Idol Face Off - Over the Rainbow

by Jeanne on September 5th, 2007

Today’s Idol Face Off includes two American Idols, a Malaysian Idol and a Phillipines Idol contestant. I also included the winner from the “cousin” of the Idol shows, “X Factor.” I included it since it’s also a Simon Cowell show.

So, today’s contestants are: Kimberley Locke (American Idol), Katharine McPhee (American Idol) and Leona Lewis (X Factor), Jaclyn Victor (Malaysian Idol) and Kyla (Phillipines Idol).

The Malaysian Idol and Phillipines Idol will surprise you. The video quality is crap but who cares as long as you can hear.

By the way, have a good laugh when watching Leora because, when her voting numbers pop up, it’s Simon’s face on the banner, lol! Talk about vanity :)

Kimberley Locke (Yes, Kim’s version is shorter but you get the gist of it)

Katharine McPhee

Leona Lewis

Jaclyn Victor

Kyla

Kimberly - Good voice, impressive with only thepiano.

Kat McPhee - I’ve always hated her interpretation of that song. It came out as totally fake to me. Also, she has an ear piece when she sings a capella - idols are NOT suppose to have them. So that takes away a LOT from this performance for me.

Leona - Very impressive. What a voice! But I didn’t like the extra slow rendition she did.

Jaclyn Victor - refreshing arrangement! Especially after listening to a song for the fourth time in a row. *L* She sings well.

Kyla - Too bad the sound is not great…

So, who wins…. Leona Lewis maybe? I don’t really know!

I’ve gotta say that I liked Jaclyn Victor the best even though I had never heard of her before. I thought it was modern and, like you said, refreshing!

Jaclyn did the best job in my opinion. She really did make it sound new and modern. And what a voice! I could tell you that that is the only one of the given versions that I would buy.

    yay! Jaclyn gets discovered!!
katherine’s is the most honest and touching, but i’d buy jaclyn’s over hers if they were on sale.

No contest… Leona… the only one of the bunch for whom the song cuts like a knife. Simon says it all, in the full clip, “the single best performance I have ever witnessed”. Clive Davis seems to agree too. Which out of the 5 of them has the $9.6m contract now?

KATHERNE’S IS IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN !
SHE MAKES IT HER OWN WHILE BEING TRUE TO THE SONGWRITER. THE OTHERS ARE JUST TRYING TO FIND A HOOK

Katharine McPhee is absolutely brilliant in this performance. Everyone else tries to do their own thing with it, but it just doesn’t work. Katharine’s voice and rendition made me so happy to be able to listen and watch it. Absolutely perfect. I could go on for a long time, but I’ll stop there.

Katharine Mcphee is the best. The girl has natural talent, she is born to sing. All the other girls have their own gift too, but as far as Somewhere Over The Rainbow is concerned, it is KATHARINE MCPHEE’S version that touched the hearts of millions on this modern world. That night as she sang it for the 1st time at AI.was the beginning of her journey towards stardom. She will become a legend either in the music business or films.

I liked Jaclyn very much and I’m not a Katharine fan but hers was the most beautiful and truest version of the song.

LOL, an obvious Kat hater or two loves to comment on these things, I see :p No matter…Kat’s is the best, just like everything else she sings. I know that most Kat fans consider this her best song, or performance…I liked it, but enjoy I Have Nothing better :)

Leona makes McFlea sound like a strangled cat, she is not even in the same league as Leona ‘Whitney Mariah Celine’ Lewis

Leona’s is gorgeous, but it’s almost exactly like the version done by the late Eva Cassidy. Listen to Cassidy’s CD, called Songbird. RIP, Eva.

This was a tough one for me, with no “hands down” winner.

Kimberely - I didn’t like this clip that much, but on her CD I love the way she does it.

Kat - hated it on the show, it sounded so phoney for some reason. It sounded much better today - especially on the higher notes. The beginning with the low notes wasn’t very good but part way into the song it got a lot better.

Leona - never heard her before. She was good and has a great voice. The Simon face cracked me up.

Jaclyn - never heard her before either. LOVED the music in this arrangement. It was a more modern, jazzier sounding arrangement and she did quite well.

Kyla - Also new to me. It’s too bad the sound quality was so bad because it sounds like she had a lovely voice but I got bored listening.

So my favorite? Hmmmmm…………… based on these alone, I’m going for Jaclyn. But I still love Kimberelys version on her CD

I listened to them all once, then went back & listened again… Katharine’s was the best, hands down. Leona’s also was v.good, but while she has an excellent voice, she just changed the song too much for my tastes. Some songs are best if they’re just sung cleanly, purely, and beautifully, and Katharine did it with all those factors & a little bit more besides. Sorry, but for my money, Katharine’s was easily the best!
