The Post-Show Post!!!

by Jeanne on April 10th, 2007

Well, wasn’t tonight full of surprises! Let’s look at a recap of this evening’s performances.

Melinda Doolittle

Okay, I need to voice my frustration here. Melinda is a fantastic singer. Tonight, she delivered a good performance of “Sway.” That’s right, I said good - not great. Aside from looking like Martin Short with her dance moves, I’m totally tired of her not picking challenging songs. If she is going to consistently pick easy, repetitive tunes, she needs to blow me away - she didn’t. She did look great in that black dress tonight, though.

Lakisha Jones

Lakisha is another strong singer who isn’t trying very hard. I loved when Jennifer Lopez told her that she doesn’t “have to do too much” Right - because J.Lo has never been known as the queen of excess. Moving on… If you had the Pointer Singers of “Neutron Dance” fame cover Gloria Estefan’s “Conga” you would get tonight’s performance. Lakisha really brushed off Paula’s constructive criticism which falls in line with her total dismissal of the advice from Tony Bennett, Gwen Stefani and Lulu. Keep ignoring the advice, Lakisha, and you might be sent packing.

Chris Richardson

It almost pains me to say that Chris was one of the better performers tonight, but he was. I love Rob Thomas and Santana’s “Smooth” and, although he did not quite get there, the second half of his performance was decent enough.

Haley Scarnato

haleyscarnato-02-2007-04-10

She sang, “Turn the Beat Around” but I wish she sang “Turn the Volume Down.” Okay, the backup vocals are so strong during the chorus of this song that it might be easy to ignore her terrible singing but when she started singing on her own, the truth was undeniable - it was a mess. For half of the song she was so out of breath that she couldn’t even complete her words properly. Does she really think that those short-shorts are going to get her a record deal? I think we learned our lesson with Jessica Simpson - shaking your booty is just not enough.

Phil Stacey

phil-stacey-01-2007-04-10

This was probably Phil’s worst performance. He sang, “Maria, Maria” and let’s hope it was in prayer because only a miracle could make people think he sang in tune. He was ahead of the music at least twice and it was so boring that I think it was actually worse than Haley’s performance. At least he wore a hat.

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-01-2007-04-10

Is no one else bothered by her yodeling? And her vibrato is so distracting that she sounds almost like a sheep. Am I the only one who feels this way? She’s got decent intonation, she can definitely carry a tune but something just annoys me. I thought the performance was boring and her twitchy behavior was odd. Her clothing was moderately better, though. I liked the top a lot.

Blake Lewis

blake-lewis-01-2007-04-10

I think Blake came out on top tonight, which, considering how everyone else did, is not a major accomplishment. He sang, “I Need to Know” by Marc Anthony, who, despite looking a bit like Skeletor from the He-Man cartoon of the 80s, can sing his butt off. Marc’s version is stylish and Blake’s was very straight. However, it was a smart song choice since it suited his voice and, in the end, he managed to pull it off.

Sanjaya Malakar

I can say, for the first time in the 12 top performances, that I did not think that Sanjaya was the worst. In fact, I think he did reasonably well. The song choice (Besame Mucho) was great, singing in Spanish won him some points and as Randy said, he’s “one of the smartest contestants” ever. I don’t know how he does it, but I don’t think he’s going home tomorrow.

Breakout performance - Chris Richardson. It was more than I expected.

Most Surprising - Sanjaya Malakar. He actually sounded okay.

Worst of the Night - Haley Scarnato. No further comment.

Biggest Risk - No one. It was very safe and boring.

Prediction for bottom three - Haley, Phil and Jordin with Jordin being safe.

Did anyone notice that yeah Sanjaya attempted to sing a spanish song in spanish but he got the words wrong! Yeah ask any hispanic person…he fooled you Sanjaya lovers once again…He can’t sing, forget’s his words, sing’s the wrong words, dresses like a rooster, and looks at the camera like he’s constipated but yet people still vote for him…America is going down hill if people Like Sanjaya are their Idols….Come on people wake up and VOTE FOR THE BEST! Not the WORST…WE got BUSH for that!!

Am I the only one that notices that all of the comments for Haley are usually NOT ABOUT HER SINGING! She is SO low key, and ALL of the comments that are posted above are EXACTLY what I yell out loud during her performance! She hogged the spots for the others that could of been at the top, like Stephanie ! I would be embarrased to be on a singing competition and only get comments about my clothes or legs! It’s not a beauty contest ! This show is really going down hill allowing the viewer’s to give the votes… Maybe they should do what the Dancing with the Stars do and allow the Judges to give 1/2 the vote! America is out of control with the different way of manipulating the votes…via computers, via talk show hosts edging their listener’s to vote for the worst. Why at this point, we have most of the worst! P.S. Haley get a clue! Sanjaya get a bigger clue! Don’t their families have any pride? Its’ crazy!

    A’Kyra,

It’s too bad that Sanjaya flubbed the words, especially with Jennifer Lopez being the guest this week. She corrected Chris, you would have thought she would have corrected Sanjaya, if what you are saying is true.

I can’t complain too much. We’ve got English-speaking contestants messing up the lyrics to English songs. Now THAT is embarrassing.

I don’t vote at all and if I did, I wouldn’t vote for Sanjaya (not that I think no one should, I just have my own favorite). I agree with you - one voting mistake is enough (at least Idol isn’t gonna send us to war, lol).

    Liz,

I feel your pain. I too cannot control the screaming that comes out of my mouth when Haley’s on stage. I’m yelling her name at the top of my lungs and my daughter Hayley is like, “what?” I guess what frustrates me the most is that Sanjaya is taking all the heat while she flounces around in outfits that, if I saw her at the mall, would tell me children to look away from. If they are both terrible, they need to both be publicly barbequed. I do wonder if their families have the guts to tell them the truth - I would.

I think the guys totally outperformed the girls this week, and I mean all of them. Blake was the best by far, I’d put Phil next, then Sanjaya and then Chris. Regardless of whether Sanjaya got the words right, the audience probably didn’t know. I think his performance was probably the best of the competition for him. I think Phil had another quality performance as well.

    Jason,

I am inclined to agree with you - the boys destroyed the girls this week. Yikes. At the beginning of the competition, it was the other way around. I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on Phil, but I think you got the order of the rest of the guys absolutely right. I also agree that the audience probably didn’t know about the lyrics. It was Sanjaya’s best performance.

Thanks for stopping by. Don’t be a stranger!

I think everyone is pretty much given up and not trying their hardest because they know that Sanjaya’s sympathy votes are going to keep him in the game. The past few weeks have shown that it doesn’t matter how well the other contestants do, Sanjaya’s getting the votes, granted for the wrong reasons, but at this point I would lose momentum too. The guy sounds horrible but is still in the game b/c of it…weird but true…and we can thank our fellow Americans once again for voting for the wrong person…I bet if he ran they would vote him in the White House..Now that’s scary! LOL
