The Post Show Post - May 1, 2007

by Jeanne on May 1st, 2007

Wow. It was a hot one tonight. I LOVE Bon Jovi and I was thrilled to see many of tonight’s contestants do a well with his wonderful songs. Some were not as good as others (two specifically) and, ironically, I think the titles of their songs say it all. First things first, here’s this week’s poll:

Who is Going Home (the bottom two leave this week)?

Now on to my reviews. Make sure to read my predictions at the end of the post.

phil-stacey-01-2007-05-01

Phil Stacey sang “Blaze of Glory” and I thought it was actually pretty good. This is probably the right song for him but the problem for me was the lack of change in the force of his singing. In the original, Bon Jovi brings his voice down a notch during the verses and it brings emotion to the song. Phil didn’t do that but I think he did well enough to stay another week.

jordin-sparks-01-2007-05-01

Jordin Sparks sang “Livin’ on a Prayer” and I think that sums it up. She needs a prayer to save her from her performance tonight. Before I get angry notes about her being “out of her element,” please read my reviews of Lakisha and Melinda. She was off-key for half of the song and if you know it’s not your thing, don’t sing one of the artist’s most beloved and recognizable songs. It was just wrong.

lakisha-jones-01-2007-05-01

Lakisha Jones knows how to work her plus-sized figure and I like it. She fell out of my good graces in recent weeks but she’s back. She sang “This Ain’t a Love Song” and she did a great job. She picked the right song and was so well-received that she got a kiss, on the lips, from Simon Cowell! I could not believe my eyes! That was hot!!!!

blake-lewis-01-2007-05-01

Blake Lewis may have dyed his hair but he brought back his old personality and style. He sang “Shot Through The Heart (You Give Love a Bad Name)” and managed to do a live re-mix on this song and I was stunned. Bon Jovi lovers may not like it, but you have to admire his courage and innovation. He beatboxed through half of the song and it was the most original, risky performance I have ever seen on Idol! Finally, someone had the guts to make this competition interesting again.

chris-richardson-01-2007-05-01

Chris Richardson sang “Dead or Alive” and that personifies his existence on the show. I don’t know if his career is dead or if it is still alive. In fact, I’m not sure what to say about his singing. He screamed his way through this song, I was annoyed and he had some real pitch problems. I did not like this and I don’t think this was the best he could do. There are other songs, like “Bed of Roses” that might have worked better.

melinda-doolittle-01-2007-05-01

Melinda Doolittle sang “Have a Nice Day” and I think that she rocked it!!! I think that this week was the least suited for Melinda’s voice and I think that she, not Chris or Jordin, did the very best that she could in a difficult situation. She brought humor to it and I loved her attitude during her performance.

This Week’s Breakdown:

Most Surprising: Blake’s gutsiness just floored me.

Most Improved: Lakisha - She is clawing her way out of the bottom.

Most Shocking: Jordin - I am not a fan but I was shocked that she willinging butchered that song.

Top Two: Blake and Melinda

Bottom Two: Chris and Jordin

Wild Cards: Phil and Lakisha - it could go either way

I agree! Blake rocked his song, I’m actually just waiting on American Idol to update their site so I can download and purchase it. I believe Chris and Jordin are going home tonight. Jordin was bottom last week and she didn’t do anything to help herself this week. She’s still got a career though. Not sure about Chris. Phil is totally coming back. He did a great job. LaKisha stepped up and delivered. Melinda was rock solid as always, she’s a machine. Input the music, regardless of style or comfort zone and she just sings it to be radio ready!

Seriously! I want to download it too! It was great. I have to agree with you, Phil is making a comeback! I am really happy for him. Lakisha too. Maybe the competition will finally begin after Chris and Jordin leave. Ugh.
