Episode #532 - Third Round
Now it’s time for the contestants to pick their own songs. Elliott is choosing the Donnie Hathaway version of Ray Charle’s song, “I Believe to My Soul”. It started off well for me, but again, it just gets lost on me. I’m just not sure what the deal is with Elliott. I really like him, but just not “memorable” again. I know, I know, I’m overusing that statement. He’s definitely putting some more energy into the performance and seems like he’s loosening up like Simon asked. Let’s see what the judges have to say about it though. Randy’s not sure about the song choice, but he says he can definitely sing. I agree! Paula says the song isn’t one people can really connect with. He’s a funky, white boy. Simon says his songs are not going to carry him through to next week. Simon commends him on his performance and his talent and says regardless, he’ll have made his mother proud.
Katharine is singing “I Ain’t Go Nuthin’ But the Blues”. I’m hoping since she’s picked this song, it’s going to be one she can really connect with and sing. This definitely fits her style and passion more. Very folksy, bluesy, jazzy feel to her music and sound. These types of songs really show of her ability to fly around on her vocal range as well. She’s done exactly what I was hoping, she picked a song that works for her. I think the judges will agree. Randy says the song was just “okay”. Randy just doesn’t know what to say. Paula says the magic was her last performance with “Somewhere….” Simon says he wants to remember her from her last song, wishes they could have switched them around. Either way, Katharine definitely has a career ahead of her regardless of what happens.
Taylor will wrap up the evening with “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding. Again, this will be perfect for him. Definitely his style. I was just talking with someone the other day that Taylor should be singing some Otis Redding numbers. Taylor says this one is for his “Soul Patrol”. Oh yeah! Nice arrangement, they’re kicking it into the upbeat, faster tempo section. This is really letting Taylor showcase his ability to provide a great performance. He’s through to final round! He’s got this thing won in my opinion. I just don’t see anyone coming close at this point. Randy has a new name for Taylor, “Have A Good Time Funky Taylor”. Paula said she picked this song first and he picked it himself. She waited all season. Simon said good song, hideous ending but Simon will see him next Tuesday for the finals! SOUL PATROL! SOUL PATROL! SOUL PATROL! SOUL PATROL!
