Idol Face Off - Chris Richardson vs. Greg Neufeld

by Jeanne on August 28th, 2007

Idol Stalker reader, Nick, gave me a great idea when he commented recently. Since so many songs are recycled on the Idol shows, I thought it might be fun to do a daily face off. Sometimes it will be from the same Idol franchise, other times it will compare two different ones. Today, it’s the latter. *If you’ve got a suggestion for the Face Off, leave it in the comment area or email me*

American Idol vs. Canadian Idol - On this season of American Idol, Chris Richardson sang Jason Mraz’s song, “Geek in the Pink.” This season on Canadian Idol, Greg Neufeld sang the same song. Which is better? Here are the two videos for comparison:

    I love this idea!

Although I think Chris Richardson’s version was pretty good, I like the tone of Greg’s voice way more. Plus I liked the way Greg sang the bridge better than Chris. But in my opinion this comparison is pretty subjective because they I think they were both good versions. I just happened to prefer Greg’s.

I liked them both equally, but for different reasons. I like Greg’s tone better. I like Greg’s dance move better. However, I prefer the way C Rich sings the bridge, and how he stretches some of the notes (ex : “original dum-dums”).

Ooooo, I got credit for something! This is so unlike college! Awesome!

Moving on, Greg Neufeld’s version is an easier listen. I enjoyed CR’s a lot, but it’s all over the place. Greg’s is a much smoother, confident performance.

For sure, Nick! No plagiarism here, lol. If I get good ideas, I make sure I don’t steal them :)

I agree - I like Greg’s performance better and his little dance moves are adorable. I liked Chris’ performance a lot too and, at the time, I thought it was incredible but then Greg came along…

I’m madly in love with Richie’s voice, always will be.
Both are good, but I appreciate the way C-Rich adds his own touch to the song, making his own.
Greg’s sings it similar to the original.
    Great song-kudos to both versions!

Both did a great job. I think Chris’ voice made it a little more tense to listen to(I don’t know if that made sense). But Greg’s was smooth and cool. Chris was a bit spastic.

    I think Greg did better.

i like Chris’s better. He made it different, and better, from the original. Greg was good but he kept it the same. Kinda boring.

Funny how we can all listen to the same thing and hear something completly different.

I have decided not to say anything negative about Gregs performance other than I like His Hotness Chris Have You Checked Out Those Freaking Guns Richardson’s version better.

He totally made this song his own. He sped up the tempo yet spit the lyrics so clearly, didn’t eat one syllable.

His voice sounds so “musical” to me, a wide variety of notes and tones.

The end, where he changes the lyrics to, couuuuuhm “With me allllllllllllllllllllll niiiiiiiiihiiiight yah yah.” Killer stuff, have listened to that line about five hundred thousand times

takin bets now on who breaks out
all my money is on HHCHYCOTFGR for his ability to transition from one genre to the next not to mention his songwriting abilities (looks and guns dont hurt either)

If you ever met him in person you would be a believer too.

venonaD, I love your dedication to HHCHYCOTFGR - best nickname EVER , BTW. :)

What you pointed out in C Rich’s performance in comparison to Greg’s is what I missed with Greg. While Greg’s vocals and tone are more appealing to my ears, Chris rendition of the song was what made it great, IMO. I honestly loved them both equally! :)

I did meet Chris in person, after having followed him on tour for over a month. And yeah, I m a believer! But I can’t deny Greg, I just love that boy and his gorgeous, smooth if a little gritty voice. :)

Out of curiosity, I just rewatched both videos listening to the original before each one. And I will grant you that Chris did change it up more than Greg did, so kudos to him for that. I guess for me it just comes down to the fact that I love the tone of Greg’s voice. Which goes back to what I said before about this one being so subjective because I think they both did a great job.

I don’t think it really comes down to which one of them will break out. I think they both will and I don’t think they’ll be competing against each other because their fan base is different. I guess time will tell.

I thought Chris Richardson’s was far more superior to Greg’s. While Greg’s voice is pleasant, he doesn’t change it up much at all. Chris hits so many notes and I absolutely love the way he speeds up the song, and yet you can still understand everything that’s coming out of his mouth. To quote Paula (can’t believe I’m really saying that) He made it his own. Tho I am jealous that Canadian Idol apparently lets them play their own instruments.

Well, I just finished watching and listening to both guys.

For me, Greg’s voice is pretty monotone and his performance was a lil’ lackluster. Though it was cool that he got to play guitar.

Chris’s had that spark and he really connected with the audience. I luv that quality Chris has in his voice. I agree with Randy Jackson, Chris’s version was hotter than the original!

Not being biased, but I still enjoyed Chris’ version more. Guess my type of performer’s someone who can just entertain me. And I liked how he put a little soul into it. But Greg’s pretty good, and I like how smooth his voice actually is.

I love this sort of comparison. I’m lucky in the sense that I’ve been following both Chris and Greg on AI and CI. So I “know” both of them, know what they are more or less capable of.

Some who voted/gave opinions here have known one or the other performer, but not both, and I think that makes it harder to judge objectively. Fans start to vote according to who they like and who they know… And not on who was relaly better.

I am NOT saying that any of you here is wrong - we are all entitled to our opinions, and I totally respect that. Besides, we all have our own taste, our own preferences. BUT, I do think that sometimes, we just vote for our favorite, regardless of if he/she was the best or not.

    Just my two cents….
