Was Paula Abdul Drunk on American Idol Last Night?

by Jeanne on April 30th, 2008

imageAmerican Idol judge, Paula Abdul, seemed a little… um, er… disoriented last night and some people are saying that she was drunk or high on some sort of drugs.

I don’t really know and I try not to judge but she was a little confused and maybe it was just the change in the routine from the show last night or maybe it really was the result of a little substance use.  Watch for yourself and tell me what you think.

By the way, I’m in the process of a huge, nightmarish move so I might be a little less active on the site.  Just wanted to let you guys know!

she is fine. she was laughing about the mistake afterwards (just watch the interview on etonline). she is perfectly fine. it was just a mistake. it happens. at least idol is getting more attention than ever because of her mistake, im sure the producers are happy about that.

Paula just made a mistake. she is not a robot, she is just a human just like all of us. i wish everyone would leave her alone. The episode would have been sooo boring and not even worth talking about, if not for her. now, it made first page on all these differerent blogs that almost never talk about idol anymore. all thanks to Paula.

I thought it was funny when she thought he sang twice. Her mistake did make the show entertaining - Neil Diamond night - ugh who’s idea was that? LOL

I think Paula just was not used to the format of having to “quickly” give a few comments. She CANNOT be rushed for some reason. Remember when they only had a few minutes left a few weeks ago while she critiqued David Cook at the very end and she just couldn’t spit it out? She took so much time that Simon’s comments didn’t even air.

I get the impression that once someone says to her, “quickly, tell us what you think” she immediately starts blabbering and can’t spit it out. (I know that’s how I am! haha)

This season has got to be one of the weirdest ever for me. How can Simon say that Syesha is in trouble after he himself gave worst reviews overall to two other performers (Brook and Jason)? How can Syesha be in trouble if she sang her two songs better than the other two sang theirs? How can her performances be less “memorable” than Jason and Brook’s? I hope Syesha makes it to the top three. She deserves it.

And Paula is . . . Paula. I don’t assume she was drunk but even if it was just a normal mistake, it sure did make her look goofy.

Thanks for the website, this is great!

I think like alot of others have said, she is human and everyone makes mistakes. I guess it was just a little scarey for me because I hope she REALLY pays attention to the singers while they are singing to make sure they are all judged accordingly, because the comments the judges make, really affect the people and who they vote for.

  • A'kyra
    Apr 30, 2008 at 8:38 am

Poni - you are right. I too was baffled by what Simon said. Brooke and Jason did so much worse than Syesha. Syesha didn’t even do bad to tell the truth. This is all part of the AI way. They like the controversy and the fact that the voters for some reason vote the Simon way. If Syesha gets the boot tonight it will be b/c of Simon’s comment and not her talent which in turn makes it a poularity contest and not a talent show b/c there is no way Syesha should get the boot over Brooke or Jason. The Plus side is if she does get the boot, she has more flexibility to do what she wants and does not have to commit to AI and what they want her to sing, so it will kind of work out.
Either way Miami is behind her all the way!

  • Jeff
    Apr 30, 2008 at 8:44 am

Are you kidding me? She was CLEARLY drunk. It wasn’t just the stupidy of thinking that Jason had sang twice, pay attention to everthing she did. The way she spoke with a slur, the way she danced, EVERYTHING she did was indicative that she was intoxicated last night. Let’s face it, with Neil Diamond on in the evening who could blame her. Regardless, she should be disciplined for this, you show up to work drunk, make your employer look bad and then see how long you can keep your job. But wait, I forgot, it’s Hollywood, this will simply make her more “enduring” to most.

    Apr 30, 2008 at 9:02 am

Jessica - exactly! The people vote by the judges comments and whoever is the candidate for VFTW.
Jeff- your funny, but right if she was drunk that should be unacceptable.
I think Paula was reading her notes based on the Dress rehearsal…lol…doh!

Last nights show was a disaster. Beginning to end. I cant remember a season were it was so blatantly obvious which contestants they want to stay and which they want to leave. Regardless of their performances. I feel for this year’s contestants, they’re getting a bum deal. Something’s just weird.

  • Anne
    Apr 30, 2008 at 11:27 am

Paula was being Paula and this incident added humor to a very boring night. The entire season is boring to me. Not one performance this year is =/> the worst of any past season’s top 3 singers. Just haven’t seen the WOW factor yet. Have no clue as to why this season has been promoted time and time again to be the best. NOT. Of course, even the worst is better than I can do, but then I would never try to be on AI and to be judged by America. LOL!

  • Kim
    Apr 30, 2008 at 4:09 pm

It kinda makes your wonder though if it’s not rigged. Even if she did take notes from the day before, it would have NOTHING to do with last nights performance. I mean don’t get me wrong I’m a huge fan of Paula and I know she’s just human, but honestly people you could tell something was wrong w/ her she just didn’t seem herself.

Well, if you heard on the radio this morning with Ryan and Paula, you’d know for sure it wasn’t Paula and she wasn’t drunk. This was the executives pushing the show to keep moving so Idol wouldn’t run over and disrupt times with other programming. Everyone was rushed and it was a last minute thing, Ryan said he didn’t even know about it until the producer came up to him an told him what was happening, the judges were the last people to know. I was wondering, but Ryan and all three judges looked like they were just lost. I knew something was going on because it was just weird. You can tell when the show is running smoothly and when something suddenly has come up. I don’t know, I hope the judges and Ryan get an apology though, it wasn’t right for this to get sprung on them at the last minute, especially when they are doing a live show.
I’m so sick of people bashing Paula, this whole “she’s drunk” mess, is really getting old. She isn’t a alcoholic, she isn’t on drugs, leave her alone. I’m sure she’s happy that she can even move considering what she’s been through and deals with with her illness. If you don’t like Paula or Idol, that’s fine and your deal, just don’t keep throwing it other’s faces who are fans of the show and Paula, we don’t want to hear it.

    Apr 30, 2008 at 7:11 pm

This show is clearly rigged! Paula should not have notes written for a performance that has NOT happened yet! It’s clear they all are trying to get rid of Jason and this just proved it, drunk or not!

  • Chris
    Apr 30, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I thought she seemed drunk but my husband thinks she was confused. I called him upstairs to check her out and the way she was acting. I don’t remember one thing about the singing, just about Paula’s disrespect for her job and to the singers. Either way, she really is an embarrassment to the program and it’s professionalism.

Anyone who has worked with alcohol or drug dependent patients are really shaking their heads from such a stupid allegation. I guess if you have nothing smart to say… There was nothing in her speech to indicate anything of the sort. I think Jeanne is spending too much time on the computer and not enough time interacting with people in person to be that far off. And its that type of National Enquirer type of remark that is turning this blog into just another piece of trash. More likely Jeanne is the one who is drunk, she seems to make excuses for not finishing the blog each week (sick, vacation, moving). I guess those are all code words for passed out drunk, couldn’t finish it. And I guess that’s why I decided to leave a message this time, sort of a “see ya have a nice life, and upgrade my blog links…”

From the older generation…this grandmother loves American Idol and has been an avid fan for every season…but back to the original question. I saw the train wreck coming as Ryan was pushing…pushing…pushing for time. The whole show seemed rushed. Then…Idol wanta be’s…had to sind Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond was a heart throb in my high school days (kinda still is, HA) but you may have all noticed…his music is hard to sing. I feel Paula zoned out due to the lack of sparkle from most of the singers and really lost her place in the whole show. IT WAS SO SLOW AND SHE PROBABLY FELT THE SHOW WAS OVER INSTEAD OF MIDSTREAM!

There are people who believe in such rubbish, they buy The Star, and the people who sell it are marketing to the lowest denominator. I can’t believe there are actually a few (just a few) who are actually admitting they are that unintelligent and low of character. I know the difference between an alcoholic and drug user and someone who is just tired or overworked. How inexperienced with people can one be to think this was someone who was drunk? These people are the ones that end up making stupid jury decisions. I think they need to get off their computers and fat asses and don’t log on until their IQ’s move into the triple digits. If they did that, they could never log on.

This is to Rhonda. Who are you to get on here and call those who do think she was drunk or whatever they thought was wrong that they are unintelligent and low of character. Let me tell you that sure shows Character of you. I mean you don’t know these people they are just voicing their opinion they do have that freedom you know and even though it’s not what you think is right you don’t have to go calling them unintelligent, low character, that they make stupid jury decisions, and they need to get off their fat asses and get a higher IQ. It’s sad that you’ve posted this b/c there is soooo much I want to say to you on this but unlike you I have class and I respect your opinions but I do not respect you or how you have treated the other American Idol fans.

Ok! First off I never said anything about Paula if you read my previous message I said “I mean don’t get me wrong I’m a huge fan of Paula and I know she’s just human, but honestly people you could tell something was wrong w/ her she just didn’t seem herself.” I never said if it was drugs, if she was drunk or if she was exhausted” I NEVER SAID ANYTHING!!!!!! but you could tell something was different w/ her. Anyone w/ eyes could tell that. Ok if it’s not an opinion then what is it? I did not say crap about what you said about Paula I said that I respect your opinion. You need to go back and read what people right in the correct way and not jump to stuff.

To AmericanIdolFan, I’m one of the biggest fans out there. I have not missed 1 show since the very first one. I’ve been to 6 of the American idol concerts. I actually just went 2 weeks ago and saw Carrie Underwood, I saw Kelly Clarkson back in Jan. I’ve seen Clay Aiken 2 times I’m going to see Kellie Pickler in Sept. so I’m a huge fan.(not that any of that matters) but I am a fan and would never talk to the fans like rhonda has…..I just don’t like how people get on here and call other people names and say their stupid or whatever. It’s childish! And I give American Idol Fans a bad name? EXCUSE me did you go see how Rhonda called the American Idol fans fat asses w/ low IQ’s and unintelligent.. But yet I’m sticking up for them.

  • Rhonda
    Apr 30, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Ok, I don’t have a clue who has wrote that. Maybe your talking about your self b/c I have been happily married to my husband for 6 years w/ 2 beautiful kids who are 2 and 9 months. You can call me fat or whatever you want b/c I know the truth and that’s all that matters.

  • Jessica
    Apr 30, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I think that Rhonda and AmericanIdolFan are the spammers. I agree w/ Matt you two need to grow up. Your comments make you look like your 13 which can be expected from someone that age, but if your older then that’s just crazy.

  • Kim

    Apr 30, 2008 at 10:32 pm

    Kim,

If I was you, I would go about seeing if you could get the e-mail address of the person that was acting like you because they are putting a bad reflection on you and giving out false info about you. I work with a lady that this happen to her and she took the person to court because of the bad reputation and she won. This is just a little 411 for you.

  • Kim
    Apr 30, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Thanks for the 411 = ) but I think that’s just taking a little far. I mean people are entitled to their own opinion. I don’t appreciate the person acting like me and saying those things, but it doesn’t bother me b/c I know the truth. I don’t know how old the person is but you are able to tell that they are pretty immature to come up with that stuff I just hate the thoughts of my children growing up and having people like that teaching them. It’s scary. Anyways, I just wish that people had respect for others.

No worries Kim, the people that can actually read and comprehend your comment, know what you mean. We’ve had spammers before and we can definitely get the email address and report the person posing as you. But in reality you have some valid points in your comments.
Also, for the person who straight bashed Jeanne, that was so low and uncalled for. I know Jeanne and the mean things you said shows how ignorant you really are. She is far from what you assume. Let me guess you are one of those perfect beings that never had to move, never got sick and never have gone on vacation….( stalker or mentally challeneged?) Jeanne never said Paula was drunk or used drugs. If you actually read her comment she said she is not sure but has HEARD that she may have been under the influence and asked what everyone else thought. So now when others post their comments you twist it as Jeanne said it…lol….any guesses on an age group here…I say 5-10
Its truly a blessing that you will be upgrding your blog links….thanks for sharing and have a wonderful life.

As far as the show being rigged, has anyone ever gone to an audition? Or gone w/someone who was auditioning?

  • A'kyra
    May 1, 2008 at 11:47 am

I really don’t think anyone meant from the point of auditions that the show is rigged….do you know something?

  • chrystal
    May 1, 2008 at 11:50 am

as far as the Paula topic, my opinion is that she is not drunk or abusing drugs. However, if you’ve read the interview (in a reputable magazine) with Paula she talks about her medical condition and she does have to take some meds. I think that can possibly explain some of the “episodes” where she struggles with completing a sentence and what not. But people she is in severe chronic pain all of the time. From the way I understood it, I’m just amazed she’s brought a song out. Anyone who’s had back trouble or nerve injuries, neck injuries will tell you that you have your good days and your not so good days. It may not even be meds that causes her to be that way. My grandmother had her leg removed about 8 years ago. She cut her leg on a coffee table and it progressed into severe infection and eventually gang green was contracted at the medical facility she was in. Anyway, the entire leg from her heel to her knee was affected by it and the pain was so severe and she had so much fluid build up that she was completely out of her mind. Her thought process was uninhibited prior to the incident. She spent a lot of time in ICU and it took it’s toll. Before the surgery she would have some good days but mostly bad days and you could always tell the more painful days because she was completely incoherent. That’s my opinion on Paula. When she’s hurting and in pain she might not be the sharpest pencil, but she’s there toughing it out. She could be laying on her fat ass getting drunk somewhere as Rhonda so eloquently put it, but she’s not. She’s putting herself out there for everyone to ridicule. I agree with the dress rehearsal theory and she simply got confused on her own notes. Having a dress rehearsal doesn’t mean the show is rigged. Has anyone watched the movie Conspiracy Theory…come on guys don’t be so paranoid.

I went with my sister to Chicago for auditions a couple of years ago, and OMG is it an experience. Whatever city you are in has local DJ’s and area personalities set up to do the initial judging. You see SEVERAL people before you EVER see Simon, Paula, or Randy. SO yes I feel the initial part of the audition process is VERY rigged. They scout out the crowd and put wristbands on you before you are ever able to audition. They had several tables set up across Soldier Field and they would line big groups up at a time and let the person sing for maybe 5 - 10 seconds and then say next. Then depending on how many were good or bad in that long line, they would dismiss the entire line at a time. So you might be in a line w/a alot of bad singers or no one who really stood out and get dismissed because of that. My sister did not make it through the initial round, which was fine. She’s won the local idol competition here, she’s won several contests and she’s an awesome singer. There were other people around us that were better than she was and didn’t make it through. Wonder woman and the Statue of Liberty made it through to be on the TV auditions though…go figure. ha ha. They HAVE to be able to make it good TV. But BELIEVE those people have strategically been put through for that purpose and that purpose only and that’s not really fair to those who are good and can sing. We were 200% fans until that year she auditioned. We still watch but not as faithfully. I think back to how fanatic we were about the show and Rhonda seriously needs to calm down. There’s alot of people sitting on their asses whether they be fat or skinny and watching IDOL on Tuesday and they look forward to it all week. That doesn’t make them unintelligent. That was just mean to say.

  • Kim
    May 1, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I’ve never been to an audition but they did have auditions in the local area where I live and those who tried out said you had to go in front of producers before you even get to Simon, Paula, and Randy. So, you know that if you go infront of other people that they would have to notice how bad some of the people’s auditions are but I guess again thats one of the funniest parts of the show.

  • chrystal
    May 2, 2008 at 7:21 am
