Kelly Clarkson Sings "Ave Maria" For Pope

April 19, 2008 by Jeanne

American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, sang “Ave Maria” for Pope Benedict XVI at a youth rally at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers.

Can you imagine doing that?  I would be absolutely terrified.  Here’s the video:

I’ve always be a big fan of Kelly Clarkson.

    That was beautifully done!

I am not Catholic but I can imagine that must have been a thrilling moment for her which she will always cherish!

    Bravo Kelly!

    :)

OHH! *claps* Oh, Kelly good job! Bravo! Bravo! Muy fantastico! Super duper magnifico!! Yabba dabba doo! Now, to top it off maybe the Pope can be a guest judge on American Idol this week! Woo hoo! Oh this stuff is making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and giving me hope. Read this article about American Idol, young stars, and hope for the future and you will see exactly what I am talking about:

She insisted on singing Ave Maria for the Pope? Well, I think she did very well and I, too, would have been terrified – beyond. But I didn’t hear nerves in her voice. Way to go, Kelly.

I heard that as well. She was actually asked to sing for him, but leave it to the media to put their own spin on it.

I am not a fan of Kelly Clarkson’s recordings but I always thought she had the potential to do some great things with her voice when she sang “straight” with out the yelling and boring R&B trilling. Her performance of the Catholic classic, the Ave Maria, surprised me. Although it was much too fast and her phrasing and Latin were abysmal I think she gave the hymn a very reverential treatment. Over the years the world’s greatest operatic and pop vocalists have performed and recorded the classic hymn to the Mother Of God whom Catholics have a special reverance: Mario Lanza, Lucianno Pavarotti, Andreas Bocelli, Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Charlotte Church, to name just a few. Clarkson did a credible job. I hope she continues in this more classic vocal style vein.

I was very very disapointed at the “performance”. Its not a pop song. I was embarassed as well. She should not have been the one to sing it. Also she was very disrespectful in her greeting to Pope Benedict. Her clothing was also wrong. What a shame.
