Melinda Doolittle to Host “Christmas at Belmont”

I couldn’t be happier for Melinda Doolittle! It’s good to know that not all American Idol alumni end up opening malls… I read this on the Tennessean website:
Former American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle will host Christmas at Belmont, airing nationally on PBS on Christmas Eve.
For the first time, the show, which will tape Nov. 19, will be held off-campus. The Schermerhorn Symphony Center event will feature more than 400 student voices as well as members of the School of Music faculty and the Nashville Children’s Choir. Past hosts have included Josh Turner and Brenda Lee.
“Hosting Christmas at Belmont was the icing on the cake for the year for me just because Belmont has been such an influence on where I am right now, what I did before American Idol,” says Melinda, a 1999 Belmont grad.
“I’ve watched other people do it, and I can’t believe I get to do it at this point. It’s just an honor. As soon as they asked, I was like, ‘Sure. Are you sure you want me to talk? I can sing. I’ll sing, but I don’t know about the talking part.’ But I am warming up to it.”
Melinda will spend much of the fall traveling, including a stint on the Michael W. Smith Christmas tour. But when she’s home in Nashville, she’ll be writing and recording songs for her upcoming pop album. She hasn’t yet chosen a label. “It will be a mainstream album just about life stories. I am not leaving God out of it at all because God is a big part of my life story.”
She’s happy being single at this point in her life.
“I don’t really have a lot of time to actually date,” she says. “I’ve talked to some of my friends and they say, ‘It’s weird trying to figure out why people want to talk to you at this point.’ I haven’t figured out that part, but I know God has the right man out there for me, so I’m like, OK, when he comes, I’ll know what’s going on and I’ll be ready for it.”
She was delighted to be named the best role model by a reader in Thursday’s column.
“Possibly one of the biggest things about this whole adventure has just been learning how to be comfortable in my own skin, and it doesn’t happen all the time. I am a firm believer that God made me this way and this is how I’m supposed to be. I am working on being fit. Women with curves, I love curves.”
NPT will air Christmas at Belmont at 8 p.m.on Dec. 20, and it airs nationally at 9 p.m. Dec. 24. Unfortunately, there will be no seats available to the general public for the taping.
