Idol Face Off - Jordin Sparks vs. Melissa O’Neil
When researching for this week’s Idol Face Off, I discovered a really interesting factoid: Melissa O’Neil, the season 3 winner of Canadian Idol and Jordin Sparks, the current American Idol champ both sang two unusual songs.
Why are they unusual? Well, like I said - I’ve been researching and, so far, no other contestant has sang either of them. It’s so weird that two winners would sing the same two “rare” songs. Especially since Simon and much of the American media commented on how “old fashioned” and “unique” Jordin’s song choices were. Turns out, they weren’t so unique… :)
What two songs did they sing? “A Broken Wing” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Weird, huh? Anyway, here’s today’s face off:

*Update! I found video of Diana DeGarmo and Jessica Sierra singing “A Broken Wing” (nothing else for “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” though).

Actually, Diana DeGarmo also sang “Broken Wing” during Country Week of AI3…though her version was by far the weakest of the three.
I voted for Melissa here - I think she captured the emotion of the song better and more naturally. That was always my problem with Jordin: technically pretty good, but empty. Her emotion seemed forced and fake. Like Melissa sang the song to tell a story, whereas Jordan sang the song to show off how well she could sing.

jordin is amazing! this song was one of her best in my opinion. (also “this is my now” and “i who have nothing”) the story behind this song for her is touching. jordin - you’re amazing! can’t wait for tattoo to come out on itunes! iLOVEjordinSPARKS!!!

They both did a great job but Melissa’s version got off to a rocky start…could hardly hear her. Jordin’s voice is absolutely beautiful and powerful from beginning to end. No wonder she won American Idol!!!

xfactor’s Ray sang Youll Never Walk Alone as did Ruben, KellyC and Fantasia during the Christmas show sometime back. The Idol Winners’ performance is still the BEST!!

Jordin all the way!!! She’s been singing that song ever since she was younger. She said on tour that whenever she sang that song, Her grandpa would time how long she carried the last note. And she dedicates that song to him because he past away.

Yes, he passed away. But he’s still up there listening. And he no doubt is pleased with the emotional content of Jordin’s singing style. Possibly a robot wouldn’t notice it but the rest of us sure did.

Melissa’s higher register is much more pleasant than Jordin’s. However, Jordin’s lower register is much more pleasant than Melissa’s. :)
I give the edge to Melissa - I prefer her tone to Jordin’s. But, both women sang the hell out of that song.

I think they both sang it well but, I give the edge to Jordin. Her voice is more powerful. She really sings this well.

No wonder both young ladies won! That was incredible by both however, Jordin with her falsettos and emotion (for those of you who found her emotionless & unbelievable) she sang this song for her grandpa when she was younger and can’t listen to her sing it without tearing up, and wishing her grandfather was here to see it. I know he heard her in heaven, I would have just liked to have witnessed his face.

Melissa and Jordin were great but Jordin, most definately, had the most powerful voice. Yes…Jordin won this faceoff hands down!!!

This was a tough one, it was like comparing Ruben and Clay. One has the silky smooth style and the other one has the power pipes. You know me I always go for the power. Have to give it to Jordin. Both are beautiful singers.
