Idol Face Off - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Today’s Idol Face Off has Clay Aiken (American Idol) facing off against Anthony Callea (Australian Idol). He’s a very worthy opponent in my eyes so give him a chance!!!

I loved, loved, loved Clay singing that song back in 2003 and I still love it today. Wow. Anthony has a great voice and I’d like to see more from him, but it doesn’t do to me what Clay’s does. I’ll have to vote for Clay here.

I’m going with Clay on this one because he sings this song so superbly. However, Anthony has a wonderful voice, too. Does he have a CD out?

Anthony definately is a very worthy opponent, and very much my choice. Clay was good too!

Maybe I’m just too stuck back with the original, but I always hear this as a heartfelt promise by an individual. So I found the sheer number of people, the swaying arms and the smiles really distracting. I far prefer Anthony’s version for the beauty and sheer power of his voice and the simpler but more emotional interpretation. I’ve heard other things from Clay and liked them more than this one.

I know Clay’s version of BOTW is amazing, but as an Australian and a die-hard Anthony fan I have to vote for my boy :D
Deedee, Anthony has released two albums, a plethora of singles, and a concert dvd since finishing Idol. His official website (http://www.anthonycallea.com.au/) has a full list of all his releases. And if you liked his BOTW performance, I would highly recommend checking out his performance of The Prayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TwBZOttjlM) which is absolutely brilliant.

The brilliant Anthony Callea!! Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of his no. 1 hits. Glorious voice, both live and in recording.

Hey deedee, You should check out some of Anthony’s other clips on Youtube, he like Clay came 2nd in his series, and he went on to outdo the winner 10fold. He holds the record for the highest selling single in Australian Music history with his beautiful version of The Prayer, which he performed on Idol Top 8 Idol’s choice night and it had the whole country talking about and still to this day 3 years on its still used as a benchmark on Idol. He has performed for Queen Elizabeth 11 and Pavarotti personally requested him to perform at a Gala night he in Pav’s honour. He has two CD’s out, self titled debut album Anthony Callea and his sophomore album A New Chapter, which he co-wrote 14 of the tracks.
He is truley a wonderful artist and he is currently rehearsing for the lead role of Mark Rogers in the West Australian production of RENT.
So I guess you gather by all of the above, I’m voting for Anthony hehehe….
Anyway check out his website:

I really like Clay, and he does an awesome job of this song, but Anthony’s rich, deep, lush voice and simple but sincere delivery, really wins it for me. I get goosebumps every time I hear it

Wow. That Anthony sure can sing! And well. This is another great Face Off. But I get chills all over when I watch Clay Aiken sing this song! From the softer notes to the big glory note- pure perfection.

Clay did a good job, but I think the arrangement was to popped up, and having the full Choir with him certainly backed him up.
But the rich timbre in Anthony’s voice just blows me away, he just stood there and delivered one of the most spine tingling performances of the season and it sealed his place in the final two. Music critics across the country applauded this performance.
They are both great contendors but Anthony is No.1

Excellent face off.
Clay has more clarity to his tome and a more pure voice, Anthony has less production and carries the song on his own. Each version has it’s plusses and no real negatives.
I noticed that Anthony has a more country twinge to his voice and is a very lightly touched nasal quality which lends to the country feel, as doesthe pronunciation of some words (no, he does not sing in the nasaly style that someone claimed existed on this year’s AI), I wonder if it is carried though on other songs.
Interestngly, Clay and Quiana performed a version of the Prayer at a benefit, a song I think of as Anthony’s much like Solitaire is Clay’s, but I don’t really think any of the recordings are very clear.
I would add Anthony to Kalan and Clay as another idol that should be promoted world wide.

This is a beautiful performance by Clay, the power of his voice is extrordinary. I love some of these faceoffs because you get to see the idols from other countries that you wouldn’t normally get a chance to listen to. Anthony has a wonderful voice and he’s a handsome guy, but this for me, is Clay’s. But i have to say this is a good match up as far as talent goes, usually Clay just sings rings around who ever he’s up against. This will be much more of a contest!

Anthony was very good.
Clays voice is magical to me. Clay is my choice for the best singer especially on this song.

Anthony is the toughest competition that Clay has faced to date, but there’s still NO CONTEST. Clay’s version wins hands down! No other singer can compare to Clay’s exquisite artistry.

Oct 26, 2007 at 7:14 am
jean, a country twinge to Anthony Callea’s voice? I don’t think so! He’s not a country and western singer although Anthony sings in a number of different genres. If there is a nasal touch to his voice, he is an Australian and therefore has an Australian accent although I personally don’t think it’s obvious. Anthony now “owns” The Prayer. I’ve heard several versions of this song now, and none of them are in the same league as Anthony’s. The Prayer still holds the record as the highest-selling, fastest-selling single ever in Australian music history. I do agree with you that Anthony, Kalan and Clay should be promoted worldwide. Singers of their calibre are certainly few and far between.

Thanks for the face-off. I hadn’t heard Anthony before, and love the sound of his voice. I’ll be checking for other songs he’s done.
The production on these Idol shows is so subjective from singer to singer, from season to season. It makes it hard to pass judgment on a specific performance as compared to another, because the volume of the back-up singers, using live music vs. taped music, even lighting & camera angles, can so easily affect one’s perceptions of the performance. And those in charge of the shows definitely know what they’re doing & how it’s going to play out on screen. SO…all that said…
When I saw/heard Clay’s version of BOTW that night in May, 2003, I couldn’t believe it was the same mellow, laid-back song that had hit and held #1 in the USA so many years earlier by its originators, Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel. It was beautiful back then, and Clay breathed fresh life into it in an amazing way. My vote has to go with Clay on this one. Others may sing it well, but he opened my heart and soul with his interpretation!

WOW! This was hard and I’m a major Clay Aiken fan!!
Anthony has an amazing voice, but it was this performance of Clays that absolutely won every bit of my heart and soul! That ending glory note sung with such power blew everyone away..and brought many to their feet.. Clays first single This is the night/ Bridge over troubled water also made history selling well over 300,000 in it’s first week debut.. beating Elton Johns Candle in the wind.. now that huge!!!!

I never liked the original of this song but I adore Anthony Callea’s version. Every song Anthony sings is a winner. The rich quality of his voice is a rarity these days. The late great Luciano Pavarotti was so impressed with Anthony’s voice that he asked if he could introduce him to Italy. Now that really is the ultimate compliment!

Well, Bev thanks for the link to Anthony singing The Prayer it was beautiful!! These 2 songs are the only ones I’ve ever heard him sing. It’s kinda funny that Anthony and Clay both came in second place when they were on Idol. Both of them are extrodinary singers, so I guess in the long run it isn’t going to hurt them any. It hasn’t hurt Clay and I’m assuming it hasn’t hurt Anthony. I have to give the edge to Clay on this one though. The ending of his version is brilliant.

WOW! Great face-off Jeanne!
Anthony does a wonderful job with this and he has a great voice! I enjoyed listening to him!
Clay as usual is brilliant in his delivery, phrasing and octave range and glory notes which he can hold in the same octave range which he can hold, on prefect pitch, for a very long time without having to go down one octave in the final few seconds of the note. (Anthony will probably get to the point were he can do this too in time)(:))
Clay has the ability to sing a song so it really is his own and his phrasing is unique, had not been duplicated by anyone and his singing touches so many emotions.
When Clay is singing, you cannot mistake his voice for anyone else’s.
My vote is for Clay on this one but Anthony is a great opponent! They both are having well deserved success.

I have to give this one to Clay. His gospel arrangement was so fresh and unexpected. He could have sung it equally well using his magnificent falsetto, as Simon and Garfunkle did originally, but the power and clarity of the gospel version is brilliant.
Anthony has a nice voice but I found myself irritated that he strayed off the melody and inserted notes into the song that are not the way it is written. It started with the first 4 notes and he continued to stray from the melody far too often to suit me.

Clay’s version, backed with the choir and orchestra is wonderful, but for pure voice alone, I award my vote to Anthony.

Wow, I had heard Anthony sing this before when someone directed me to it a long time ago. He is good and I like his voice a lot. At that time, I did not follow by listening immediately to Clay’s version again. While liking Anthony’s a lot, Clay’s still just blows me away. From the very low low notes to the super high, from the softer voice to the most power imagineable. He just totally owned this song and that studio just went totally nuts. It truly was taking a great song that many loved and showing a whole new side to it that made it new and fresh again.
That was definitely, to this day, still the most amazing performance ever on AI to me. Even though the choir added a lot, I could just as easily have totally adored it as much if it had just been Clay.

Anthony has a great voice but to me it pales in comparison to Clay’s. This song anyway, perhaps because it is the only time I have heard Anthony sing. On AI2 Clay usually had no back up whatsoever. At the very beginning of BOTW I like the way Anthony is singing it then he changes it and he loses me. Clay’s voice just reaches out and grabs my heart and soul. I must admit That Clay had my heart and soul even before I heard him sing BOTW.

WOW!! Tough choice. This is absolutely the first time I have listened to Anthony and I really really like him. The only downer for me in this is that he inserted a lot of extra notes and kinds of wavered away from the pure melody. But the guy sure can SING!! I will be looking for more music from him-he didnt look like his voice had that lower timbre.
Clay- the voice is pure- the range is wide, and the notes are clear as a bell. That last glory note gets me every time- even Randy was taken aback by the voice.
This is the closest comparison I have heard- and ANthony deserves kudo’s for his performance and voice- but I still love Clays rendition better. And the full version of the song on the CD is just mind boggling. I could listen to it over and over.
So-for this its CLay , but with Anthony a VERY close second.

Wow! Great face-off here, between two incredibly handsome young men, both with incredibly gorgeous voices.
I had never heard of Anthony and really, really enjoyed his version of BOTW. Just like with Clay, I find it difficult to believe that he came in second on his version of Idol. He has a great voice.
If I didn’t watch Clay’s version I’d think that Anthony’s was the best ever - but something in Clay’s voice just grabs me so it has to be Clay at #1 for me.

Well my vote has go to Clay 100%. Anthony sings the song well enough but there is NO WAY he can own this song…. this song belongs to Clay all the way. His voice just gives me chills everytime I hear it. It’s perfect for this song and the way he changes it and makes it his own without having to stray from the original melody is brilliant.
Like many other songs Clay has sung… it belongs to him now.

Anthony is very good. Clay is amazing. Clay can take a song and make it his own. Bridge over troubled water is one of those songs. Clay owns that song now.

I was introduced to Anthony a few months ago by a friend. The man does have a wonderful voice. I really enjoy his singing.
But, Clay, sings like no other. And, on this I have to give the win to Clay. This song belongs to Clay.
I thought Anthony sang this song well. But, it seemed in parts he was off of the music. Which was distracting, and I had trouble following. Also, very difficult to hear the words Anthony was singing.
Clay, sounds veyr clear and strong. I LOVE the range of his voice on this song. Those lower notes give me goosebumps.. and the glory note, makes my heart soar.

Anthony Callea had a no.1 hit with this song and rightly so.
I adore his rich, masculine voice but his voice is very versatile because he sings exquisite falsetto as well.
Very rarely does Anthony sing covers. He prefers to sing his own songs or songs that have been written for him. However, every cover he’s sung has always been unique and very special.
Congratulations, Anthony! You’re a superstar!

Becky, it is indeed a wonderful achievement for Clay to sell 300,000 copies of Bridge Over Troubled Water in its first week of release. Well done! However, Elton John’s Candle In The Wind tribute to the late Princess Diana sold 658,000 copies on the day it was released, and sales for the 1st week of release reached $1,550,000. It holds the record for the highest selling single in the world at $37,000,000. I also read that it was the no. 1 single in Canada for 18 months.
As far as Bridge Over Troubled Water goes, I give my vote to Anthony Callea. His version is quite unique and he has an outstanding voice.

To Horace: Anthony is so far from caberet, its not funny. Your right about one thing he does have a great career fullstop. He just finished a sellout National tour in September and yes he is trying something different and doing a couple of musical’s I hear Clay is following his lead.
Anthony has just finished starring in the critically acclaimed Opera Dead Man Walking based on the award winning movie where he had a small role. He is now currently in rehearsals for his lead role of Mark in RENT which opens in 1 week.
Early next year he starts work on his 3rd album. He’s been a busy man.
You can check out one of his performances where he recently appeared at a Marathon Telethon for the West Australian Childrens Hospital, this one is ‘What You Own’ from RENT and was before rehearsals had even begun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll2s2WdHVMw
At another charity event he performed one of the most beautiful tracks from his latest album ‘Live For Love’. He sung this simply and pure with only the accompniment off a keyboard/synth.

Clay has a lovely voice and they have a lot of parrallel’s with their careers in their respective countries. Its good to see that they are both doing so well, but my vote goes the wonderous voice of Anthony Callea.

To be fair, I listened to both, again.
Clay’s voice has that quality and tone that just gets me everytime. The lower register, shivers.

Anthony has a nice voice but I don’t like the beginning of his performance. It sounded like he didn’t know all of the words. I like Clay’s ending so much better. Clay’s version of this song is absolutely amazing from beginning to end. I’ve heard him sing this song, live–outside, competing with a thunderstorm–and that voice just transcends everything. There is no other singer even close to Clay Aiken!!!

To me, this is a matter of preference between a baritone and a tenor. Anthony’s voice is wonderful and I plan to download some of his music, for sure. But in this contest, it is Clay with the best voice, largely due to the sheer difference in range as Clay sings some baritone and thru to a high tenor. That is most rare, and makes any song he performs an unusual performance. It also shows in Solitaire and in Unchained Melody. Vote here is for Clay.

For me there is no real contest.Clay is OK but definately not in the same class as Anthony.Anthony’s absolutely incredable vocals in every song he sings is to die for. The emotion he puts into this and every song he sings gives me goosebumps makes me cry and picks me up when I am down.
Anthony is the only artist ever who I never get tired of any of his songs. They just leave me wanting more and I keep finding more things to love the more I listen to him.
To watch him preform is an incredable privledge.
He is also a beautiful man who gives so much to his fans and a wonderful role model for children and teenagers.
So for me its definately Anthony.

There is no real competition for Clay on this song, or any song, for that matter. His lower range is incredible, and he has astounding power on the glory notes.
Anthony sings fine, but Clay’s voice is one in a million, and he would be impossible to beat. He has the whole package in a nutshell, and we will be hearing from him, for as long as he wishes to remain in the business.

As I said before, I do enjoy Anthony’s voice. In fact, I have been very impressed with his voice since I was introduced to him. He sings very well. But.. where I get lost on this performance anyway, is that I don’t see ir feel any real emotion coming from Anthony. I feel like he just sings the song. Yes, he sings it very well. Some vocal gymnastics, to pretty it up. But.. I just don’t feel any passion, or really any feeling coming from Anthony. At least not during this song. Other songs, I have heard Anthony sing.. he does show more.
Clay on the other hand, when he sings this, you feel every note. Yet, he makes it look effortless. This song, really belongs to Clay. Not just in this face of, but against anyone. This performence, this version, made Bridge Over Troubled Water, forever Clay’s song.

Jo!
I think you hit the nail on the head!
That IS what makes Clay so talented vocal wise, at least that is one of the many things. There are few baritones out there that can go to the tenor level! Clay Aiken has the ability to go from baritone to tenor and back again, and from one to several octaves in one song and sometimes without even taking a breath!
He can hold a glory note longer than just about anyone in the industry without sacrificing tone or pitch!
Not only that, when he sings a song , he does it such feeling and a unique phrasing that you KNOW it is Clay Aiken singing!
WOW!

I’ve loved this song since it first came out and that’s a long time ago! Clay’s good, as always but Anthony Callea is amazing and I’ll be looking for more from him as soon as I finish this! That range and sustained power in such a simple arrangement is stunning and he made me feel every single word he sang, just as I always have in the original, where I was left distanced by Clay’s seemingly ‘happy’ version.
I see Anthony’s reached No 1 in Australia - no wonder. It gives me goosebumps! I played The Prayer as suggested - he is unbelievable. I’ll be waiting for him to be ‘exported’. Wonderful, wonderful artistry, a beautiful voice with such a variety of tones.

Anthony’s voice is the Jewel in the Crown, and has a superb range from his delicious, deep notes to his hauntingly beautiful falsetto. Every performance he’s ever given has been rock solid, and live in concert, he is something to behold.
Anthony wins this one for me.

I love Anthony’s version, but I really think he is not as pitch perfect, controlled, clear or as versatile as Clay. He sounds more sort of opera trained, Clay is more a natural singer. Very good though. No singer to my hearing is as good as Clay.

Oct 27, 2007 at 11:30 pm
May, Anthony isn’t an opera trained singer – what you hear is his natural voice. In fact, Anthony has a very versatile voice. The genres in which he sings are popera, pop, rock, r’n’b, and he loves a challenge and will readily embrace a new genre. I’m quite sure if Anthony wanted to sing opera, with a little training, he would excel in this. The late Pavarotti was so enamoured with Anthony’s voice when he sang for him that he wanted to introduce him to Italy. I think that says it all.

Wow, both are very good! But Anthony seems to be mumbling a bit too much in this song. He has a deep rich voice, yes. But he doesn’t move about with it. I don’t “feel” from it or get a sense of unique ownership to the song. This particular arrangement was Clay’s from high school and that just blew me away! He is an interpreter of music. A vocal stylist and he moves me in ways that nobody ever has. That vox is one in a million! From, gospel to rock; from pop to green eyed soul; from the standards to contemporary christian he does it all and does it better. And just as an aside….he dreamt of, developed and works hard to maintain his Bubel/Aiken Foundation (BAF) which strives for inclusion for all children with disabilities. He is an Education Embassador for UNICEF. He actively resides as an appointee on the Presidents Committee for People with Intelectual Disabilities. And just this year was presented with the Children’s Advocacy Award in NYC. Among many other charitable causes he has been involved with over the past 4 and a half years. And yes, he is taking over one of the leads in “Spamalot” on Broadway this coming January, but it’s not a big musical role. He has been offered those and turned them down. This one is more comedy and I think it will be a great deal of hard work and fun for him. A stretch if you will. In the mean time he just appeared for a benefit honoring Neil Sedaka last night at Avery Fsher hall in Lincoln Center, NYC. He sang Neil’s classic “Solitaire” and brought down the house!! It is up on you tube already and anyone who hasn’t seen this yet really needs to. Oh yea, my vote goes to Clay for this particular face-off ;)

Clay, Clay, Clay! While the original version from Paul and Art is more hunting and I love it till today, Clay’s version is triumphant.
Now to this “contest” or “face off” between Clay and Anthony. Anthony definitely has a great sounding voice and would love to hear more from him. Having said that, Clay’s version was pure brilliancy! It blew me the first time I heard it and it still does. So, my vote - Clay!!!

Sorry, more to add. Clay’s version of BOTW was sung at a higher pitch and this song has different octaves so Clay’s version was much harder to sing and his ending? Well, it pretty much blew the roof off, not to mention the judges, the audience, and of course, me.

Clay’s version, whilst good, is too commercialised for me. I love the fact that Anthony stands and delivers such a special version of this song. No back-up singers, just his gorgeous voice.
Excellent, Anthony!

I have to agree with jo. Clay’s range is what is amazing. As someone from one of the symphony orchestras has stated about Clay’s “All is well” he stretches over 21/2 octaves. A really good singer sings maybe one octave. He did the same thing on BOTW. He goes very low to very high. I haven’t seen or heard anyone do that. And Anthony is a beautiful singer and he pretty much stayed within his range which is normal. My vote again has to go to Clay.

Clay’s version is way too “jazzed” up and lacks the sincerity the song requires.
Anthony’s version is wonderful, very heart-felt and sincere, and he has a drop dead gorgeous voice.
Definitely Anthony for me.

Both fine artists, both have a great range and both have wonderfully loyal fans.I enjoyed both performances, even thought quite different, and each brings a different touch to a beautiful and touching song. In this case though, I would have to give my vote to Anthony Callea. Loved the changes he made to make it his own interpretation and found it less “gospelly” (is that a word?). A great face off. I listened to Clay’s Solitaire and Anthony’s The Prayer and they are both amazing.

Glad you checked out some of Anthony’s work May. Did you happen to check The Prayer on youtube. His performance in the Top 8 3 years ago is the one that blew the roof off the whole show and is still used as a benchmark today in our 5th series. It left “Dicko” (our very own Simon Cowell hehe) speechless. Here’s the video with Judges comments, once they could speak again and comment…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSjN7Dfsv9Y
This other performance was a year later when Anthony won an Aria Award (your equivalent to a Grammy) for highest selling artist. That Money note gets me everytime.

I think these faceoffs are really good, but its pretty clear that fans of an artist will always vote for that artist no matter what, which is fare enough and pretty normal as they have followed their careers & heard them in all their other performances and beyond. To get a completely true face off result, you would have to get people who aren’t diehards to listen to both songs and those alone independantly.
But having said that its all in good spirited fun and its lovely to get to know other artists music in different parts of the world and read people’s reviews.
I won’t list what Anthony has done in his career and charities, as I would be here forever, he is also a very humble young man. They are both very talented young men.
Good luck to both of them in their burgeoning careers and hope that the world eventually gets to hear their music.

Nobody sings as brilliantly as Anthony Callea. His voice is bellissimo!! Rich, glorious and powerful - he’s fabulous. Plus he’s very versatile.
I found Clay’s version of this song to be too “light” whereas as Anthony’s version is very powerful.
We don’t all have to like the same singers but it’s Anthony Callea all the way for me.

WOW!! Thank you, Jeanne, for searching for some worthy opponents to put up against Clay. Just makes it so interesting. I think people are going to vote with who they are fans of because that’s who grabbed them in the first place-Clay won me with this song and so I give this song to Clay. However, I just watched Anthony’s The Prayer and I’ll give that one to him, that was amazing. I can’t believe he came in second but then I couldn’t believe it when that happened to Clay either.
Other than the second place, it looks like our fandoms have much in common in that we appreciate true talent and are willing to help promote the careers of the young men who have it over the dreck that is promoted by the record labels and radio industry.
Again, thanks, Jeanne, I have discovered Kalan Porter and now Anthony Callea through your face-offs.

Whomever is commenting that Clay has backing support and therefore is sounding better - please notice that Anthony has an orchestra behind him. Let’s just watch the careers, as that takes many things into consideration - the team, the judgment, character, support and intelligence, as well as talent. See how it looks in two years. OK?

I don’t need to wait two years to know how fantastic Clay is. He is amazing. I also think Anthony is good too but have not heard too many of his songs. WOW, anthony’s fans really are umm….Over the top. It was a fascinating read over at thier messageboard.( it’s how I got here) Not such nice things said about Clay there as apposed to here. But of course everyone’s Chosen one’s are Better than everyone else. A word to the wise… Over-hyping one’s Chosen Idol is Not very endearing to many. Clay fans can attest to that. You may want to tone down the hype a bit. And what you say on the net is there for everyone to read. Clay still gets my vote, And Anthony is just…OK, not as ” warm and Rich” as Clay’s version. .

Just a note from an outsider’s perspective - I chose Anthony because I find him similar to Clay in some ways but the most important being that his fans are very similar to Clay’s. That’s not being negative or anything, but I’ve never seen fans like the Claymates until I ran into some Callea lovers.
Just a very friendly observation…

Of course people are going to be entrenched in preference for the artist they’re already a fan of. Considering the relative sizes of the countries’ populations, I think Anthony has done well - most of the comments here are so friendly and open and hopefully some new people have discovered him.
But I’d ask just a couple of things - that in future face-offs people try not to compare one artist’s entire career with one song from an unknown artist and generalise from that. Secondly I’d ask that you listen to more than one 3-year-old performance from Anthony. For range, hear The Prayer, for sweetness hear Live For Love or Per Sempre, for sustained notes, hear his version of Back At One. That’s just one main genre. Then you need to hear his jazz style, blues-influenced performances and rock or some of his impromptu a capella performances, not to mention his own co-written songs. You’re in for a treat! We hear of Clay Aiken in Australia but it’s harder for Australian artists because of our small size.
I just can’t connect with this interpretation of this song, but I’ll be back to check out future face-offs. Thanks Jeanne and thanks to all those people who listened and commented fairly with no attempts at put-downs. I know the artists themselves have lots in common and it’s made really interesting reading.

Some of the latest comments are interesting. I don’t believe that Anthony’s fans are hypo - absolutely devoted yes, but not OTT hypo. Furthermore, his fans rarely criticise another artist. Of course, Anthony’s fans aren’t perfect but Anthony does not condone that behaviour at all. In fact, he is completely opposed to it. I have come across some of Clay’s fans online in the past who have been very nasty indeed about other artists which only serves to encourage ill-feeling towards him and his fans, which is very sad.
I agree that a biographical warfare shouldn’t be encouraged - one-upmanship, so to speak. If anything, it only causes more ill-feeling.
I am a huge supporter of Anthony Callea and his music, and to me, he has the finest voice I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing, and I’m no spring chicken. I think he’s been blessed with an exceptional gift. I understand that Clay’s fans don’t/won’t agree with this but let’s face it, Anthony’s fans and Clay’s fans are never going to agree, and arguing about it is not going to achieve anything! However, it will no doubt continue because that’s human nature. In the meantime, I’ll be supporting my guy to the max. Let’s just hope we can keep this face-off as friendly as possible.

Both great artists so its a very worthy faceoff and obviously both have strong loyal fanbases, but my vote goes to the wonderful voice of Anthony Callea love his rich tones.
Its great to see that they are both doing so well in their respective countries, but need to be marketed worldwide. We have never seen or heard any of Clays music in Australia, and I’m sure the same goes for Anthony in the US. I know you can import music, but they should be available through the normal outlets, and don’t understand why as they are obviously both big sellers.

I am not American and have watched all Idols shows, and only one singer has ever done it for me. Clay. He is in a league all of his own. Anthony is my second favorite, he is very talented, but nobody comes close to Clay. When you listen to loads of songs, you have to, to get a good feel, the others are good on some, and not on others. Clay sings everything pitch perfectly, and has more power over his entire range. He is also very original and unique.

Well, deffinitly from an outsider perspective here. Be nice to me. I’ve never seen any of these singing competition shows… from anywhere. Always thought they were kinda cheesy and I still think they are. Still I was at work and I was bored and I came upon this so I figured what the heck. After skimming through the comments though I gotta admit someone you almost scared me away. But I’m here to stay and offer my opinion, for the little that it’s worth…
First I will rate Anthony’s performance. Top Notch! Very well done!! He sang it like a real pro! He has a great sounding voice and he can sing! Yes I know right… he CAN sing!!! I would deffinitly give the tv show kudos for finding such a talented man. HOWEVER… I wasn’ crazy about the arrangement of the song… is it just me or does he go off melody? He could have sung a little more clearly, sometimes it sounded like he had mush in his mouth. But there is NO DOUBT the boy can sing.
Next Clay,
I was surprised by his arrangement of the song, deffinitly something new, lucky for him this something new was a good thing. He breathed new life into the song. It amazed me to hear that voice come out of that man. I think this guy can really sing! I really appreciated the crystal clear quality to his voice and thought the way he ended his notes was distanct and his own. But the back singing was bit much at times, and not needed.
With that being said I don’t know how you all choose a favorite so quickly (just assuming by the comments).
I think the deciding factor for me is going to have to be the finale note both singers sung. While Anthonys was good… Clay blew me out of the water. He sang the note with such timing, power, rang and conviction it was amazing. What a way to end that song! A surprise that was wrapped in gorgeous paper and delivered with confidence and ease. I rarely ever get chills from listening to a song… but Clay has done it for me. Once he erupted in that note the chills took over. For me that being the deciding factor Mr. Clay Aiken had to win this one. (even if he is a funny lookin guy).

BOTW was sung by Clay during the finale. I don’t know why but for some reason, there has always been a choir for every American Idol finale.
However, take the choir away and I will still vote for Clay because like Paula (one of the judges) said, Clay took an old song and made it feel like we were hearing it for the first time. The arrangements (just Clay’s parts) were superb!!!
And Aiken’s glory note at the end had such power, the pitch of that note was high (so high that Randy, another one of the judges said), “Man, I didn’t even know you could hit that note!” and he held it for so long.
I am not an American and we have our own idol show in my country but Clay is my idol because that boy can take any song and own it! And I just love his voice!
That said, Anthony is a very worthy contestant for this face-off.

I have listened to about 20 Anthony`s songs and love his voice, he is very versatile. I will definitely listen and look out for him. I am a Clay fan, so I really like to listen to all singers I can find. I listened to Anthony`s I Want To Know What Love Is and The Christmas Song among many others, and although good, they just do not come close to Clay`s voice. Clay is much stronger over his entire range, his diction is perfect and he is spot on pitch. The world has place for all the good singer`s but Clay is No 1. He really is unique.

Treenuts…….. I agree with you, I actually forgot to mention you (Previous post). I don`t get the impression that Anthony`s fans have listened to any other songs by Clay either. You really cant just judge any singer on one song. I think Clay was very nervous on that particular BOTW, He has done it better. Having said that I still prefer it to Anthony`s, I really like Anthony and think he is going to do really well. He is very talented and some of his notes are brilliant, the trouble is they are not all brilliant. He could improve though. .

In response to Jo and treenuts’ comments, Anthony Callea’s fans are extremely devoted and loyal. If you are reading that as OTT then you are seeing something that isn’t there. Most artists have very dedicated and loyal fans – it goes with the territory.
I have known about Clay Aiken for a few years now and have listened to his music via youtube. There are other fans of Anthony’s who are aware of Clay’s music as well. My favourite song of his is Unchained Melody.
I think Clay has a great voice but it’s the rich, powerful quality of Anthony’s voice that makes him my no. 1 singer. He is also a very versatile vocalist as evidenced by the songs he has recorded. It’s not only Anthony’s singing that his fans find endearing. He is a genuinely nice guy with a very kind and caring heart.
However, this face-off is about 2 performances of Bridge Over Troubled Water and my vote goes to Anthony. I prefer his interpretation of the song, and it is a rock solid, uncomplicated and beautiful performance.

Both are extremely talented and very worthy opponents.
Clay has a wonderful range, and his low notes are really gorgeous, but I find his higher range a little bit nasally, and at times irritating (sorry, I am not trying to be nasty, just genuinely honest). I do think he is extremely good though, and I have watched a number of his performances on YouTube and I really really like him. His version of Solitaire is truly wonderful, and he definitely deserves all the success and adoration he has been receiving. I plan on downloading some of his work, and no doubt, will be listening to him a whole lot more now.
Anthony, for me, has a much warmer, fuller, richer tone to his voice, and he also has an amazing range, although it is not shown fully in this particular song. I have followed Anthony from his first Idol performance believe he is extremely versatile, has an exquisite voice and an amazingly warm and lovable personality, and very deserving of great great success and adoration. His version of The Prayer, in my humble opinion, is second to none, and is truly and worldwide smash hit, just waiting to happen!
As far as this particular face off goes, my vote goes to Anthony, as, although I loved both performances, Anthony’s heartfelt, simple yet sincere version, with his exquisite low tones and beautiful warm yet soaring finish, wins it for me hands down.

Loved both performances. I think both should have won their respective “idols”. Just out of interest, who actually beat Clay and what year was he involved in IDOL?
My vote goes to Anthony on this occaission.

Hey Heather. A lovely young man by the name of Ruben Studdard. He had a great voice too, we called him ‘the velvet teddy bear’ A big man, towered over everyone and sang his heart out. He and Clay became very good friends and still are. That was 2003. I’ll try and find a youtube link so you can see him.

You know it’s one thing to post something nice( or not so nice) but flooding a blog with supportive posts by changing your name to say it again…….Anthony fans are as bad as Clay fans.
