The American Idol Post Show Post - May 15, 2007

by Jeanne on May 15th, 2007

Tonight, Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks and Melinda Doolittle squared off for a spot in the finals. Each contestant sang three songs - one chosen by a judge, one chosen by the producers and one they chose themselves. How did they do?

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-01a-2007-05-15Simon Cowell picked “Wishing on a Star” as Jordin’s first song and it went well. In the beginning, she did have some pitch problems, in my opinion, but it turned out okay. Next, the producers picked “She Works Hard for the Money.” Again, this song was okay. My criticism, which really is not her fault, is that these two songs are a bit easy to sing. With such simple songs, I would have hoped to see more interpretation. She did not make them her own, but she did well. Her last song was “I Who Have Nothing.” Again, it went well. As Simon said, it was pretty old fashioned. In fact, not one of her songs was from the past decade. For someone as youthful and beautiful as she, I am surprised that she did not try to appeal more to the youth demographic but she is talented and maybe her fans like her just the way she is.

How Did Blake and Melinda Do?

Blake Lewis

Paula Abdul picked “Roxanne” as Blake’s first song and he did well. Simon said that it was a copycat performance but the problem with this song is that it is not in the major scale and there isn’t that much room to improvise. Still, it was not his best performance but it made sense. The producers picked “This Love” for Blake’s second song and it was really good. I thought it was contemporary and modern and he sang it well. The song he chose for himself was “When I Get You Alone.” I did not know this song very well before but I liked that he sounded his age. Will his creativity, uniqueness and sense of style be enough to push him through to the next round?

Melinda Doolittle

Randy Jackson picked “I Believe in You and Me.” Again, he felt the need to point out that he worked with the original artist, Whitney Houston (what a name dropper!). Like the other two, this first performance was okay. The problems, for me, came at the end of the song in the high notes. I do not believe Melinda would have picked this song for herself because she is so smart with knowing what she sings best, so I think she did the very best that she could. I have never before heard her make a single mistake, so the girl doesn’t even need to be criticized. The producers picked “Nutbush City Limits” as her second song and she was outstanding. Really. Just great. The last song was “I’m a Woman.” It was okay. I did not jump out of my seat but it was solid. I don’t particularly like this song and I had hoped Melinda might pick something a little younger, but I think that she could sing her way through basically anything, so it really doesn’t matter.

My Prediction for This Week:

Err, ummm, uhhh… I don’t know. I really don’t. Jordin has an amazing fanbase so I doubt they are going to let her down, even though I am not sure about tonight. The first two songs were simpler songs (not her fault) and the third one was, as Simon said, old fashioned. Blake’s rendition of Roxanne was not awe-inspiring but the other two songs were great. Some people hate his beatboxing, so who knows? Melinda is just a fantastic singer - plain and simple. But she comes off as a bit matronly and older (yes, I know she is older than Blake and Jordin but she really goes for the “adult contemporary” audience).

No prediction.

I felt all three did a good job last night. After everything this season has thrown at them in front and behind the scenes. Jordin seems to like the older songs and has an “old soul” so to speak but over all I think she did really good last night. And to be fair, just like how everyone was defending Sanjaya and saying he is only 17 to go easy on him, we should do the same for Jordin. She is only 17 and has an amazing voice. She definitely can sing circles around Sanjaya so if she has a slight pitch problem every now and then I think we can definitely deal with it…lol…it’s way better than listening to Sanjaya howl at the moon…lol…
Melinda, we can’t even really critisize too much b/c she is so amazing. Maybe we can say something about song choice but the girl can belt out a song.
Blake is a survivor! He is awesome and so talented I am surprised he wasn’t discovered before.

Hahahaha….Lisa, Melinda is the boom???? Hahaha…sorry that was funny to me….anyway, I’m not sure if you are reading this wrong but I don’t think anyone said anything bad about Melinda….and we ARE letting her do her “things” (that’s a new one) Melinda IS the BOMB, we have said that already…maybe I am just misreading what you attempted to write….so please explain what this means: give yourself a break and let her do her things Let’s her songs and feel good about herself she deserve it…
Who needs a break? We ARE letting her do her thing! And the rest of that statement is a blurrr so can you please explain or like I said before…we like Melinda…catch up girl :)
