Evaluating Blake Lewis

by Jeanne on May 21st, 2007

auditionSince it’s the last week, I thought it was important to do a recap and give my opinion of American Idol finalist, Blake Lewis. I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised by Blake being one of this season’s finalists but when I took a moment to think about it, I can see all of the reasons why America has fallen in love with him.

He really stood out at his audition for me. The Seattle auditions were terrible this year and I remembered him as a bright spot in an otherwise bleak episode. Still, I forgot about him as more people made it to Hollywood, but during Hollywood Week he was no longer so easy to forget. Here’s what he did with his group - it’s by far the best Hollywood Week group performance I have ever seen:

blake-lewisWhen he got to perform live, on a real stage, he did not disappoint me. I love British bands and when he did not only a Keane song but also one by Jamiroquai, I knew he was different - actually, he was daring to be different. Sometimes the risk was not well received (remember Diana Ross’ “You Keep Me Hanging On?” Yikes!) and other times, he is heralded for what seems to be sheer creativity. His performance of Bon Jovi’s “Shot Through The Heart (You Give Love a Bad Name)” was so incredible, that some say it was the best perfomance of the season, so far.

It’s not all positive, however. Blake has his own strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: Creativity, willingness to take risks, unique, stylish, modern, attractive, strong fanbase and showmanship. I read in People magazine that he actually makes his own pants.

Weaknesses: Blake is a good singer but he is not necessarily a great singer. He does, however, make up for it in showmanship and his vocal ability is more than proficient enough to guarantee a strong career.

Beatboxing: Oh boy… this can go either way for Blake. If he can learn when to use this extraordinary talent, it will be a powerful weapon. He is skilled, but sometimes has me wondering if he needs to join Beatboxers Anonymous. Even great things in excess can be bad.

Final verdict: Blake is going to be a great songwriter and performer. Many of his performances are memorable because he takes risks and is original. As we’ve seen with Kelly Clarkson’s recent troubles, an artist who can write and create their own music is very valuable - if the music is good, of course. Blake can deliver. I believe it.

I appreciate the talent of Jordin Sparks, but I believe Blake should have won American Idol. He has the originally and the ability to take risks and can sing anything. That last song, This Is My Now, was in no way fair for him to have to sing. First of all, it was not the greatest. I dont think Jordin could do what Blake does with his songs. I believe the only reason Jordin was better is because that is the type music she sings. It was a strange song to me. I was not impressed with it.

Blake is amazing! I believe he is one of the best American Idol has even had grace its stage. (Of course, other than Taylor Hicks) who will always be my favorite, but Blake is a close second.

All I can say is, GOOD LUCK BLAKE!!!! I know you will be fine, and your sales will hopefully out sell Chris Daughtry. Chris is great, but I prefer Taylor and Blake. Blake, cant wait to see you on tour, and in the future.
