Katharine McPhee Sings For The Bee Gees

May 18, 2007 by Jeanne

Katharine McPhee BMI AwardsAt this year’s BMI Awards, the Bee Gees were honored for writing that huge number of songs throughout the years. In a recent interview with Spinner, Barry Gibb actually said – “This is the one award that we would’ve wanted more than any.”

Barry and brother Robin (their brother, Maurice, has passed away) were serenaded with renditions of some of their best-known songs by several artists, including American Idol runner-up, Katharine McPhee.

Katharine, who sang “Immortality,” gushed to Spinner about what it meant to be there that night. She said “I’m seeing all these people I know that I didn’t think were going to be here, and I’m like, ‘Oh, s***, this is a big industry thing.’” Uhh… duh!

Anyways, when acted about her earliest Bee Gee memory, Kat said -”Basically just driving in the car with my dad. My dad would take us to school every morning, and if the Beatles were on or the Bee Gees were on, he’d be like, ‘Who’s on right now?’ He’d always test us, make sure we knew the icons.”

Please everyone read this with an open mind. I found this info on another site “beyonce K. Remember what I had been saying about the Bee Gee songs , and how hrd it was to make them sound good when its only one peron, well this was sadi by the writers. The Bee Gees were recently honored for their songwriting acheivements at the BMI Awards. The two living Gibb brothers, Barry and Robin, were serenaded by artists singing some of their most famous songs.

When asked later about the various covers other artists have done on their music, they did say that one stood out. Robin said “We’ve had Beyoncé do our music, ‘Emotion,’ and [Barbra] Streisand, ‘Woman in Love. It’s very difficult to know what artist, because they’ll do a totally different take than actually the way we wrote it. But it’s always interesting. I think ‘Emotion,’ by Destiny’s Child, is probably my favorite.”

I also think that Bee Gees songs are best sung by groups unless, of course, you have some amazing back-up singers. Otherwise, the song falls flat and totally does a disservice to the Gibb brothers.
