Simon Cowell Talks American Idol and Charity on Oprah

by Jeanne on March 18th, 2008

Simon Cowell on OprahSimon Cowell was on Oprah yesterday and it was pretty funny to hear him describe his relationship with Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest (he said Ryan is like a mosquito that you want to swat).  Oprah said that she thinks Simon has gotten more likeable but has always like Simon because he says what people want to say.  To his credit, he says that he just tries to give people good advice.

Later, Simon allowed Oprah’s cameras to follow him behind-the-scenes on American Idol.  They went to Ryan’s dressing room which was considerably smaller than Simon’s.  Hilarious!

Simon made me cry at one point because there was a family who were struggling to pay for their home since their 3-year-old daughter became very sick.  Simon personally paid for their $162,000 mortgage (he barely got a hug, by the way.  I’m sure they are grateful but it didn’t look it…).

That was so sweet of Simon. I would hate to think that the family was unappreciative of Simon. Maybe they were just so overwhelmed that they couldn’t smile and be happy…I don’t know but geez. You would think most people would be grateful no matter who it came from oprah or Simon. Still he did a great thing :)

You can’t know what a person is feeling in a moment that is so overwhelmin - you should not judge the way the family reacted. I had a very sick daughter and you just don’t know how those feelings are going to come out. That father reminded me of my husband - present a calm exterior while being ripped apart inside and wanting not to breakdown infront of so many people.
