, gee, David must be “really” young to have been born when that cover of the song came out!

Todd…but you have to go with when the song was written and first recorded! Not when it was rerecorded! So, David Cook was in the right to do it.

Todd - Agree about the Australia song thing. Their comments last night were ridiculous (especially Simon).

Lee - Year of production is definitely what you go with, so I agree. Most of these people go with an updated version and I’m cool with it.

So my wife is huge on American idol. I watch with her on occasion but tire of hearing songs sung that I have heard from better singers. I like it most when the songs are original or not well known. This song was refreshing and new to me so I really liked it. The John Farnham version is awesome but I think I liked it better when David sang it. Rare for me.

Jeanne, do you seriously believe it wasn’t the right song for David? Why? What should be the right song for him? I think it was a fun song typical of David..

First, Simon shouldn’t take the liberty to make a comment such as that on the whiff of gossip-it’s unfair and crossing the line. Simon making the “amusement park” reference was also unfair. At this point David’s a kid who should be allowed to pursue his musical vision and his enjoyment of and desire to sing that tune is part of the vision.
While I think David did a fine job - his voice was strong and I think he had fun with it- I’m not a big fan of the song.
I think the problem for many of us (maybe including Simon) is that after hearing David’s searing emotional take on “Imagine” and “Long and Winding Road and even “Heaven”, we want to be affected by his singing that way, always. The goosebumps factor is addictive, no question.
I want to hear David do something a little darker and still blow us away emotionally.
David Cook’s, take on Billie Jean definitely had that. He took Chris Cornell’s version even further up the emotional ladder.
Check out David A. doing “Angels” on Youtube from a couple of years ago - it has that quality- it would be great to hear how he would sing it now. (There are two- the one on stage with the lights turned down is stronger)

David’s song last week is a great song and I can’t believe American’s don’t know it. I remember it very well. Obviously though David didn’t listen to the lyrics or the original version very well. It does have a semi-fast tempo, but it is not a happy song and David sung it with the OOOHHHHH OHHHHH in it and smiling the entire time. No performance points at all, that is where I think Simon was absolutely right about the amusement park show

Have you ever heard the Rebecca St.James version, it is GREAT! That is the version I heard and really remembered when David was singing, that really made his version so campy. Her version is more rocker and also very poignant. I do like the way John Farnham and Heart do the Ohhhhh ohhh ah ohhh ah ohhhhs, but David did the whole song happy

Coke was the sponsor of that song and used Youre the voice in some spots of coke light. Come back to reality people, a tv show is an ad show, this is the business: that is the reason of David’s “choice”

so david definately killed the song. his voice cracked so bad. but its proven that male singers who start at a young age, dont vocally mature until a lot later in life. you cant blame it on puberty. but like i love that boy. he could sound like dying cat, and i would vote for him.
i think that song is amazing. my friend David Cruz sanfg it to me in comparison to David Archuleta’s and i realized that maybe it takes a certain voice to sing certain sonngs. David A can sing, undoubtidly, but from what ive seen, when he tries to play it safe, he usually gats too comfortable and messes up. but i love him, hes cute, and has an amazing voice. so like. yeah.
