Randy Jackson Responds to Chris Daughtry
Chris Daughtry recently voiced his opinions about American Idol when he reportedly told Rolling Stone that the show "lacked credibility" and was in a "state of decline." For what it’s worth, Chris has since put up a statement in his blog explaining the situation.
Still, American Idol judge, Randy Jackson, had a few comment of his own for Rolling Stone. Here’s what he said:
“I love Chris. I think he made an amazing record that he sold extremely well,” Jackson said. “He’s a testament to the fact that no matter where you finish on Idol—even if you finish twelfth—if you make a great record and you got that kind of exposure, the public will resoundingly buy it. But the bottom line is there would be no Chris Daughtry if there wasn’t American Idol.”
He went on to say that American Idol is still a great opportunity for young singers trying to break in to the business:
“I did A&R at record companies for fifteen years. No company was out looking for these kids. I’m sure you can ask any of the winners or the runners-up: were you trying to get a record deal before American Idol? I’m sure they will all say ‘Yes.’ Were you successful? I’m sure they’ll all say ‘No.’ So now we’ve got all these people, and guess what brought them here? The quickest rocket ship to the top.”
I agree with both Chris and Randy so it’s a toss up for me. Who do you agree with?

I think that Chris wasn’t trying to Diss the show. He was asked a question and gave an honest answer. Chris is not the only one who felt that the show was losing it’s credibility. I was on the Idol boards last year and everyone was talking about how they were not going to watch anymore because it was getting boring. There was also a lack of talent last year compared to the previous years. There was also a significant amount of drama which is not necessary. The show is supposed to be about finding the best. Another thing is that people are fed up with the voting process. It becomes a voting contest, not a singing contest. I don’t think anything Chris said was wrong.

Yes I have an opinion about Chris and it is not a good one. I have heard and read a couple diss’s he has made about another former Idol Star and I think that Chris is somewhat of a big head and not too nice. Remember that this is my opinion, and I’m sticking to it. Also Chris would not be known if not for AI.

The facts are the show has failed to produce a break-out star in it’s winner/runner-up for the past two seasons. Taylor and Kat were let go by their labels after one CD and Jordin had the lowest debut total for a winner to date. The first two shows this season posted some of their lowest numbers in years. Was Chris honest when he answered “yes” to the question “is AI lacking some credibility at this point?”… you bet!

Chris has already said before that
1) the show was cheesy, he really wanted to get on Rock!Star! - he tried out and did not make the cut. I agree he it would have been more interesting to see him on there - wrting his own music and palying instruments.
2) He does not have respect for people who do not play thier own instruments - Chris - the voice IS an instrument
3)In this quote he seemed to dismiss the seasons both before and after him.Iguess only his season had credibility.
4) he claimed he was misquoted, then Rolling stone posted an unedited tape exerpt transcript of the conversation and - no, Rolling Stone did not bring up this, Chris did. I.e. blame everyone, don’t take responsibility for your remarks must be part of credibility as he describes it.
I guess Chris feels there is only one type of music. I never saw opera sigers playinstruments or, actually a lot ovocal artists. he needs to expand his world. AI does lack credibility in the music world mostly because of narrow minded thinking like Chris displays. The problem he has is that this show put him on the map and now he wants to use the springboard and but a “Kewl kid” who doesn’t watch the show. He is basically assuming his fans are not fans of AI, they are too kewl.
I am not kewl.

Jean, I so agree with you that the voice is an instrument also. If you can sing and bring chills and pleasure to people you do not need an instrument also. I feel that Chris does not have respect for others and is too full of himself. I seen that in him right from the start and it turned me off big time. It never hurts to have a little humility.

I am a big fan of Jennifer Hudson. When Jennifer forgot to mention American Idol when she won her oscar, they tried to destroy her. Not that she did not mention them before she won. Almost every article or television show she did she mentioned American Idol. The moment she forgot because of the excitement, they tried to say she was anti American Idol and that is further from the truth. Now that Chris says something they are all for him. Its OK Jennifer God is taking you where you were destined to go. This time next year you will be the best thing that came out of American Idol. This is Gods doing not American Idol. As I said before, what God has blessed no man can curse. DS

I think both Chris and Randy were right. I mean, yeah, let’s face it: some of Idols contestants have not done as well as was hoped. Some actually doing pretty badly. However, it’s obviously done wonders for some contestants. It’s a situation where both parties have their reasons to defend their side. If Idol doesn’t improve, then Chris will be right in saying that it’s in a state of decline.

I don’t know, I’m a big fan of Chris, absolutely love him. I just hate when stuff like this gets put out there, he has said similar statements before like this and he just needs to remember that AI is where he got his start & fans. He isn’t doing himself or AI a favor by dissing the show. His start came from the show, he isn’t as big as AI. I agree, Idol hasn’t been at it’s best and there are things about it I don’t like, like voting an it becoming more of a popularity contest than talent. At the same time, there are a lot of good singers that come out of the show and the good ones do weigh out the bad. AI is a great starting place for people seriously wanting to make it in the business, there are so many artists out there who have said they would’ve jumped at the chance to start at AI when they first started. I can see some of what Chris is saying, but I totally agree with Randy. Bottom line is the singers have to remember that AI is where they got their start and fans from. It’s one of those don’t bite the hand that feeds you situations.
