Kristy Lee Cook National Anthem and Tanya Tucker Support

March 16, 2008 by Jeanne

American Idol hopeful, Kristy Lee Cook, sang the national anthem prior to a Dallas Mavericks basketball game on March 19, 2004.  What do you think?  She sounds good to me but she had a couple little pitchy parts.

Also, TMZ sent me this story about Kristy’s connection to country singing legend, Tanya Tucker.  TMZ says that Kristy Lee’s former manager, Marty Rendleman, told them that Tucker called Cook a couple nights ago to give her some advice!  She told Kristy “that she was pretty, had a great voice and to just go out there and be herself!”

This isn’t Kristy Lee’s first encounter with Tanya Tucker!  Apparently, when Kristy was 16, she called Marty for help getting tickets to see Tucker at an Oregon country fair but he managed to get Kristy on stage to sing a couple songs and she and her whole family got to hang out backstage!   What a good manager!

I thought it sounded great. Listening to the clip on itunes I was struck by how she has a great voice to take on a Karen Carpenter song. She has that same beautify creamy quality to her voice. I think it might be a hard song to take on as she will not be able to just imitate but will need to make it her own but I think she has the right tone for the melodies. However, I can just hear the judges saying don’t try to do too much with a perfect song, just sing it.
