American Idol winner Ruben Studdard has reportedly shed almost 100 pounds for his upcoming stage role.  Ironically enough, he lost the weight to portray Fats Domino in the musical “Ain’t Misbehavin‘” (come on, the irony of losing weight to be “Fats” is a little humorous, right?).

He said, “I am working out now. I’ve started jogging last week, really just trying to build up my endurance because we’re doing about eight shows a week… I have lost almost 100 pounds. A year and a half ago I weighed about 450 pounds, now I weigh 365. I still have a long way to go, I need to gear back up again.”

I think it’s absolutely amazing and I’m really happy for Ruben.

I saw Ruben on an ET interview about his weight loss, but also saw another more detailed interview on a news station. The weight loss has been going on for well over a year and was done for his health, not the theater role, as had been reported by ET. The play is an opportunity he received because he has been working on building his stamina. He is working toward more and more lasting health with his vegetarian diet. Would that I had his persistance. He participated in a Duke weightloss program to learn how to change the way he looked at food and how to coook healthy for himself. Quite a change from requiring fried chicken in the dressing room.

Having seen the revival of this play awhile ago, I believe he is playing the Fats Waller role, not the Fats Domino role.

He has a lots of fingers in the pot to keep him busy right now, besides his new album being recorded for a release this year, he has his foundation growing strong and expects to have another fund raising gala concert for it this year. Last year, Kim Locke came to perform at his gala. Rubes also volunteers for many other charities.

It will be interestingto see how his new album comes out. Unlike many other idols and many of the idol fans, he appreciates his connection with 19 and Simon Fuller and their support.

  2. Wow, that is truly amazing! Good for him! I think it’s great that he started working out. It’s important to stay in shape.

But no matter how thin he gets he’s still gonna be American I dol’s teddy bear!
