Part 1 of the Canadian Idol auditions were last night and I wanted to live-blog but we had the most massive storm here in Calgary and we lost power. So… there really were not a huge number of really, really good contestants but there were certainly a few that made me sit up and pay attention. One guy, Tyler Mullendore was so awesome that I couldn’t believe he wasn’t already a star. He just had it all, for me.

Darn weather storm! It stopped my PVR from recording everything so I am so sorry that this post is terribly incomplete.

There have been changes to this new season. The first change is the most interesting. This year, contestants will be allowed to audition and perform using instruments. The judges feel it will give them a better idea of what the contestants will sound like with music. Australian Idol has the same rules.

The other change is that the new “roving host” to accompany Ben Mulroney will be comedian, Dave Kerr.

Here’s the schedule:

• Tuesday, June 5 – 90 minutes of auditions! (Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, St. John’s and Halifax)
• Tuesday, June 12 with 90 minutes of auditions! (Saskatoon, Montreal, Vancouver and London)
• Top 200 episodes air Monday, June 18 and Tuesday, June 19
• Top 22 performances air Mondays/Tuesdays beginning June 25
• Top 22 results air Wednesdays beginning June 27
• Top 10 week one airs Tuesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 18
• Shows move to regular Monday/Tuesday timeslot on July 23

Bryan Kyrish starts us off in San Antonio with Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell”. This guy is intense, that’s for sure. Doesn’t make it to Hollywood.

Up next is Haley Scarnato sings a Bonnie Raitt song, “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. She’s nailing this song. Nailing the look, easy on the eyes as they say. I believe she’s got this in the bag. We’ll see what the judges say, but I’d be surprised if she doesn’t get 3 yes votes. Randy says it was just “OK”. Simon agrees, thinks it’s a bit cabaret. They all say she needs to stand out some more and they’re giving her a 2nd chance to show up in Hollywood and do just that.

First up after the break is Jasmine Holland. Ooh, not too good. It’s amazing again to me that you can have someone like Jasmine who is very shy to begin with but can get up in front of the judges and sing like that. It amazes me though when these people who can’t sing feel like they’ve earned the right to be upset with how the judges act and them doing what judges do…..judge.

Baylie Brown from Krum, TX sings a Faith Hill song. She’s making it through, definitely a country singer, but mainly because of her personality and the brief bio they did of her. She’s going to to have a hard time setting herself apart from Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. I believe she’s going to really have to stretch herself past just country music.

A little drama session of contestants not being able to make it out the right door from the audition room. I’ll admit, this has been pretty funny to watch this season.

First contestant after the break is the Incredible Hulk, William Green. He and his cousin are auditioning with each other, separately. Randy can’t control himself after Williams breaks into “Amazing Grace” and is singing it badly, as well as like a very slow death march. Kind of like Barry White on quayludes. I like this guy though, as he was walking out he said he’s going to talk some trash as he walks out, just for the camera. Very funny!

His cousin was pretty good as a singer, but the personality is missing. His cousin has the personality, and he’s got the talent. I hope he makes it, and his cousin goes with him to teach him some stuff. He sings another song, and seals his fate heading to Hollywood. I believe his cousin knew he couldn’t sing and just went with him to be there with him to support him. I can’t wait to see more of these two guys.

More Ryan Seacrest after the break reminding us of the phrase “Remember the Alamo”, but that’s not what the judges want, they’re trying to forget some of the auditions. More demos of people who can’t sing.

Firstis Sandie Chavez, who has the distinction of singing for the Mayor of Houston. Not sure how that happened honestly unless he happened to be in the same karoake bar as Sandie during one of her performances. Her vocals have a little experience of listening to a female version of Bob Dylan. Simon made her cry by asking her if her performance was serious. Three “No’s”.

Up next is “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, but singing the Michael Buble version. It’s being sung by a girl that was beaten up for having a good voice in high school. She got her head knocked into the floor, had a concussion and blacked out. Ashlyn Carr is doing a good job, but she’s doing something weird with her mouth as she sings. Not sure how the judges are reading her performance. Randy is a little confused, and Paula illustrates to her how she needs to practice singing in the mirror. They’re showing Simon and he says they made a mistake, and they bring her back into the room. We’ll be back after the break.

We’re waiting to hear from Ashlyn Carr again because Simon feels they made a mistake. It’s interesting that Simon recommends she sing a Gladys Knight song or something like that that all the judges are very familiar with. Her second attempt gets her through to Hollywood, but with lots of recommendations from the judges to really work on some of her “bad habits” before she gets back in front of the judges for Hollywood.

Jacob Tutor is singing Kurt Cobain I believe. I’m not really sure, but it appears that he didn’t remember the words. Simon thinks he should be singing in a very bad mood in a dark bedroom. That of course drew some attack by Jacob with a flurry of letting the judges know they can kiss his….

Jimmy McNeal sings “Cupid” and pulls this arrow out and let’s it fly. Totally rockin’ this song, very old soul with this type of song. Three votes gets him through, we’ll be seeing him again in Hollywood.

That’s it for San Antonio with 22 contestants making it through to the West Coast. Tomorrow night we’ll be back with bits and pieces from all the audition locations that they couldn’t fit in the normal audition nights. Not sure if that’s the case, but just another way to get another night of auditions out.

We’ll see you again tomorrow, I’m forecasting lots more “bad” performances than good. I will say that Ryan has a tough job, he’s got to work with and manage some of these weird contestants at both ends of their emotional spectrums sometimes. Tough job, hopefully the cat-fighting between he and Simon will be a little more reduced this season than previous seasons.
