Why Idol Auditions Should Allow Instruments Part 1

Here is one glaring example of why American Idol should allow the use of instruments during auditions (Australian Idol and Canadian Idol allow it).

Carly Rae Jepsen, 21 from Mission, B.C. So unique, so fresh, so creative. Can’t believe that’s an original song. She’s great!!!

Canadian Idol Best Female Audition – Jessica Sheppard

Jessica Sheppard, 21, of Bowmanville, ON wowed the judges when she auditioned for Canadian Idol. She doesn’t mess up, by the way. The judges just wanted her to get to a certain point in the song.

It’s bad quality but you can hear her just fine!

Here’s an admittedly poor quality video of Sam Romijn’s audition for this season of Canadian Idol. Why is he so great??? Because he is sooooo Canadian! I think he’s immensely talented and unique. Just great!

Jordin Sparks Sings National Anthem at NBA Finals

American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, sang the National Anthem before Game One of the 2007 NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday night (Go Spurs!).

Nouvelle Star finale – Next Wednesday/mercredi Prochain!

I love when things turn out like they should. There were definitely many talented contestants on this season of Nouvelle Star but two have stood out – Tigane and Julien.

Tigane (far left) is so easy to like. He is smooth and picks songs you can groove to. This week he sang Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body” and Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” He is sexual and sensual and the judges love him!

Tigane, lui, ne déçoit pas. Il fait son truc habituel. Mister Groove sur Rock Your Body de Justin Timberlake, Mister Smooth sur Hello de Lionel Richie. Le jury adore, lui trouvant beaucoup de classe et une Â« sexualité solaire. Â». On doit être immunisé contre le charme suave de Tigane parce qu’on s’ennuie toujours autant quand il chante.

Julien, on the other hand, is a weirdo in the best sense of the word. An artist like him is hard to come by. This week he sang Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” and Dave’s “Vanina” and the judges felt that on that last song in particular, he failed to truly show is unique character. The fight is on and I am filled with suspense! Who will win??? I will cover the results live on Wednesday!

Julien cartonne sur Tainted Love de Soft Cell. Il en fait trop mais ça lui va bien. Et Marianne James a raison de dire qu’il Â« laisse la Starac loin derrière Â». En revanche, un peu plus tard, après une interprétation tiédasse de Vanina de Dave, c’est Manu Katché qui a raison lorsqu’il dit que Julien nous a habitué à mieux. On s’attendait à une performance vocale en voix de tête, ou bien à quelque chose de tout à fait différent, et on a eu un mélange, un entre-deux, sans goût ni caractère. Bref, on est déçus.

Le suspense est maintenant à son comble. Qui va remporter la cinquième saison de Nouvelle Star? Julien le décalé ou Tigane le gentil? Vous le saurez mercredi prochain.

Nouvelle Star – Gaetane Leaves/Gaëtane est éliminée

As I predicted, Gaetane, was sent home this week on France’s version of American Idol, “Nouvelle Star.” In fact, many viewers felt that it would come down to the two favorites, Tigane and Julien. For her final perfomances, Gaetane sang Noa’s “I Don’t Know” and Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.” Unfortunately, that last song did not go very well. The judge, Marianne James, told her she appeared more like “a little girl trying on her mother’s shoes.” Ouch!

L’affiche de la finale, on l’avait devinée depuis longtemps : Julien contre Tigane. Mais maintenant, c’est officiel – Gaëtane est éliminée. Elle est impressionnante d’assurance lorsqu’elle livre une interprétation très personnelle d’I Don’t Know de Noa, toute en justesse et en sobriété et très éloignée de la version originale. Malheureusement, dans un tout autre style, sur Man! I Feel Like a Woman de Shania Twain, Gaëtane paraît beaucoup moins à l’aise. Ses gestes un peu empruntés, sa voix parfois chevrotante évoquent à Marianne James « une petite fille qui veut mettre les chaussures de sa maman ».

Canadian Idol Auditions – Day 1

Part 1 of the Canadian Idol auditions were last night and I wanted to live-blog but we had the most massive storm here in Calgary and we lost power. So… there really were not a huge number of really, really good contestants but there were certainly a few that made me sit up and pay attention. One guy, Tyler Mullendore was so awesome that I couldn’t believe he wasn’t already a star. He just had it all, for me.

Darn weather storm! It stopped my PVR from recording everything so I am so sorry that this post is terribly incomplete.

Jordin Sparks On Cover of People Magazine…kind of

So, Lindsay Lohan, who recently was found passed out in her car and is in rehab again gets the cover of People magazine this week, while American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, gets a teeny tiny little corner. Is there no justice in the world? Well, before anyone starts feeling sorry for Jordin, I should remind you that, although she has appeared in magazines as a model in the past, she’s never been on the cover of one. Congrats Jordin! The article is good so if you haven’t picked up a copy, buy one – now!

Incidentally, I have absolutely nothing against LiLo or rehab (I’m happy that she’s getting help, actually), so please don’t go crazy on me!
