Idol Stalker

Stop the Schtick

by Jason on May 5th, 2006

The one thing every week that irritates me more than anything is the constant stabs and jabs at Simon and his comments. I was talking to a friend recently about this and was reminded that the target audience probably loves this stuff. That makes sense I guess, it’s just irritating.

Now there have been times where Simon’s opinions have been seemingly way off, on both sides. There have been times where I’ve though the contestants did great and he’s trashed their performance, and times when I thought it was horrible and he loved it. The key here is that he’s a professional, does this for a living and obviously knows what he’s talking about.

More so than any other judge, I believe Simon’s comments also provide more constructive feedback. We can always rely on Paula to mention wardrobe, appearance and the emotional connection to the audience. Then there’s Randy with the “hot one tonight”, “go dog!”, “you pulled it out” comments.

I’m really curious as to if all the stabs back and forth are scripted or at least encouraged by everyone for the “drama”, or if it’s really spiteful. If it’s the latter, it surprises me that any of the judges would agree to or be invited back for subsequent seasons. What do you think?

I’ve been a fan of Simon’s from the beginning. People get mad at him, but any kind of entertainment industry is rather cutthroat from everything I’ve ever read. If someone is too thin-skinned to handle Simon’s comments, they won’t make it in show-biz.

Someone once made a nasty retort that Paula was nothing more than a has-been singer, and when she gives critiques that are little more than a wardrobe review, I have to wonder. Is she qualified to be a judge? Or is that her way of “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything”?

Eh, I have a feeling it’s all distorted for the tv audience. Me, I watch it to hear the singers. (and I was the auditions for the amusement factor.)
