Final Performance Show!!!

by Jason on May 23rd, 2006

Each contestant will have three performances each tonight. Who will it be? Definitely two great performers, but Taylor has definitely been outperforming Katharine. It comes down to this, the final two:

  • Katharine McPhee vs. Taylor Hicks
  • Soul Patrol vs. McPheever

Katharine will start off the performances tonight.

…after these messages…

Katharine is singing “The Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”. She’s already sang this song, I didn’t catch it but are all of the songs tonight going to be repeats? I sure hope not. That would be way to safe. If it is, Katharine has chosen well because this was one of better songs. I’ve said it before, she doesn’t outsing on this song and that definitely plays in her favor.

The judges say:

  • Randy: Finally looked like she was having fun, not “super exciting” to him since he heard it before, but feels she sang it better
  • Paula: Fun opening, but more and better from her to come. Paula not saying much.
  • Simon: Good with a small “g”. Doesn’t think she picked the best song, feels like that song was a warm up as well.

Taylor’s singing “Living for the City”. Another repeat song. One of his good performances, but not one of his best in my opinion. Maybe they’re both starting very strategically. He’s wearing a snazzy, purple velvet blazer. I’m not thoroughly enjoying this performance. He’s definitely going to need to step it up in the last two songs.

  • Randy: Tough to sing Stevie Wonder, but Taylor doesn’t care he’ll sing any song, by anybody, any time.
  • Paula: Loved the performance, said she matched Taylor tonight
  • Simon: Simon said it was a great, energetic start to the evening. Wasn’t a big fan of the jacket. Big surprise!

More to come, including Katharine singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”…

Katharine is singing probably my favorite song of hers from the competition. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I’m not sure I like hearing repeats though. Even with these songs that I love. I don’t think she’s singing it as well as she did the first time though. Katharine has just a great, strong voice and beautiful sound for songs like this. That talent mixed with her natural beauty will take her very far, whether it be as one of THE American Idol’s or not. Let’s see what the judges have to say about the performance:

  • Randy: [Family issue, missed Randy’s comments]
  • Paula: You owned it up there.
  • Simon: She was “slaughtered” in the first round, but this was her best performance of the competition so far

Up next is Taylor, singing his favorite song of the season…

…after these messages…

Taylor’s singing “Leave On” for his second performance. This is his favorite song from the season. I can understand why he likes this song. It’s got a lot of heart and soul behind it. I think it really showcases his range of styles with a slow start that really works up into a higher energy level. The song also gives him a great opportunity to belt out some vocals. The song as a whole doesn’t really do a lot for me overall though. Judges?

  • Randy: Nice song, it was a little pitchy this time.
  • Paula: Says it wasn’t pitchy, but just the “essence” of who he is
  • Simon: Not as popular as the first song, Katharine has taken the second round.

Looking forward to Round 3, it definitely can’t be a tie. Let’s see what happens.

…after these messages…

The contestants are singing their personal first singles. Katharine’s is “My Destiny”. Katharine looks stunning (man! I sound like Paula). I’m not really impressed with the song at all. It sounds really pitchy, and doesn’t highlight her style in my opinion. Definitely not an award winning song in my mind. Wonder if the judges will agree. Urrghh! It’s getting worse at the end! Ouch! I’m hearing the sounds of nails in the coffin and Katharine’s doing it herself.

  • Randy: She looks amazing. Sounded really good. He did NOT love the song
  • Paula: Not her fault, she’s brilliant
  • Simon: She went from brilliant to quite good in one song. Delighted she’s in the final. Vote for Kat and remember the 2nd song.

Taylor will sing his first single after the break.

…after these messages…

Taylor’s last performance with “Do I Make You Proud”. I can tell from the title alone, I’m going to love this song. Song definitely has a lot of emotion in it for Taylor. You can tell it as he sings. It’s starting off a little two slow for me, now it’s picking up. Taylor’s making the best of this song, but whoever wrote these two songs for the contestants, did a horrible job in my opinion. I don’t think they captured the style of either the contestants as well as they could have. Let’s see what the judges say:

  • Randy: You know how to make it yours. No matter what the song. You know who you are and you sing it for you
  • Paula: Same as Randy, you stay true to yourself and it doesn’t matter what the song is, you insert your riffs and kicks and make it totally your own
  • Simon: Assuming the contest was tied, you just won American Idol

I agree with Simon, but we’ll have to find out tomorrow what America thinks. For now it’s time for the finale of House, be sure and check out House is Right for all the scoop. I’ve also gotta call Comcast because I just realized that something’s screwed up with the DVR. Looks like it didn’t record Idol and is missing House. Good thing I don’t trust it and have TiVo recording it as well.
