Mark Day Leaves Canadian Idol

This week’s results show from the Top 7 led us to say goodbye to Mark Day. The bottom three included Mark, Theo Tams, and Earl Stevenson. The previous night, with the theme being “UK Hits”, Mark had performed a rendition of the Leona Lewis hit “Bleeding Love” but didn’t receive enough votes to stay in the competition.
Before the announcement, Ben Mulroney had asked judge Jake Gold if the bottom three knew who they were as performers, and Jake said he felt that both Theo and Earl did, but that Mark still seemed to be finding himself.
Ben gave Mark a little pep talk by saying:
“This whole competition has been about your talent but I just want to talk to you just for a second about the person that I know from backstage. You are a gentleman, you’re a wonderful person to be around and I know I’m giving voice to a lot of the people who worked on this show who are going to be counting the days until the finale when we get to enjoy your company again. You’re a true gentleman, a wonderful person and you will most definitely be missed.”
I have to say that Mark was a class act though. While he looked sad to be leaving, he said that he was in awe of the talent of the remaining contestants and that it was not an insult to be going home. He also urged Canada to continue voting for them:
“I want to thank everyone who voted for me for sure,” said Mark. “It’s definitely been a pleasure to be here. I’m definitely in awe of everyone who’s left here. It’s definitely not an insult to go home. Everyone here deserves your votes so Canada keep voting. I consider it a compliment to have been in their company, I learned a lot from them. I want to thank the judges both for their honesty and their support and I want to thank you guys for standing up.”
Before the results were announced, Tom Jones performed his classic “It’s Not Unusual” and his newest song, “If He Should Ever Leave You”, shaking his hips and showing that you’re never too old to gyrate a little on stage.
