Every Season Has Them - Conspiracy Theories
Why did Mario Vasquez suddenly quit? How did Scott Savol even make it into the top 6? Was Constantine Maroulis’ time really up after never even being in the bottom three before he was eliminated?

These types of questions have haunted fans over the years and, in all honesty, make the show that much more entertaining.

Now it’s Sanjaya Malakar’s turn. Almost every media outlet has covered it to some degree. USA Today interviewed fans who have said that, if Sanjaya were to win, they would abandon the show. However, one woman said she was shocked by her husband’s loyalty to the contestant. Here’s a look at some of the more popular theories for his longevity.
VOTE FOR THE WORST THEORY
Idol fans have been complaining about votefortheworst.com since its inception. Basically, the creators of this site pick who they feel is the “worst” contestant on the show and ask their loyal visitors to vote for them. For the last few weeks, the site has promoted voting for Sanjaya. Could this be the reason for his staying power?
Not likely, if you believe anything Nigel Lythgoe has to say. As American Idol’s producer he explained that, “When you’re getting 30 million votes, whatever that Web site can do is just not enough.”
Besides, Dave Della Terza believes that Sanjaya gets more votes on his own. “It makes the show infinitely more entertaining when Sanjaya comes out with a new hairdo than when LaKisha [Jones] sings another boring ballad,” he said.
THE HOWARD STERN CONNECTION
Is this man to blame???
From the common blog to MTV News, wild theories connected to Howard Stern are rapidly circulating. As a self-professed American Idol junkie, Stern has been using his Sirius Satellite Radio channel to urge his listeners to vote for Sanjaya. Since his move to Sirius, the company has seen 6 million new subscriptions (myself included).
With Howard Stern’s audience and votefortheworst.com’s visitors, is it possible that they could sway the vote??? We may never know.
MASS HYSTERIA

Anyone who watched the show last week saw the young fan crying during Sanjaya’s performance. Are young girls affecting the vote?

A woman on myspace says she will starve herself until Sanjaya has been voted off. Other anti-Sanjaya profiles have been created. With so many people using myspace, is this just more publicity for Sanjaya?
MAJOR BUZZ
I said it once and I’ll say it again. I think the biggest reason why Sanjaya is still around is the amount of buzz he has created.
As Catherine Dunne, an Atlanta vocal coach put it, “this year’s crop of “Idol” contestants are so average it’s ridiculous. Sanjaya was the most interesting thing I saw [Tuesday night.] He’s kind of cool. He’s ignoring the critics and following his heart.”
This sentiment was echoed by Debra Byrd, an “Idol” vocal coach, who said that Sanjaya is a fun, witty kid with potential. “His first performance, he was not in tune,” she said. “But he’s getting progressively better. You realize he can sing. I make him work for it.” Source
Searches for Sanjaya and his wacky hair styles have gone through the roof and even Ryan Seacrest had to poke fun at the situation.
You be the judge. In the meantime, keep voting!

You raise a good point. I have to admit that this season is a bit lackluster in my opinion, as well. The spark is just missing. When people leave, it’s kind of like “oh well.” Whereas in previous seasons, I often felt passionately about certain contestants and would cry fowl over their being voted off. I haven’t seen this kind of uproar yet.
