Idol Really Gave Back!

Well, the early numbers are in and so far, American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” episodes raised $60 million dollars for charity!!! According to sources, along with the money sponsors chipped in for every vote cast on Tuesday night, Fox donated $5 million, Ryan Seacrest’s co-host Ellen DeGeneres said she would contribute $100,000 and a spokesman for Simon Cowell said he had made a “significant six figure donation.” That is fantastic!

It struck me as a pompous bit of self-promotion for a franchise that has returned a fraction of what it has taken in - or nothing, if you ask me.
What they gave back isn’t even a third of their ad revenue from one show. Meanwhile, they are in their sixth season of stealing money from viewers, phone voters, advertisers and the general public.
And, what a shocker … no one was eliminated, which means that all the votes were for naught, since they get to milk this nonsense for another week of prime-time advertising revenue.

Well, I definitely value realistic posts like yours, here. I think a lot of people feel the way you do. My theory is that they could actually just continue giving nothing away. At the very least, this is something.
I’ll tell you, though, I was really impressed during the tsunami crisis when Sandra Bullock forked out $1 million. I don’t think other celebs gave that much and she’s not exactly the highest paid or busiest actress in Hollywood.

It bothers me that they raised that much money, and only a portion of it will go to charity. That is what is seriously messed up about this whole thing, in my opinion.

If you don’t like the show, you wouldn’t be for the event. I actually feel that the thought behind the event was great. Every little bit helps and lord knows that these kids need every bit they can get.

Vicki, it has nothing to do with whether or not you like the show; the point is, that they did not deliver what they said they would. Only a portion of the proceeds going to charity is inexcusable.
If they really wanted to do the level of good that is necessary, they would give a hell of a lot more than they gave. The “every little bit helps” mentality is the same as watching someone die in the streets and being like, “well, I gave him a dollar, and he didn’t use it properly”. If that helps you sleep at night, fine, but for the rest of us that were appalled at this charade; it doesn’t cut it.

I am trying to think of the song they played in the background with the video where Simon and Ryan were in Africa with the kids. I remember the song being by a man but I cant remember it . Can anyone name some songs from that night please

Sandy - I’ve been trying to figure it out but the only thing I can think of is John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change.” Could that be it?
